Hands up who has tried to run a particular app on the MacBook and found the video performance to be sub standard? I've been using a Mac mini that has the same video, and the performance seems not half bad, admittedly not necessarily doing the stuff you folks do.

Hands up who's whining for the sake of whining, and who actually KNOWS the Macbook's video is no good because they've TRIED it?

Does that mean if i had bought my computer today, i would have gotten 10% off?

:(

That's system software release days, not the hardware systems.

And it's not 10% across the board now. The give scratch-off tickets or something with varying discounts. You have to be in a Apple store.

Don't know if they'll do Black Friday again.

Haha Doh, i just got off the phone with apple trying to put my order through, insisting that my online buddies told me im SUPPOSED to get 10% off haha.

The guy was super nice tho, we actually talked about medal of honor for 20 minutes  Hahaha....

well, for now Apple e-mailed me $40 bucks off my next purchase... so i might just do that tomorrow ! haha

if you do a google search for apple black friday, they'll show u the list of products that went on sale... imacs and iBooks were on sale, 10% off... and no edu discount allowed... it was said in one of the forums that its on par with the edu discount!!

on a side note... has anyone out there bought their MB, and do we know what kind of wireless they have in the machines?? pre draft N????

on a third note, when u buy a mac and a printer online they give you a 10$ discount... now are these types of specials online only?

*yawn*

lame update.

Entry level macbook sucks. And they still have that **** integrated video card.

Not everyone has AU $3000 to spend on a macbook pro. For $2000 AU i expect a dedicated video card.

Asus has a 1.83 ghz c2d with 1gb ram and a dvd burner and a X1700 for $2000 AU (Same as mid level macbook).

Consumers like to play games, despite what Apple says. Pretty crappy apple.
hey can you link me to that notebook you are referring to, i'd like to compare.

but i still think i'm gonna get the mid-level MB since i'm gonna be doing some cocoa development over the summer holidays.

No I don't and I apologize for that to all I may have offended with my directness.I did not know that was a rule. I'm not a prophesier. I make educated guesses based on historical facts and information gathered here and elsewhere around the web. These MacBooks will NOT be obsolete when Santa Rosa comes out. Santa Rosa will make almost no difference in performance. There will be a better graphics chipset from Intel then though.

1. You are a propheiser (sp).

2. You are accurate.

3. You assume, sometimes falsely, everyone wants to be as cheap as possible. For THAT audience your posts are particularly valuable.

4. But for the folks willing to buy BTO from Apple or just go into a store and get whatever they have, your comments coluld really use some qualified amplification.

5. BTW I too expect to have 8-way Macs sooner rather than later. Even if only by getting a Mac Pro and installing Cloverfields my damn self!

The newbies here not only have no idea what we are talking about, but have no way to use it!!

We rock.

sigh... I would have bought one today, but the developer hardware store has been down all day. My discounts expire today, so no hurry now. Guess I'll wait to see if they do Black Friday again.

Black Friday It's 10% Off All No Scratch Offs

On Black Friday it's across the board not scratch offs.

recent Macbook core duo owner but now core 2 owner

I wanted to chime in on this. I bought my Macbook at the Apple store on Saturday night. I found out Wednesday about the core 2. I took it back to the store and asked for the manager. It was no problem doing a return but I was subject to a 10% restocking fee and getting a new machine, or getting a $200 refund. I tried to dispute the restocking fee to no avail. Fortunately, the manager of this store said if I wanted to opt for Apple care, he'd wave the restocking fee. I agreed and it's all good. I left with a better machine and a 3 year guarantee. I had to pay about $35 out of pocket, but I can tell you first hand, this machine is faster, quieter and runs much cooler than my first Macbook.

Hope this is helpful. This is my first post.

Hey !

http://store.apple.com/133-622/WebObjects/australiastore.woa/wo/StoreReentry.wo?family=MacBook

It is an australian apple website.
when i was trying to calculate the price of upgraded MB. I found that the price is cheaper than the standard price.

Can anyone try this link whether you get the same or not
by selecting the low-end MB. then upgrade either ram to 1 Gz or HD to 80 Gb then the final price is cheaper.

its not, if you go to checkout, it adds the GST on top and is the correct price.

Its just the GST isnt shown when you add something on top

can you check it again?

I checked again.

when i choose low-end Mb the price is $1749
upgrade with 1 Gz of ram the total include GST price is 1716
or upgrade with 80 Gb the include GST price is 1666.1

I will go and check with appe store tomorrow

yeah, then click 'add to cart' button down the bottom and watch the price correct itself.

just a question: is apple still obsessed with gross margins? nevermind.

many people look at the features and spes and see that as what apple has been developing, but if you imagine, rearranging circuts, and redesigning the interior, and changing the logicboard isn't a one-button job that apple press, like automator.

i think the discoloration, the random shutdowns, and the heat will be significantlly reduced, and that's also very welcome too like the core 2 duo right?

A whopping +133MHz which will make ZERO difference in performance.

### Hi Multi...would you mind elaborating on this?...cuz the folks at anandtech, barefeats, etc, etc disagree with you... substantially so. For me, I wonder why Intel would bother creating something that would make "zero difference". Also, 133mhz is almost the ENTIRE (167) bandwidth of my PB G4!!!

How about if someone simply wants a 13" or 12" laptop, and they like the matte screen better??

Really, what's with all these mac fanboys defending Apple's decision to NOT give people a choice of screen on their compact laptop? It's not about professional vs. consumer, it's about having a choice of screen size and screen type, together.

As for the ludicrous "connect a top-quality monitor" comment, yeah, that works great outside my home. Which is why people buy a laptop. So you can use it outside the home. But thanks for the blind Apple advocacy.

Amen.

Bring on the matte MB's and the 13" MBP's!

cool update, I really wanted them to upgrade the built in graphics though. Either way, I will be purchasing one soon. :p

but I can tell you first hand, this machine is faster, quieter and runs much cooler than my first Macbook.
this is exactly what i wanted to hear!

to the person that showed the ASUS. wow that is a pretty nice notebook. but i guess in the end being able to use OS X was more important than a graphics card. and having graphics would prolly lead to me procrastinating more with games.

I keep reading posts by a lot of people on here ... saying oh Santa Rosa is coming out next year, C2D would be absolute by then ... i don't know where do you guys get your info from

C2D = Merom
C2D = Santa Rosa (the chip will have the same name as today just with few addtions)

Diff between Merom and Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa has frontside bus speed to 800MHz while Merom has frontside bus speed to 667MHz

Santa Rosa will incorporate Express 945GM and 945PM mobile chipsets witch will support Direct X 10.0

Santa Rosa will have new WLAN Chip that will include WiMAX and 802.11n

So to sum it all up ..... Santa Rosa Chips released next year will be called Core 2 Duo Chips like they are called today but will have few additions mentioned above.

So the question really is .. how many of us really care about most of those features or even understand how they work ... so i think MacBook will not see Santa Rosa till Late Q2 or Q3 .... because there is no need for Apple to go with Santa Rosa when MacBook is just a low end laptop line from apple and most people using it don't even know what frontside bus is yet alone what it will do for you.

A whopping +133MHz which will make ZERO difference in performance.

Hi Multimedia, you should really do some background reading on current processor architectures. First you go about telling people that 4MB Cache in the 2.0 model is making all the difference in the world for performance and than you dismiss the importance of the frontside bus (FSB) speed increase as nothing.

I think in reality the performance increase in the FSB outweights the larger cache size by far. The FSB is THE bottleneck in the Intel architecture. (Why is AMD able to have similar performance levels with radically smaller cache sizes? - They have the memory controller integrated in the processor doing away with an FSB altogheter)

In the the long run Intel will be forced to do something similar but right now Santa Rosa will release the true potential of Merom. Overall system performance is not increased by a very fast processor that is starving for data from RAM. So I see the current configuration as nothing but another stop gap...

800 MHz FSB Vs. 4MB L2 Cache

I just don't think the FSB is the bottleneck that others do. You might be right. It's completely speculative on my part and I apologize if I'm all wrong. My point was really more about that there is no real need to wait for Santa Rosa as it won't be much faster than this rev is.

Personally, I will either buy one of these new mobiles soon because I need one or I will wait for Santa Rosa so I can populate it with 4GB of RAM.
Citing Wikipedia here: In computers, the front side bus (FSB) or system bus is a term for the physical bi-directional data bus that carries all electronic signal information between the central processing unit (CPU) and other devices within the system such as random access memory (RAM), AGP video cards, PCI expansion cards, hard disks, the memory containing the system BIOS, etc.

You bet that it makes a difference if this thing runs 20% faster ;)
OK I was wrong. My bad. [Sarcasm]Now everybody STOP! Don't Buy A MacBook! Hold Everything! You can Wait Another Six Months for a 20% increase above the already blinding speed of today.[/Sarcasm] I know that's what you cynics have been begging me to write all evening.
