I still don't understand why the phone even needs to be activated on the dumbphone line, anyway. When the phone arrives, can't it just be activated on the line with the UDP? I don't believe the phone is shipped with information already tied to the dumbphone line, only activating it on that line will make it tied.

i think the more posts that come with this thread the more confusing everyone is getting

didnt someone say that the sim cards arent tied to the number

and i am going to ask this question as i know its been asked before but i think this tread has gotten to the point where there have been questions being asked and there are lots of conflicting answers.

if the sim card is tied to the phone number if you get the phone on a dummy account sign up for the data plan at the apple store but dont turn it on. when you get home either call or go online and put in the esn number into the line with the unlimited plan and put the dummy phone esn back on the line that you upgraded it should all work or did i complete mess this up.

i think if we need to make 1 post with the right info with all possibilities so this thread doest become a 100 page thread

I am just saying that historically with Verizon they tie a specific number to a card and you cant use that card again with a different number. Meaning that if i activate the nano sim in the iphone on number "x" I cant switch that phone to number "y" without getting a new sim card for "y".

It's something with activating it on the unlimited line first? I'm not sure and Verizon reps are clueless. I personally think you have to activate it on the dumb line first. However, I don't think you need to remove the SIM

From all of the Verizon reps I spoke with they said to activate it on the dumb phone first and wait 24 hours then switch the esn.

Lets say the sims are assigned. Do stores carry SIM cards?
Lastly. Has anyone realized we are calling flip phones "dumb" phones and if we were to go back 5 years ago these "dumb" phones were the thing to have. Just a point.

I am on a family plan. I have an upgrade available on my dumbphone. My mother has ULD on her iphone 4 and is willing to let me have her plan for a 2gb plan. Im buying iPhone 5 tomorrow.

How do i make this work?

So your mom who has the ULD plan is willing to give you her phone number, because that is the only way to do what you are asking.

You can use the upgrade on the dumb phone to get the iPH5, they will make you add a data plan to the dumb phone line. After that is done you can have them switch the iPH5 to your mom's number (that has the ULD).

I agree there has been several conflicting post, and most of them stem from that until some folks actually walk the iPH5 through making the move from non ULD to ULD line it will be academic.

What does seem to be almost universal is that you should not try to make any use of the upgrade for the line/phone number that has the ULD on it. Most post have been very consistent on this point.

What if Verizon said they won't have any for a few weeks. Meaning you have hold of the iP5 and the contract on the new is keeps going. Then they come out and say you can't do that. Man that would suck. I know I'm just putting fear into everyone. :D :D

That's exactly my fear... That's why it's better to wait :(

Are all pre ordered iPhones not activated when you order it online, telesales, or in the store? Anybody?

Try it and let us know how it turns out. :)

I went to my Verizon Brick and Mortar store 3 times in the past two days to confirm you do not need a new nano sim. They stated "For the first time ever" the sims are not attached to the phone number. I will give the three different reps I haggled the benefit of the doubt.

Here is the process they told me to grandfather your iPhone 5 into unlimited 4G.

1.) Purchase the phone at (a.)full retail price, or (b.)upgrade another phone line on your family plan at subsidiary price.
-If you chose (a.) proceed to step 3. If you chose (b.) proceed to step 2.
2.) Once the phone arrives activate the phone under the line you initially purchased it from (not the phone line with the data contract). This will meet the Terms of Contract for that line causing that line to be entered into a 2 year contract. Now deactivate that phone via internet, phone, or authorized retailer and place that number back onto the dumb phone. The iPhone at this point should not be associated with any number.
3.) Activate the iPhone under your line with the unlimited data plan. The nano sim is not perma-linked to any number (so the 3 verizon reps told me).
4.) Enjoy.

Hopefully this cleared up some questions.

Verizon store told me you do not need a new sim. They can do it electronically.

They told me the same thing via online chat.

VZW: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
ME: I currently have VZW service with two lines on a family share plan, not the everything share plan. One is a iPhone with unlimited data and the other is a basic flip phone. I was told by one of your assicates that I can upgrade the basic flip phone and use that device as a "swap" to retain the unlimited data that is on the iPhone. Is this correct?
VZW: Yes, you can upgrade the basic phone, and then activate that on the line that has unlimited.
ME: Now, this will extend the contract on the basic phone correct? Is device swapping even allowed with vzw? I don't want to do something that will violate my unlimited data to be removed.
VZW: That is correct, and yes it is perfectly fine. It's basically looked at as activating a device you already have on a line of your choice.
ME: Great. Now do I need to acquire a new sim card since I'm not purchasing it with the unlimited data line?
VZW: No, the sim card is built into the phone. They would just activate that phone on your line.
ME: Seems like the iPhone 5 has a removable sim. So even though its first activated on the basic phone, your saying the same exact sim can be used on the unlimited data line? If so will I just need to phone into vzw?
VZW: Yes, that is exactly what i am saying.
Matt: Great. Thank you very much. You have yourself a good day.
VZW: Thank you for visiting Verizon Wireless, I look forward to speaking with you again. Have a great evening!

So in conclusion if all goes to plan we r a go for tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone. And I just want to say how sad this is that we r jumping through all of these hoops to keep our uld plan :)

Agreed but right now it's worth gold till they take it away or throttle us.

Will the phone still activate without a SIM card if I take it out to activate it on the dumbphone line? Seems like this would make sense - I know that a few reps told you that the nano sim card isn't tied to the phone number, but a few reps told me that it was earlier this week. I'd rather avoid the confusion altogether.

Then I could just reactivate the dumbphone and activate the 5 on my UDP line with the SIM in. Thoughts?

The iPhone technical specialist I just spoke to told me that I will not need a new SIM card. I'm not positive he knew what he was talking about though - he sounded unsure.

I may just take the SIM card out to activate it on the dumbphone line and then wipe the phone and pop it back in to activate it on my line. I don't know yet. Maybe people will already have pulled this off by the time mine gets off the truck tomorrow morning.

Fun fact: the Verizon Wireless hold message advertises the iPhone 5 with its 4" retina display and 5 megapixel iSight camera.

EDIT: Also, this wouldn't be the end of the world if the sim card didn't work after activation right? It'd just be without 4g until i got a new one.

Wow, sounds simple. Can someone follow these steps and confirm this works? If I can do all this online, I will order asap.
