Crucial question:

Should I go for a MBP CD 2.0GHZ 512 MB RAM(which I can get new for $1,685) OR
New MacBook C2D 2.0 GHZ 80GB HDD, 1GB RAM, which is $1,299.

I have to buy from a third-party website because a company I work for is financing it for me, so those are my options. There's a $1,500 limit - and I can go over if I pay it right then, and I don't have $400 extra to get the C2D MBP.

I game a bit, so I just want some opinions. ;)
Coming from the windows camp. this is what I have to offer for advice. You have to ask yourself how much you game, and how you plan on spending your gaming time. The extra that you spend to get a gaming capable mbp might be better spent in a video card for a desktop pc or a console like the upcoming nintendo wii. I don't think you can reasonably expect that you'll be gaming much on a macbook. No matter what you do to upgrade RAM or HDD space on the macbook, its graphic solution really isn't enough to play the latest and greatest video games. However, if you have a $1500 budget, and you are using the notebook for purely "work" reasons, a 2.0GHz upgraded with RAM will be a great machine to do just about anything other than play games on and shouldn't cost you any out of pocket expenses.

new mp

so i went to the apple store and am now usin my new MB!!:D :D :D :D :D :D

i would post some pix, but it looks just like the old mbs... let me know if you would like me to post some!

Yeah, good call indeed. I have my desktop for any heavy duty work, and the laptop (hopefully buying soon!) for on the go.

It would be nice to get gaming into laptops right now, but u have to pony up the cash.

For example, my friend spend just over 2 grand on a laptop less than 1 year ago. Dual core, nice graphics solution and everything. He's already having trouble playing some of the newer games...

Oh, and 1 more benefit for you. Battery life:p . Macbook Pro, i assume, uses MORE battery because of the videocard + the new MB C2D chip uses LESS battery.

Hmm... tough choice :p

Personally, im going to go with the macbook C2D. I mean, ive seen how laptops game, and generally they dont last too long with the way current games are. My advice on a gaming laptop is go big or go home haha. Considering your budget (which is very close to mine, haha) just go with the macbook!

Do you want something bigger? or smaller? Once again, im going to want to throw this thing into my bag and go places... and the 13" size is ideal for me.

On top of all that, i think its necessary to get applecare. I was never a big fan of warranties, but lets just take a moment to remember all the fried logic boards the iBooks have had in the past :(

So $1299 + apple care + tax is your budget

I think you should get the macbook c2d because the mbp with that version is actually giong to be slower than the macbook c2d and if you want to really game you might want to get a pc laptop. and it also depends on the kind of game you want to be playing on your laptop if its battlefield or anything then your pretty stuck with a pc laptop or a mbp. and yes you need apple care because of apple care i now just got a g4 12inch replaced for a macbook c2d 2.0 ghz and pay the difference with my discount which was only an extra 150 dollar :) and my apple care get transfer looks at the benefits of that :) and if anything goes wrong again in the future with this and a new one goes out i might get that as a replacement ;) so its all worth it.

How did you swing that?

Your 12" powerbook just broke? Why didnt they just repair it like they usually do?

I had apple care on a g3 iBook.... and when i broke i asked if instead of wasting money on a new logic board (Again haha) can i just pay the difference to get a g4.... they said no such program exists!!

Good luck, and way to get apple to upgrade your investment.

It wasn't my fault their system broke so many times and even when i send it in for a fix they didn't fix it! Instead sending it back to me and making me drive an hour and half to get to the closest apple store for them to fix it i wasn't even looking for a replacement but they said they would do it so why not? don't tell me you wouldn't if they asked you too.

I've ordered the new MacBook, but on the estimated deliver day, i will not be able to stay at home for whole day.
How can i check the exact delivery time of the MacBook?

Well, yeah, while I obviously do feel for you as it seems as though you're going to be the earliest adopter who recieves their macbook the latest, my comment was my typical hidden subtle humour that us Canadians are typical of making. I know the stereotypes associated with those that live in either Cape Breton or Newfoundland, so I was kind of playing off of that. I'm from a small maritime town myself (pop 1600), so I'm really just making fun of myself.

Never been to Newfoundland myself, but have a lot of friends from there. Never met a Newfoundlander or Cape Breton'er that I didn't like. We're just friendly folk out here on the east coast ;) No real offense directed towards Newfoundland, especially St. John's. Looking forward myself to experiencing St. George Street. Most bars per square mile? C'mon, that should attract any decent person who knows what's good for them. So yeah, my comment was more directed as a subtle dig at those in Toronto and Montreal more than anything. So maybe we get our macbooks delivered a week later than those in Toronto, but its not like we're still wearing acid wash jeans and dying our hair platinum blonde (or are we?).

Haha, alright, no offense taken. Yeah, George Street is a great place!

Macbook order

Hi All,
I have just ordered the new macbook with an external 23" screen... and i was so excited... as i thought i could run it in dual display mode with great resolution... just like i can with my 1.67 PB G4... however i just read that you can only mirror it, and the lid has to be closed (i was thinking surely they dont want us to run it in clamshell mode coz the rev 1 macbooks got so hot... someone even toasted an egg on the battery case... see: http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2006/07/7000/ for those interested)

Does anyone know if i can:
1) run dual display and not mirror
2) what the resolution will be (and if its acceptable)

Get The 2GB Sticks From Apple Too For +$175

I agree. Not clear if you can do this from where you have to buy it, but if you can get the 2GB upgrade for $175 from Apple i.e. if they can special custom order it for you, that's a better price for two 1GB sticks than you will be able to find afterwards - currently $190 is cheapest price for a pair not from Apple.

MacBook Spans, Mirrors and Runs Closed All Three Your Choice 23" Apple/24" DELL Max

Where did you read that FALSE INFORMATION?
Nothing could be further from the truth.

Please remember to always read the MacBook specs on the Apple site before you believe such blantant mis-information.

"Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors"

"Supported resolutions: 1280 by 800 (native), 1152 by 720, 1024 by 768, 1024 by 640, 800 by 600, 800 by 500, 720 by 480, and 640 by 480 at 16:10 aspect ratio; 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio; 720 by 480 at 3:2 aspect ratio"

It supports up to 1920 x 1200 Apple 23" and DELL 24" Monitors. BTW you do understand the DELL 24" is only $719.10 right? Plus some of us here think it is much better than the Apple monitor for numerous reasons. You might want to look into it and cancel your Apple 23" order.

But at least the Windows Camp *has* 64-bits. And *has had*, for a couple of years.

It's so funny to see Apple fanbois crow about how much better the "sometime in the future" Apple support for 64-bit will be....

Meanwhile, every online shopper at Dell needs to check the "64-bit Windows" or "32-bit Windows" to get to the second page of the online ordering system. (Of course, the masochists have the option of "64-bit Linux" or "32-bit Linux" ;) )

Tiger is 64bit at the kernel level, which is a darn sight more useful than the waste of space XP 64 that nobody will touch with a 10ft pole.

Urgh. I cant decide which one I want. MB or MBP. I know the new MBP's run really cool, but I havent heard anything about the MB.

Just so you have an idea its between

MB 2Ghz White £826.03

MBP 2.16 £1,240.80

Both are stock items and with Edu pricing.

Theres around £400 difference, which isnt that much, but I dont know if I can justify it. I love the PB features, so going down to a MB looks tough.. same goes for the keyboard.

But the advantage of the MB is that it's smaller and a slightly longer battery life. End of the day, they're both equally powerful machines, so that isnt worth thinking about.

Help?

EDIT: I also prefer the matte screen, not the glossy

Hi,

first time poster so go easy

I'm in a similar boat. I can afford the top MB or the entry level MBP (just). I'm not a gamer but I do want to do a alot of video editting, initially using the iLife suite. Will the MB cope? Forget about screen size etc, are there any advantages to going for the MBP?

Thanks

Well if you're waiting on Microsoft's Timeline, then you better keep on waiting.

I don't think I understand your point.

I was just suggesting that history teaches us it'll probably be a while (at least a couple of years is my guess) before most mainstream software goes exclusively 64-bit. Heck, I don't consider the overlap period between PPC and x86 somftaware compatibility to be out of steam quite yet.

But the Universal Binary architecture already handles the possibility of three parallel binary versions -- 32-bit PPC, 64-bit PPC, and 32-bit x86. I see no reason why vendors won't add 64-bit AMD64 to that growing list as well...

My traditional hardware upgrade schedule has been approximately every 3 years. I don't expect that software incompatibility problems due to my MBP's Core Duo processor will force me to push it ahead in this situation. I don't even think I'm going to be forced to dump my G5 iMac anywhere within the next twelve months.

I'm in the fun position of there not being a laptop from Apple right now that has everything I want. There are several issues I can't get around. Cost isn't a particularly critical consideration.

Size is important, as my laptop goes everywhere with me. My current 12" PB is a perfect size. The 13" MB is almost too big, but it'd work. The 15" MBP is right out, size wise. I pay the bills with network engineering, and one of my hobbies is photography, the other music.

Reasons I'd like to upgrade:
Having the ability to run Parallels would be outstanding, as I could more easily test various things under FreeBSD without having a stack of servers on my desk. It'd also be nice to have master images I could clone and have a known-good base OS build at my fingertips at any time.

Being able to run Windows for the few things I occasionally need it for would be nice, but not critical.

Problem is that I want to run Aperture, and I hear that Aperture on a MB is quite slow. I'd almost be willing to deal with that, but I can't get a matte screen on the MB, and I'd strongly prefer a matte screen when working with photographs.

Come on, Apple. Give us a higher end option in a small form factor. I'd buy one today.

Cloning the OS between drives?

If I were buying a Macbook now, I would buy the stock 2GHz white one and upgrade the RAM to 2GB right from Apple. Then I would buy a 120 or 160GB hard drive from a good vendor along with an external USB2/FW enclosure to put the included hard drive in.

That's pretty much what Multimedia said too and seems like a good idea. But what about the OS? I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Windows guy and would have an idea about how to clone Windows from one drive to another (activiation issues notwithstanding) but what would one do with the Mac? Would it be an easy job simply to buy a stock model and switch out the drive to a third party drive, and having no OS issues?

Forgive me is this seems a daft question; I've never had a Mac before!
