Alright, so here's my situation and it's totally different from everyone else. If I have a dumbphone with an upgrade and a UDP line can I still keep.....

I'm kidding.

But seriously, does anyone know if the website warns you or somehow let's you know when you try to activate the iPhone 5 on the UDP line that you will lose unlimited data (if, in fact, you will lose it)?

If there's some kind of notice on the website that your plan is being switched, I'm all about trying the methods mentioned in this thread until we get the right one. Phoenix's method is the one I'm going to try first.

This rep didn't agree:

Please hold for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order. Thank you for your patience.
You are now chatting with 'Brittany'
Brittany: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
You: hi i have some question about upgrading the lines on my account
Brittany: Cool! I will be more than happy to help you get upgraded.
You: question one: if i order iPhone 5 on line 1 and 5 (which are non smartphone right now) then once i get the iphones can i change those iphone to other two lines (which has unlimited data rightnow)?
Brittany: Unfortunately, no. When you upgrade a line with unlimited data, you have to change that option. Even though you are upgrading different lines, when you activate it on the line with unlimited data, it is like you upgraded that line and switched the upgrade dates.
You: What if I upgrade it with the 2 gb option? Then when the phones come, switch them to the unlimited lines and cancel the 2gb plan on the other lines?
Brittany: The only way to keep unlimited data is to purchase a phone at full retail price.
You: So lets take this step by step.
You: What happens if I upgrade the non smart phone lines to the iPhone5 with 2gb data option?
You: I pay $199 each right?
Brittany: Yes.
Brittany: You pay $199 if you are upgrading to the Iphone 5-16GB.
You: Ok, so then I call soon after getting them and tell the agent to please switch the iPhone 5's to the current unlimited data plan.
You: You can't do that?
Brittany: Those lines will then have the 2GB options like you picked.
Brittany: I don't know if you received my last message. I do apologize for that. I stated that the only way to keep unlimited data is to get a phone at full retail price.
You: It was my understanding that because I didn't upgrade those lines (technically) I'd be able to keep unlimited data on those lines.
Brittany: No, I do apologize for this misinformation. The only way to keep unlimited data is to pay full retail price for a phone. I can check your data usage if you would like me to.

I disagree with this rep based on logic. What if I bought an iPhone 5 off a friend, or online from someone for 10x retail or what have you. They would make me upgrade my plan? Who is to say I didn't buy that phone at full retail from Apple? It's all the same. Once you get the phone, it doesn't matter how. If you haven't upgraded your line or changed the lines plan at all, then how the iPhone 5 got in your hands is irrelevant.

My family plan has
one smartphone w/ unlimited data(Mine)
one smartphone w/ 2GB Data(Wife)
and one basic feature phone which is upgrade eligible.

I wanna get iphone 5 using this upgrade transfer and keep the unlimited data and not sure which is best way?

I am thinking of transfer upgrade eligible to my wife's line, activate the iphone5 onto this line, then she goes back to her existing iphone 4s and switch my phone with a new iphone 5.

Any recommendations?

As long as you do not try to use/transfer the upgrade for the ULD line, then yes you can use the upgrade any of the NON ULD lines.

By the way, do I have to get a new sim card when swapping new iphone5 to my unlimited data?
I did not get a clear answer in this thread...

So to get this straight, I have four lines; three have unl data and one is a dumbphone. My unl data line has an upgrade which I transferred to the dumbphone and got the i5. When I get the phone, even if I activate it on my dumbphone line and then transfer it, I will lose the unl on my line?

I assume you will need to activate iphone5 on dumbline first and you will need a new sim when transferring to unlimited data, no?

your unlimited for that line is gone unless you refuse delivery and do not activate.

Well that sucks a monkeys butthole... The rep told me it would stay, I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens to others, although I didn't read that anyone else had the same situation...

Yep ^^^

SO, I made the mistake of transferring my dads line upgrade (dumb phone) and pre-ordering the iphone5 on my unlimited data line. WELL, I went to verizon.com and went to "activate a device", well when I chose my moms line (dumbphone too, but no upgrade available) it did the usual asking for the MEID number and stuff. THEN, I went to activate it on my dads dumb phone line (mind you, he originally had the upgrade) and it automatically asked me if I want to activate the 32GB Iphone5 that I pre-ordered!!!!!!! Then I clicked on my unlimited line and it was the same as my dad's line!!!!!!!!!! yayyyy. Meaning, once I get the iphone5 I will activate on my dad's dumb phone line, assume it'll make me add 2gb data package. THEN, I'll smoothly transfer that back over to my unlimited line :) :)

For me I already have a dumbphone line, so when the iPhone comes in I will look at the box open up the website, go to the dumb phone click change device type in the IMEI of the iphone 5, log out, log back in so that the dumbphone line now shows the iphone and the 2gb data plan, change the iphone back to the dumb phone and then change my UDP line to the iphone 5 log out, then turn on the iphone and activate it, and BAM it works no problem with unlimited Data.

Phoenix,

Would this work if adding lines to a family plan? Or will I have to activate the i5 on the new lines to "initiate" those lines of service?

Well your situation is different than mine. I transferred the upgrade from my unlimited data line to my dumbphone line and then bought the i5...

Good chance that you might lose your ULD. My understanding is transfer any upgrade from any ULD line will result in the system being tripped to show that the line has been upgraded. If you go from dumb phone to a line that has unlimited data you should be fine until Verizon says so.

What a crock of crap. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.

I've been reading through most of the pages, I just didn't see a question with my kind of situation (if there was one, I overlooked it). Judging by the OP, I would be fine but who knows. I think I'll activate it on the DP and see what happens after that.

I didn't even realize you could keep your uld, so about a week and a Half ago I switch to family share plan and killed my ULD because I didn't want to have to deal with it at the apple store when I bought my IPhone 5. Soon after I changed I read about this keeping ur ULD... Grr!

Oh well they are going to kill it soon enough anyways. Either that or they are going to open a whole new tier for data with their Share Everything plans. I chose the 6gig option. I will just have to watch how much streaming of NFL Sunday ticket I do when I am not home and don't have access to wifi! Although tomorrow morning I will test what watching a 2 hour movie consumes while waiting in line at the apple store in MN. Gonna get there at 5am, should be plenty fine then to get one!

Your situation has been mentioned/extensively throughout this thread. It's definitely been covered. Once again, touch your subsidy on your Unlimited Plan and get a 4G phone... bye bye Unlimited Plan.

OK so I have to activate my iPhone 5 on the dumbphone line first, then transfer it to my line to keep my unlimited data.

With regard to the nano sim, I don't want to have to go to the verizon store to get a new one, and it could take a long time to get through to customer support and find out if the rep I get can even do this "alternate upgrade" that someone mentioned.

Would the phone activate if I just took out the nano sim before activating it on the dumbphone line and then put it in and switched it on my line?

Nano Sim & Activation Issues

I just came from a Verizon corporate store and talked to 2 (seemingly) knowledgeable tech support guys. I was trying to get nano sims issued for my 2 ULD lines. They said:

- As a company-wide policy, Verizon stores cannot issue sim cards unless you are buying a phone. They claimed this has been the policy since the rollout of 4G.

-They claimed the sims that ship with the iPhone 5's will already be locked onto that number to prevent fraud.

-They directed me to phone customer service to get sim cards sent out. The tech support guy in customer service was unable to order sims for me because a) the phone isnt out and b) stock issues.

- The Verizon reps in the store said that there would be a high probability of losing ULD if the iPhone 5 is not activated on a dummy line first.

Take it for what its worth. Might be a pain to get the i5's activated on our ULD lines, especially tomorrow if sims have to be sent. I plan to try a different store, and it might be easier with a phone in hand and saying "I want to use this on a different line".

This thread has become such a headache to read through.

From what i have read, it boils down to this (again based on my reading).

If you want to keep the unlimited data (ULD) you can not use/or transfer the subsidy on the phone number associated with the ULD. Just forget it exist, put it out of your mind, ignore it.

You can however use a subsidy on any other number, order the iPH5, activate that new iPH5 on the NON ULD line. Then take the iPH5 plus a "dumb" phone to a Verizon store and have then transfer the iPH5 to the ULD phone number and activate the "dumb" phone on the non ULD line.

These seem to be the most often stated steps that should work.

this is the problem ive been trying to figure out. one rep told me i would have to go to a store to get another sim card because the one that came with it would be locked to that phone, then another one told me, no, they would be able to flash it over the phone and i wouldnt have to go into the store. sooo, idk, i guess well just find out tomorrow

"Touch" meaning activate on the line with the UDP. I preordered through Apple on my UDP (and selected the 2 GB/month option) but as far as I've seen/read I can cancel said preorder and keep the UDP on my line.

based on the enormous disparities in the info being provided by people in this forum, i don't think anyone can say anything for sure until tomorrow. don't count on anything.
