Fragmentation? The iOS platform is still the same for all iOS devices. The alterations of hardware benefit that particular device, and in the case of the iPhone, Apple have made it taller to accommodate more visual information in, what is, a small hand-held space. The original iPad will remain a 4:3 aspect ratio because that benefits the user experience at that scale.

But what I don't understand is: will all apps have to be altered for this new resolution? Will there be two different apps in the store now? Will the apps have to be larger in file size to accommodate three different resolutions now? Those are my questions. Are we going to have to wait for months for app developers to update their apps for the new phone? I still have lots of apps that are not even updated for the retina display on the new iPad.

I'm all for 16:9, I can live with the 4:3. I'm wondering if I get the new iPhone are the old apps going to look just as good? Are they going to be stretched? Answer me that Picard!

The current thinking is:

Apps using correctly scaled UI containers (listviews, etc.) will adapt to the additional vertical resolution (so you'll see more emails, more songs titles, etc.)

Apps that are designed around a fixed resolution (mostly games), will have black bars (user selectable white?) that take up the additional 172 pixels (probably centered so 86px on each side or top/bottom).

However I'd image some major "fixed design" apps, may very well create an "iphone 5 version" to use the additional pixel space, or at least detect the additional space and use additional 1132x resources for things like background graphics, handle the extra resolution for the game area, etc.)

So we will have black bars just like we have to see when watching movies on the phone? Wow, that's going to make a lot of people happy, and more reason to worry about image burn in if you play a lot of games.

I still can't believe all this. I really do hope it is all bull.

Just make a freakn 4 or 5 inch screen with the same resolution of the 4s. It will still look awesome and no app confusion in the store, and still make a 3.5 screen for all of us who don't want something larger. Nintendo 3ds, now 3ds xl for the bigger kids :) Seems to work for Ninentdo to not F with their tried and true resolution numbers.

Yes... apps will have to be altered.

Portrait scrolling apps will require the least amount of effort to upgrade... just enough to allow for more height in the scrolling list.

But games and other full screen apps will have to be modified quite a bit... since backgrounds and other images will need to fit the new screen size.

Otherwise... the non-upgraded apps will run in a letterbox.

But the good thing is... developers react very fast. I expect to see thousands of apps fixed within a month... with the majority of apps completed shortly after.

I promise frank, this is the next iPhone. You have to understand that this will likely be the BIGGEST consumer product launch in history, so they have to make millions and millions of these. Along with the shrinking size of these types of devices, it's completely understandable that some of the 30-60 pieces of the multi-million production will leak. It's impossible to do otherwise unless they move back to the original iPhone strategy of announcing 6 months early, showing just a prototype off on stage, and THEN putting in the order for 22 million...

Sometimes the most sold is not the best one and people is getting aware of it. Thats why Android is growing.

Call me naive, narcissistic, egotistical or whatever, but...

people are psyching themselves out with each new leak.. they have such an isolated way of thinking, they don't possibly conceive that these are controlled leaks of past prototypes. Leaks to take speculators on a wild detour.

So they subconsciously allow themselves to accept that this is what the new phone will look and be like, just bc thats what's in front of them. You're taking the easy way out by not applying critical thinking here.

If I'm correct about the financial markets crashing around october this year, then I'm correct about this.

You must look at the past, and must look at the trends and ask yourself.. is this truly a final apple product design that meets what they have been innovating since the first ipod.

To me it's obviously a definite no. Why? well, well... do some serious thinking. All this speculation is good for apple even though it won't be the new iphone. It's revving everyone up and for what, a huge surprise. Tim Cook is a fantastic CEO and when he says he's crackin down on secrecy he means it. It's right there, but no you guys would rather believe in crazy leaks that just so happens to come out in a consistent manner each with new parts from different vendors rather than believing the CEO who is all knowing in this company.

I don't mind being wrong, it humbles me and helps me learn, but no. I am not wrong here, not on this one.

I really hope you are right. I've got my tin foil hat on!!!!!

When I was expecting a smaller iPhone, they are making a bigger one. Jesus Christ!

Anecdotal evidence from people that have switched from an iPhone to an Android phone suggests that at least for some a wider screen is important enough to switch.

Youve hit the bullseye & expressed it well.

Although I'm very happy with my Galaxy's 4.8" display, it would be extremely satisfying to have that size on an iPhone.

I'm first & foremost a very serious Apple enthusiast. Their stubborn refusal to bring the iPhone along into the competitive zone of full sized Smartphones circa 2012, is the most discouraging decision they've made in recent times.

If they genuinely feel, (they are acting like it) that many of their users fear change, or would rather remain with the tiny screen, why not make a second size like they do with MBA's and they'd have the best of both worlds. That, plus a ton of money from those like myself that have experienced the vast advantages of a larger display & have no interest in giving that up.

Sooner or later, Apples red hot demand will stop, why not prolong it, as long as possible. Common sense & one look at other equally competitive markets reveal that even the top dog, needs to match his competitor.

Apple is going to reward the people that saw this improper design and yet still didn't switch to samsung bc deep down they knew apple had something great lined up.

Think of it as an investment. Warren buffet gave shares of BH to his kids, and they all sold them and missed out on millions and millions. He knew it was there choice to sell or keep them and they chose to sell.

Here Tim cook stated the doubling down on secrecy, right there is a hint. another hint is the fact that apple is just awesome, plain and simple.. and you know what's not awesome, this design. Yet u fools think this is the final product. Ohhh how oblivious some of u are.

Do not ever doubt apple bc they are king. A whole new redesign set to surprise everyone and it is right around the corner. If you switch out to another phone, then u deserve to miss out on the fireworks.

I laughed everytime I see these rumors, because these hoax are mostly made in China...

So no more rumors on any Mac desktops???

Doesnt get the page hits so who cares.

And when the new iMac etc get announced it won't likely get a keynote. Come Sept they will do the new iPhone, maybe something about the iPods, some new iTunes stuff and perhaps a bump in the Apple TV box.

Then perhaps a 'and to go with our new offerings we have revamped our amazing Cinema Display line up. In addition to the 27 inch model we are releasing models new 36 and 46 inch. All three will feature a state of the art retina display with the same low glare glass we put in the retina MacBook pro. We've added hdmi inputs so you can use the Cinema Display with your computer, BluRay player, game consoles and our AppleTV. The new slimmer design will make it even easier to wall mount with the included adapter or you can use the standard desk stand. Exclusive camera technology will allow the high def FaceTime camera to auto focus no matter where you are sitting as well as subtly adjust images to insure everyone in the room sees a clear image when viewing videos. And the Cinema Display series utilizes image technology advanced enough to support 3d movies from companies such as Disney and Pixar (who will announce the same afternoon that they are releasing their whole library in the h.265 draft at full BluRay quality and 3d for those titles that have been converted exclusive on the iTunes store). The new Cinema Displays will be available at the end of October.'

And THAT will be the 'real tv' and everyone will be shocked that nothing leaked out to tell anyone that that is the true story.

And that afternoon, new Mac minis and iMacs will silently release including a top of the line Retina 27 inch Retina iMac similar to the Mac book pro with no optical drive etc.

I think the design is silly and I won't be getting one, so I'd like to believe what you're saying.

If you disregard the tallness of it next to the current phone, it doesn't really look bad. And having a larger screen is something that Apple does have to do with this update. Whether it's the 4" or something bigger, I think you can safely see the market is filled with beautiful large screens--Apple couldn't sit at 3.5. By going to 4" they keep the physical case size fairly similar to the current model, and they get to fit a larger battery.

The move to 16:9 is strange, but it is becoming the industry standard.

The dock connector is a weird move, but now we have parts for even the mini iPad.

Apple is one of the few companies that might be pull off leaking fakes. They are tight with security, there's a massive trial underway regarding the IP for the design of it...there's apparently a massive counterfeit operation in China as well. So, until the 12th we can't really know.

But, if this isn't the phone, surely we would have seen legitimate parts by now. Whatever the phone looks like, they need to make millions of them and then box them all up. So, where are the "real" iPhone 5 leaks if these aren't them?

I swear, some people in this thread are ridiculous. If a company like Mercedes released a new car, these people would be bitching that it still had round wheels and they didn't "change the form factor".

Do you expect the iPhone 5 to have a built-in space shuttle?
I swear i registered just to praise this comment...

Not a big deal at all...

The big problem with the graphic that UBREAKIFIX posted was that it wasn't shot "straight on" and really elongated the photo, giving the impression that the new iPhone will be drastically taller than previous iPhones. By using Photoshop's Perspective tool, I was able to bring the iPhone front back into true perspective. How was I sure? I placed a perfectly round image over the home button and worked the perspective until the sides were straight and the home button was round like it would be.

Then I brought the WIKIPEDIA photo of the iPhone 4S into Photoshop and sized it until it was the same width as is being reported.

Then I added 3 guide lines (Aqua color) at the bottom and top of the iPhone 4S so we can see how much taller the iPhone 5 should be. They I added a line at the bottom of the Home button of the supposed iPhone 5. We can see that we won't have quite as much room for the Home button. Also at the top, there's less room between the top of the screen and the top of the phone.

I'm actually surprised that Apple didn't leave the iPhone the exact same size and just fit a taller screen. But by making this slightly different, it revitalizes the 3rd Party gadget market for cases, bumpers and the like.

Ultimately, the consensus on the forum that the phone will be too tall based on that photo is just plain wrong.

And we all knew what the iPhone 4S was going to look like, and Steve didn't die until a day or two before release, so he should have been able to stop that...

but did we really know that becaus of a leak or because folks assumed since they kept the 3G design for two years they would do the same with this one.

And Steve had officially retired weeks before that and unofficially months before so was he really in a position to stop anything

SVP of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller hits the stage to talk about new iPhone... People have been wondering, how do you follow up a hit product like the iPhone 4S ? I'm really pleased to tell you today all about the brand new iPhone 4S L, it's the longest iPhone yet.

Or he says the way is that you don't. You don't change a winning design just to change it but you focus on the internal power. And presents a phone exactly like the 4 and 4s but with a better screen, better battery etc.

The leaks have made the phone look stranger than it really will be. You make a good point and I'm guessing your image is right on. But even then, it simply isn't as attractive a look to me.

Like you, I fail to understand why they didn't just fit it in the smaller case size. It almost has to be technical....it doesn't make look better.

So your telling me that apple planted every single leak we received that all point to this design, and that not one other part has surfaced from the actual design. Unlikely

not when your phone is on the opposite of the room and it has nothing to do with "fisher price" :p every bberry has it too, and isnt that a "business device" and yep even samsung which shall not be named on here got it

would be neat on the home button for example

So really you are complaining that Apple, which rarely to never kowtows to the 'everyone else is doing it' mantra isn't doing what everyone else has done

Diagonal stretch from 3.5" to 4" is not some huge change as measured in a purely vertical scale. The landscape screen will not be 0.5" wider.

Diagram a rectangle of that screen size in something like Pages at the new dimensions and print it. Cut it out and lay it on your existing iPhone. The difference is relatively minor- nothing like some people are imagining. The virtual keys on the keyboard might expand at a very minor scale and/or spacing between the keys might increase by a few pixels. Again, print out a scale mockup and lay it on your phone and any imagination of an unwieldy expansion will quickly dissipate.

This is wrong. The jump from 3.5" to 4" diagonal is done by increasing height only, i.e. changing the aspect ratio. The landscape screen will be MORE than 0.5" wider.

If I was to be offered job of Tim Cook, even tho I can improve his work greatly, not sure I would take the job. I would rather design and think instead of be just a guy on conference call talking politics. So I would likely refuse position even if they beg.
You might want to re-think taking Tim's job. It would fund the fleet of tractor trailers to haul your ego around.

No. We will all be disappointed on the 12th of September.
It's Apple tradition since it couldn't keep with innovation ;) to release an 'updated' (outdated because it never includes now the latest of the latest as it used to do) version of its current line of products.

iPhone 5 will be an updated iPhone 4S, that is, larger screen (it was about time to catch the competition with those 4"), more RAM, better processor (I guess that it was time as well to start thinking of a phone as a mobile gaming device...) and maybe (but this is a big maybe) NFC (obviously as long as Apple get its cut, which I doubt telecom operators will even allow, and Samsung is happy to provide a phone without draconian rules). Oh yes! I forgot, a better connection, that is LTE I guess.

Yet almost all of you every year buy the newest iPhone.. **** already..

If you are really OK with just incremental power increases you could just buy Android phone (like SG III) and be happy. Way more power than iPhone. Why wait for Apple? And iPhone 5 will not match Android phone specs anyways.

Switching to an Android wont make me happy if I hate the OS and I hate that I'm forced to buy a new phone to get the latest version of that ****** os

----------

Since Tim doubled security the amount of leaks is getting twice as more ridiculous. Hope they not gonna triple the security next year....

These leaks are just repeating the same thing over and over with claims of additional proof. Ie a couple of rumors from perhaps a single leak on a loop. Not a ridiculous number of leaks

Next someone will claim mr khan stole a prototype mini iPad and traded it at a local bar for a double order of shrimp ceviche

----------

The teardrop design was nothing more than a render/mockup based on what some were hoping to see, unlike actual part leaks such as shown in the OP.

Unlike parts some third party shop looking for press claims are real. Until the phone is released we can't say these parts are legit or not

Just make a freakn 4 or 5 inch screen with the same resolution of the 4s. It will still look awesome and no app confusion in the store, and still make a 3.5 screen for all of us who don't want something larger.
Do you seriously believe that (a) no additional information displayed will really help people and that (b) all touch targets being 15 or 40% larger is a great solution?

Not sure I get you here, The S3 has a radically different design to previous S series phones. The S, S Advance and S2 were all similar but the S3 is a totally new design so how can it be labelled tired?

What people are pointing out here is that Apple change very little with new iterations, something a lot of people actually prefer.

Yeah I forgot. Samsung took an S2, curved the edges a little bit and made the screen 0.3 inches bigger. Sorry 'bout that.
