An elongated iPhone? No way they will ever compromise the 4:3 proportions. I bet the new iPhone has minimal redesign in the case(eliminate the glass back) and much improved internals(A6, NFC chip).

Do you seriously believe that (a) no additional information displayed will really help people and that (b) all touch targets being 15 or 40% larger is a great solution?

So one line of extra icons and we now have black bars on apps is better?? If I wanted a bigger phone with more screen real-estate, I would not just want it taller. I would want it wider also, especially for web pages. But, I'm happy with the size now. If they don't screw around with the resolution I'll upgrade, if it's these stupid figures we are hearing, I'm a no go.

Yes, because your solution only helps people with poor eyesight, for the rest it would merely mean a bulkier device for zero benefit. Almost anything is better than something with zero benefits and noticeable downsides.

But the coming size comes at almost no downsides to you: 8 mm higher, black bars in some apps for some time.

This is wrong. The jump from 3.5" to 4" diagonal is done by increasing height only, i.e. changing the aspect ratio. The landscape screen will be MORE than 0.5" wider.

Not much more. I think it works out to .6 of an inch....I did the calculations back on like page 12-14 of this thread if you want to see sizes of various phones.

You mean 3:2 aspect ratio, the iPad is 4:3. As odd as it seems, they are apparently going to the industry standard 16:9 now. Maybe it saves on screen cost?

I still say it would be better to keep the 3.5 and have a 4 inch and even a 4.5 inch that are wider and taller. From what I can tell the varying sizes on the other phone OS's don't seem to affect apps and games all that much. I find that argument to a bunch of BS anyway. Apps and games scale. Proven since other's do it just fine on other platforms.

Whew. Thank god you caught this.

I don't see anything wrong with what you typed at all. Subjective grammar BS on the net; got to love it.

Yes, ur welcome. I try to help people understand logic. Is hard sometimes.

If I was to be offered job of Tim Cook, even tho I can improve his work greatly, not sure I would take the job. I would rather design and think instead of be just a guy on conference call talking politics. So I would likely refuse position even if they beg.

:apple:

You're on Mars buddy. ;)

I have to believe that this person is an incredible troll with sentiments like these and the name "chaosconan". The only thing the gives me hesitation is his join date and how dedicated this fool seems to be.

Meaningless response from someone that does not understand metaphors and similes, and simply tries to label anyone a troll because he couldn't provide any good response and someone who is stupid enough to use his real name instead of aliases a jason e. f. monk the newbie!

Steve would have never allowed this, and after Tim saying he was doubling down on security, i seriously don't think this will be the new iPhone at all, we will all be amazed on Sep 12th.

I think you forgot your sarcastic smiley.

All these leaks are either a big red herring or Apple new security measures royally suck.

Come on, you've been around long enough that these leaks should be nothing new to you. Also, I think a lot of people have made some assumptions on exactly what Tim was talking about when he said he was "doubling down on secrecy". When he said it, he specifically mentioned 2 things; leaks from within Apple and keeping companies they are purchasing under wraps. Regarding products, I think he was speaking more toward the phone lost in bars more than he was parts leaked from the supply chain.

Lol, I needed a good laugh today. :D

Apple is like the wife and Android is the young secretary at work and a lot of people are having trouble saying No.

That's right. You are seduced by the interesting and new look. So you are drawn away from the trusty, reliable and just plain performs phone. Like the secretary it's all fun and exciting for the short term then you get caught! Your caught red handed with your pants down and man what you thought was the best thing turns out to burn you. You've lost the best thing you've known, your trusty old friend. Remember looks may not be everything, simple is great!
So just like your phone your wife to may need or wish to be upgraded from time to time, splurge and pay a little for the upgraded version of your trusty friend. May be the best thing you've done in two years. #
Avoid at all costs the secretary it will burn you every time and can get expensive at that.

I swear, some people in this thread are ridiculous. If a company like Mercedes released a new car, these people would be bitching that it still had round wheels and they didn't "change the form factor".
Do you expect the iPhone 5 to have a built-in space shuttle?
No need for a space shuttle nor for a new design. Just give us a few things Andoid phones enjoy:

- Choice of two or three screen sizes
- Super AMOLED display
- Gorilla Glass II
- Removable battery
- microSD card
- LTE
- NFC
- Better multitasking
- 2GB RAM
- Resolution independent UI
- Wi-Fi Direct
- hi res front facing camera
- USB storage

Interesting. From the looks of it, it appears the white iPhone 5 is going to be all plastic and the black one is going to be metal.

Try it and see for yourself. Diagonal measurements have long been used because that measurement yields the biggest number for marketing purposes. A 65" HDTV screen is not 65" wide. A 36" HDTV screen is not 36" wide. What size HDTV screen do you think you have? Now go measure its landscape width. A 4" iPhone screen won't be 4" wide. It will be < 0.5" wider. If you have the current iPhone, it's touted as having a 3.5" screen; measure it's landscape width and be surprised. In fact if the new 4" one is indeed as rumored, it is believed that it will come in just shy of 3.5" wide (3.484" to be exact). To hit 4" wide in landscape, either the phone would have to be a LOT taller than all rumors have speculated OR the new phone would have to be widened too (as the "this is a red herring" crowd still believe).

Print the width & height measurements of the current and future (rumored) iPhone and see for yourself. Landscape will not be substantially wider on this rumored screen... just a little wider than landscape is now (especially, when considered against the on-screen keyboard). Don't be fooled by the marketing spin (the iPad is not actually "magical" either).

I can't liken Android to a hot young secretary though. The OS on looks is generic and plain, kind of teenage hacker looking. WebOS on the other hand....;)

Also I would like to see if things were reversed, as in the new iPhone was the Galaxy S3 and the S3 was the new iPhone. I guarantee it you would hear complaints on the color, or the bezel, the plastic look etc... and the other side would be considered industrial and hot. I dont know how Google did it, but they have all the internet love. I seriously think 8 out of 10 average have droid juice dripping from the chin.

People can't hit that like button on a google circle jerk fast enough, I bet mouses have been broken.

Another thing I see is ALL this stuff you can do with these super computer powerful Android phones. My arse, try rendering an HD video with lots of effects with those processors....yeah not going to happen. Multitasking what exactly? I have seen some poor examples people give on all this amazing stuff it can do. Apple is overrated, but so is Google.

Macrumors: where Android and Windows are the OS's with zero flaws, none at all, and OSX and iOS plain out suck. ;)

This is the downside.

I believe people have noticed some time ago, that iOS is nothing to write home about, is not going anywhere, and that the UI of the Apple phone is not that great, and certainly nothing new .

It also happens to be the worst thing for making calls , which is a bit annoying, in a phone .

really? in 5 years of using every single iphone i never noticed a problem in making calls.. hmmm

No, I didn't say that the only overall change in it is that it's taller, lol, I told her that with the design, the screen is only taller but not wider

Hrrrmmmm. How do you increase a diagonal measurement without increasing the screen in 2 dimensions?

I think you mean the overall width of the phone has not changed...

What a shame! They are letting all the other manufacturers catch them and pass them when they had the market covered! I think ego got in their heads. A half in bigger screen and 4g and a ugly back? Hell of an upgrade!

Yeah, no downsides... When the Apps are updated and You stop using it in landscape mode with the keyboard - good times ahead.

Yes dv8r, you are so deviating. We all look forward to months of black bars on our phones while slow people at app approval take months or years to approve millions of app updates so all apps can support iPhone Long. Then because they rush, another app that steals ur data gets approved.

Lol

Ever heard of the Pythagorean theorem?

An increase of either height or width will change the diagonal measurement. Plus we already know that the new display has the same width.
