I am using my iPad 2 AT&T sim in my VZ iPad 3 and it is working fine. But today I wanted to try the VZ LTE and paid for 1gig of data from the iPad.

The problem is I can not just switch sims, the iPad can not access data on VZ with the AT&T profile installed. Once I remove the AT&T profile I can access VZ data.

Anyone else have this? Any work around?

Well there's not a workaround - you need the APN settings installed for whichever carrier you are planning to use. The easiest thing to do is keep the shortcut on the home screen to unlockit.co.nz, and when you need VZW LTE, delete the custom profile. When you need AT&T, tap the shortcut on the home screen and install the AT&T one again.

Why is it I am using AT&T without a profile installed? I put the sim in and works right off. Stick Verizon in and it works too.

I agree. If you have an active ipad2 att sim, just put it in the VZW iPad 3 and it works. Take it out and put the Verizon sim back in and IT works. I don't even know how to change an APN. I hope I'll never have to.

I recently returned my AT&T ipad3 and got a Verizon and can confirm the following:

1. It is possible to initiate AT&T service online, not from the iPad, all that's needed is the ICCID (the sim card number printed on the sim) and the IMEI from an ipad1 or ipad2. If you use the IMEI from an ipad3 (a Verizon one) AT&T will not allow you to initiate service.

2. You cannot maintain your AT&T account from the settings section of the Verizon iPad, you must go to www.att.com/ipadlanding to make changes to the account.

3. There is no way to turn off the auto-renew feature from either the settings section or the online method. The only option you have online is to change the amount of data or cancel the plan. The cancel option online is not the same as the cancel auto-renew feature that is in the settings section. If you select cancel from online, your account is IMMEDIATELY cancelled and your data, as well as your account, are deleted. I know, because I did this. I thought I was canceling the auto-renew.

I had to call AT&T this morning and explain what happened. Surprisingly, I was only on hold for a few seconds, the person had me reestablish an account by putting in my ICCID and IMEI (the phantom one) and selecting the cheapest plan. Once I had done this, she reversed the charge for the $15 plan and gave me back the 3 GB plan that I had originally had. I had used about 1/2 a gig, but the plan had a full 3 gigs.

So, until and unless AT&T somehow prevents the use of an IMEI other than the one actually accessing the data, the Verizon iPad is the most versatile choice because you get the benefits of the more widespread Verizon LTE and the faster fallback AT&T 4G. And I can't see any reason why AT&T would limit this ability since they're not losing anything, like they are when someone uses an unlimited sim from their iPhone.

So let me ask this question I picked up an AT&T Sim card today free from the AT&T store. And of course I couldn't figure out a way to get it to work on my Verizon iPad 3. It shows att 4g on status with fullmsignal, So basically there's no way to activate it? If I stuck it in someones iPad 2 set up an account on that iPad 2 then put it in that my iPad 3 would that work? Or what if I got an IMEI number from an iPad 2? What do ya think?

If you have an IMEI nmber from an ipad2, go to www.att.com/ipadlanding. Select "get my pass". Enter the ICCID from your AT&T sim and the IMEI from the iPad 2. It will then allow you to set up an account. Once it's activated, put the sim in the VZW iPad and it may search for a couple minutes and then it will work. You'll have to maintain your account through that website, not thru the iPad. You cannot cancel auto renew from the website. If you select cancel, it will zap your remaining gigs and close your account completely. I have done all these thins so I know they wOrk.

BTW, I live in Havertown and the AT&T 4g is pretty decent.

Cool bro, thanks!. Yeah my 4s has been gettin close too 10mb in certain areas anyway. Be nice to have both options as far as my iPad. Oh so what happens if/when you cancel and it closes your account. Does it fry the sim like Verizon or can u re open account?

You can reopen the account.

Yep it does work. I was just going by what was said in the first few posts in this thread, and added the AT&T APN.

The secret there is to cancel at day 29 or 30 and let it cancel the account. With ATT it's not a problem. Then just simply create a new account using the same ATT sim the next time you need data. There is no problem if you remember to cancel before the next month is billed.

Remembering is the problem. Someone suggested removing the credit card info so the charge gets rejected. Not sure if you can save that though. Might be worth a try. It's all pretty ridiculous that the Verizon iPads are flagged to not be valid in AT&T's database. They really need to fix that.

Well, you have an iPad that has reminders, you may have Outlook which has reminders and there are probably umpteen other ways to remember including a string around your finger. It really isn't THAT difficult. ;)

They're probably not valid because they are Verizon iPads and not ATT. :) As stupid as it sounds it does make sense.

So, if you don't have an activated iPad 1 or 2 AT&T sim, nor the ICCID or IMEI number from the same, this won't work. Even if you do, you have to manage the service online and some options aren't available. You also ended up on the phone when you mistakenly cancelled your account, thinking your data service would continue like it would if you cancelled it on an AT&T iPad.

For this reason, I can't see the practice of using an AT&T sim in a Verizon iPad as catching on to the general public -- unless this process is somehow simplified. I doubt Verizon would be interested in making it easier to allow someone to activate a competitor's data on their model iPad.

Apparently there is a way to use AT&T without an ipad1 or 2 IMEI number by changing the APN setting on the ipad3. Your other observations are correct. It may not catch on, but I think it comes down to flexibility, leaving all options open.

The ultimate iPad would be a hybrid that would include the ability to easily obtain data from any carrier we wish right on the iPad with no complex workarounds. However, I wouldn't hold my breath -- for as we know carriers do not like to directly compete with each other but want people to lock into their service either with a contract or through hardware limitations.

A hybrid iPad would force carriers to lower their prices to compete much more quickly. We might not see unlimited plans return, but 5GB data plans for $20 would certainly be a possibility.

I just got a Verizon iPad 3 and I put my iPad 1 SIM into it. I got the ATT 4G and everything. However each time I try to use data I get the message you do not have any data left would you like to purchase more. If I put the SIM back into the iPad 1 the data works fine. I checked the usage and I have almost all of the 2GB left since I barely use data. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Now my ATT SIM is working in my Verizon iPad 3. For some reason last night it did not want to work. Strange. Curious after I sell my iPad 1 (with a blank ATT SIM) what are the chances my SIM will stop working if someone else activates data on the old iPad?
