After reading online it seems the "Postpaid" plan can be canceled at any time but you need to pay every month rather than use it only as needed. No contract, but no "pay only when needed" and no $15 250MB option.

What I'm curious about, and I'll probably explore it sometime, is this: If I add the ipad to my family plan as another line (AT&T) does the data plan get the 20% FAN service discount my other data plans get? Can I manage features online and turn off or change the dataplan and get prorated for the month, turning it back on sometime the next month? Lastly, what sort of surcharges and taxes am I going to incur on the line for the ipad that I'd avoid in prepaid?

I suspect I won't find out these things unless I just go ahead and get it set up as postpaid and try it out. Be interesting to see. Lots of stuff to weigh back and forth between the two options.

The iPad can't become a 2nd family line. I don't even think you can get it put on the same bill as your phone service. Someone somewhere here said if you take iPad POSTPAID plan they will appply your FAN only to the $50/mo iPad plan. No, on iPAD Postpaid you have to pay every month. You can cancel the plan but you would have to start over again from scratch. Prepaid plan you can buy just one month at a time when you need it.

I haven't seen the answer to this question, unless I missed it reading thru the thread. Can anyone describe what you must to do which back to Verizon, particularly so that LTE will still work? I'd hate to mess that up.
Just put your Verizon SIM back in.

@TB07-NJ: thanks, I'm quite familiar with the prepaid ipad plans. I know the prepaid part can't attach to an existing account. It's be the sixth line anyway, so that may be an issue in itself. And yes, it'd be sign up for postpaid if you weren't expecting to be reupping data pretty much every month.

It would be an interesting conversation to find out why existing $25 & $30/mo iPhone plans get FAN discount yet a $30 iPad postpaid plan wouldn't. Answer likely "just because"... :D

Anyway, this is mostly just an expression of curiousity and I expect I'll have to try it out for two or three months sometime to find out. "Take one for the team" so to speak. :)

I have also confirmed it, it was with my 4s w/ unlimited data. I don't have to change the apn back if i do actually want to use verizon at one point do i? Also i didn't want to try it but can i use the hot spot without my plan getting changed automatically?

I definitely paid for my AT&T iPad 2 bill with my other AT&T lines.

Do you have to delete the APN profile for AT&T that was created? I don't see how to unselect it. Just delete.
WHen I put in ATT sim I didn't change anything. When I put back VZW sim I didn't change anything either. However if you need to change your APN you can go here: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/ I believe there is also an app called APNCHANGER.

Interesting, someone else posted they weren't able to. Thanks.

So has anyone who has tried this (using an iPhone sim card) received any warning emails from AT&T? With the iPad 2 apparently AT&T would send warnings and even temporarily cut off data when they discovered that an iPhone sim was being used in an iPad. Thanks.

This was an entire different issue with people using their iPhone Sim (data plan) in an iPad.

AT&T is not going to care if you use an AT&T sim in a VZ ipad. The million dollar question is why do so many people want to use AT&T in a VZ iPad. Why not just buy an AT&*T ipad?

Well, it's different for everyone but for me it's pretty obvious. The Verizon iPad is generally better because it has better coverage, free tethering and has a better minimum LTE plan ($20 for 1 gig beats $15 for 250 megs IMO). I have an AT&T iPhone through my work with unlimited data. So, I'd like to use my iPhone sim whenever I want to get data and don't need ridiculously fast speeds. Save the $20 for when I do need fast speeds.

Btw, why wild AT&T *not* care about this? Pretty sure they don't want unlimited iPhone users popping the sim into a tablet. This is why they sent warnings to iPad2 users who did this.

They will care if you use an iPhone SIM in an iPad because it is against the terms of service for using a SIM in a different type of device than which is was intended. It has nothing to do whether it is an ATT or VZW iPad but it has to do with using it in a different type of device. Just like when people put ATT "dumbphone" SIMs in their iPhone to use the $15 UNLIMITED DATA plan (or no data plan) that would be shortly followed by a nasty text and email from ATT to stop.

As to why we care about an ATT sim in a VZW iPad, it's very simple:

VZW has better LTE coverage than ATT but if the area you are in (vacation, business travel or whatever) has no VZW LTE coverage it drops down to very slow 3G (around 1MBps). If you have an ATT iPad SIM you will be able to get ATT HSPA+ coverage which is usually anywhere from 2+MBps to over 10MBps (I got around 6MBps on ATT when on my iPad2). This way you have the best of both worlds especially if you are traveling around the country to different areas where LTE coverages vary.

Why should it be different for the iPad 3?

For those of you trying to use a non-iPad based SIM in the iPad, your account will get flagged and AT&T reserves the right to cancel your service without prior notice (although they either text you or e-mail you if you have a registered e-mail on your account). If you are a repeat violator of your service contract, you will get shut down and you will forfeit your service as well as termination fee.

Again, as I have said before, why have an AT&T iPad SIM in a Verizon iPad? Yes, it can be a backup if the country goes into zombie apocalypse (sorry too much Dead Island on the brain) but overall, you'll sacrifice LTE speed and it's a pain to keep swapping SIM cards. You'll also be paying for 2 plans at one time which will double your costs. In any case, do what you want and if you don't care for consequences, then it's cool. :D

Is hotspot available in Verizon iPad using AT&T sim? I am guessing not.

As others have mentioned before, I think the majority of the users following this thread just want to max out their iPad's speed wherever they are by using the iPad on Verizon's LTE while also having the option to hop onto AT&T's faster 3G network (via the att prepaid iPad data plan) when traveling or visiting locations without Verizon's LTE coverage.

Ok I tried to do this except under Settings, General Settings, Network there is no APN to change. It only has Personal Hotspot, VPN and Wifi. Under Settings, Cellular Data it only has these options Cellular Data, Enable LTE, Data Roaming, View Account or SIM PIN.

Why should it be different for the iPad 3?

Wouldn't it be possible since our unlimited ATT data plans aren't unlimited anymore. The issue isn't as pressing as it was before when the bulk of the notices were being sent out?

I've been running my ATT iphone sim in my verizon ipad for almost 24hrs. And still have not been cut off or received any emails.

I have no idea. Your comment certainly sounds "logical" but you are still dealing with TOS that clearly prohibits moving sim cards to different devices that they aren't intended for without notification to ATT that you have REPLACED your device. I would imagine in their warped minds they would think "he should be paying for 2 separate data contracts, and since he is using data on 2 different types of devices we are losing money" but then again they NEVER bother anyone for switching SIMs between 2 different SMARTPHONES unless you are trying to put an "illegal" plan on the other device (like trying to use a cheap dumbphone data plan on a smartphone). They may never bother you but this is AT&T we are dealing with. Worse case they will warn you and tell you to stop.

Can AT&T even detect when non-AT&T devices are tablets? that's one difference between doing this on the ipad2 versus the ipad3. Anyway I wasn't asking "why", I was asking if anyone has been warned after 3 days of this. Doesn't sound like anyone has.

The IMEI of a device encodes the type/model/manufacturer the device. When the phone or tablet registers to the network it sends its IMEI.

Is AT&T set up to send out warnings when a Verizon iPad registers to the network using an iPhone SIM? Probably not yet. Will they be? If I could tell the future I'd not be hanging 'round here. :D

The IMEI identifies the device or they wouldn't have been able to tell a smart phone from a dumb phone.. They certainly have the ABILITY to do it but whether they do or not we'll eventually find out. It's only been a few days however based on ATT's usual modus operandi I'd count on it. Putting an iPhone SIM in an iPad is definitely against their terms but whether they flag it is what we will eventually find out.

No one knows, it's all conjecture and assumption.

Thanks for the link! I guess the idiots at at&t are using the TACs to differentiate between the iPad3,2 and the iPad3,3.

It's a real shame that apple didn't just make a single device for the US market. Guess I'll probably be exchanging my vzw for an att… :(

I tried everything to get the AT&T sim to work that I got from a AT&T store but in the end gave up because I could not get it to activate and on my DataConnect page it wants to use the Laptop data prices which are insane and I cannot delete that account now.

So I had already bought a Sim cutter which came with some micro adapters which I tried to use to activate though my PS Vita which failed. I took the PS Vita sim and cut it and put it in the iPad and it work right off.

You would think AT&T would be all over it to get another subscriber but they make it difficult.

There is a good reason to put an AT&T sim in a Verizon iPad. And I'm not referring to an iPhone sim, I'm referring to an iPad sim. Where I live, AT&T has stupidly not rolled out LTE, even though Phila is like the fifth or sixth largest city in the country. By buying a Verizon iPad, I can enjoy Verizon LTE, which is widely available, but when it is not, I can revert to AT&T 4G which is quite a bit faster than Verizon's fall back service. True, an AT&T plan has to be initiated in order to do this, but it's nice to have the option. Of course if AT&T has rolled out LTE in my market, I'd stick with AT&T.
