Awaiting your first post on how you tackled Coreplayer.

Thanks for the link - so much gifted diehards for PowerPC.
Think about all the landfills full of valuable hardware that could still be lifted up to the current level of computing and communication by some money spent on brain power ...
But the 'Zeitgeist' is all about eye-candy and selling and advertising to sell more and that will eat up a most of the computing power that PPC do offer.
Fast machines do have their place and are very helpful for tasks which need much computing power and I've enjoyed my MBPi7 "eating" a big shelf full of journals (scanned and converted to searchable PDF with DEVONthink) - but most of the time most people are computerwise overpowered for casual tasks. - So it's really nice to see, how inbuilt ScreenSharing and FileSharing options of PPC- and Intel-Macs extend the the power of PowerPC even to very intensive tasks (even multiple users may to log into a powerful iMac/PowerMacs behind the screen to make use of its processing power).
"My kingdom for a horse...": for RemoteDesktop to WinServer2008 and above. To keep Dropbox running. To keep Cloud-functions working. To keep Mail working, even, if providers change their certificates etc...

The app just crashes when I try to play 480p mp4 files on my new (old) 466SE clamshell - I presume this is just to do with the old G3 being too slow? Music files play fine.

Those files are well out of range of G3 Macs (assuming they're h264 files - Youtube maybe?) on any software. If you need playback on your Clamshell, convert the files with MPEG Streamclip (or similar) to a file format from the iBook's era.

Thanks - I suspected so, but just wanted to make sure. I don't have any real need to play video files on the clamshell, I just wanted to see whether it could!

It's a fun proof of concept but with the right codecs works fine :)

Very nice iBook you got there! Is that OS9 running in the background? My new (as of yesterday) Graphite 466SE@576MB only has OSX 10.4.11 and am wondering whether I should put in OS9 there on dual boot just so I can see what it's like.

How's the speaker on yours? Mine is quite grainy and not very loud (again, I plan to plug it in to speakers so this is not an issue, but I am just playing around with it!) - I presume this has to do with degradation over time?

I'd definitely recommend having OS9 as an option - needing lower resources, it's faster but at the sacrifice of compatibility but it's great to get a feel of the era these machines were born in.
Mine's the entry level iBook, so older and underpowered compared to yours - the speaker does sound tinny but I think that's just the hardware limitation rather than degradation - even if it was brand new, I wouldn't torture a speaker that small with full volume :)

Thanks for that information. I encountered the same problem last night, when I tried to run CorePlayer on my Graphite-Clamshell. Now I do not need to spend any more effort to find a solution...

It's a Sony Clie TG-50 and runs Palm OS 5 - it's quite cool with it's Aluminium looks and light up keypad...nice companion to a Powerbook :)
Cool device! - I have also a few old PalmOS devices sitting in the drawer (TRGpro, m515, TX, Centro). They do perfectly fit a world beyond Cloud and constantly beeing connected.
A pity, there's no way to sync with iCal/Contacts. It's also difficult to set up any one-way OSX => Palm data export via any other database.
I did like to work with HanDBase and/or SmartListToGo and their synching option to Excel. HanDBase still has a Win&Mac Desktop-Companion as well as software for nearly all mobile platforms.
Compared to the PalmOS devices my TreoPro with WinMo does really look great (best Smartphone design Palm ever made...) but since Windows left WinMo 6.x unsupported it's of nearly no use today (exept from been a multipurpose USB-WLAN-3G device with the "Morose WMWifiRouter App" (it's free now ... http://www.wmwifirouter.com/ - really worth to download and get an old WinMo6.x device only for the WMWifiRouter-function)

I can't bring myself to ditch the few Palm devices I still have - the Palm V was an amazing design...before everything mobile became a flat, oblong piece of glass and plastic ;)

Compared to other stuff, the storing space theese tiny thinks do require is close to nothing.
You may hide them in the G4 - there's enough spare place left...

i have searched for a review on youtube, but i just found two videos about this device! so different, very beautiful! i love things that make you distinguish from normal people who use the common things just because everybody use them... where i live people has only two kinds of phone, samsung galaxy or iphone... it is just so boring!!! very rare piece of technlogy your sony clie, just as our powerpc macs! :D

I'm really nosy and would like to know, which OS9 progs you've installed as your favorites...
I've spent a nice time at two weekends to explore OS9 to find out, what would fit my needs on OS9 and I was really surprised about the options (and I only spent a "few" minutes in the aisles of the amusement-section of MacintoshGarden - but managed to run my old C&C 1+2 CDs on VirtualPC3/Win95, which naturally caused my eldest son to laugh out loud about my "secret" intentions...)

A lot of what I choose you'll already have but i nearly always include iTunes 2.0.4, PlayerPro 5 (tracker module player/editor), Snes9x (Super Nintendo emulator), Connectix Virtual Game Station (Playstation emulator), Virtual PC 4 (with Win95 or 98), Photoshop 7 and Propellerhead's Rebirth (Software Synth DAW).

Ah, that really calms me down on my search for the "Red Ruby" or whatever.
Searching for stuff and solutions to make things work can be really addictive.
So your answer is my cure. Thanks ;)

Is there a special installation method? After shifting the coreplayer file to my applications folder mac mini 1.33 and clicking on it nothing happens

Not to my knowledge. I installed it as you did on my Macs and that worked fine. Maybe download it again? Perhaps something went wrong downloading, corrupting the file.

I wonder, could CorePlayer play 1080p videos on a quad G5, with decent speed?
I have used it on a Dell Axim with WM6.5.5, but not with any 1080p stufff.

Tests on my Macs have found:
Coreplayer can play 1080P on a Powerbook 1.67.
On a Quad, 1080P is no problem in all players - I've pushed VLC to play 4K video.
My G5 2.1 iMac, G5 2.3 DP all play 1080P fine.

Hey Dronecatcher - have you noticed that the audio level in CorePlayer is lower than VLC? When I use them on my PowerBook often I'm forced to use headphones or switch to VLC because because CorePlayer simply isn't loud enough.

Is there is a difference I haven't noticed it. However, on my Quad, VLC volume distorts if it's more than 50% - so maybe at default VLC is always loud.
