The slightly modified design is not a deal killer either way.

Does the 3G model have “actual” GPS? If so, I would assume that would be built into the 3G radio and therefore connected using the same antenna. The iPad spec page on Apple’s Web site lists “assisted GPS” as a feature of the Wi-fi + 3G model, but knowing Apple marketing that could just mean cell triangulation.

By the way, I like the aluminum enclosure. I hope they revert back to that for the iPhone 4G. The current polycarbonate plastic is just cheap looking.

Assisted GPS uses an actual GPS chip plus cell tower information

Not necessarily true. I want one but I'm not gonna rush in and get one immediately. This is Apple, and if history is to be trusted; early adopters will be severely punished by a second gen product with better features and a lower price.

That’s true with every consumer electronics device. Early adopters always pay a premium in more ways than one. At least we know with Apple’s revision history, it’s only going to get revved once a year.

That black plastic makes it even more uglier after the fat bezel.

Good thing the wifi only version doesn't have that.

Of course it's opinion, but I'd think you'd want to reserve opinions on looks until you actually see it in person.

For all we know, perhaps the bezel is perfectly sized so you can hold the iPad without being annoyed that your thumb once in a while brushes the actual screen. Any larger would be too much, any smaller would be too little.

I just have to keep reminding myself... I’m fine with WiFi-only on my laptop, and I already have an iPhone.

I must avoid 3G temptation.

I'm probably in...

The one thing I found myself asking when using my iPhone for anything other than a phone is "if I only had a bigger screen". The iPad is the answer. :)

Since the 3G is unlocked, anyone think another company like T-Mobile will step up and offer a better 3G pay-as-you-go plan? And if they offered voice in addition to data, would the iPad be capable of making calls (via iPhone-type headphones, most likely)?

Well, the iBook laptops (pre-MacBook) sure as hell did (and do) more than allow you to just read books.... I don't remember people being confused about what an iBook was back when that was the laptop line....

and what's with the "?!" ?

Yeah MacBooks and iBooks were called Books because they are a play on the word 'notebook' which is a general reference to all laptops. Also, notebooks close like a book, so it made more sense then. Now, it would be silly to call the iPad an iBook because there would be confusion between two Apple product lines, MacBooks and your proposed iBook. Also, reading books on the iPad is one if its major functions, but to call it the iBook, would be to limit its functionality somewhat. The iPad was envisioned as a universal surface device that is more versatile than any other Apple product.

I'm upset that when I buy the 2nd gen, I'll have to get the 3G model simply because my school doesn't have wifi in the dorms:mad:

That said, Ill probably love having connectivity in WAY more places than i do now via wifi.

The 3GS specs also list it as "Assisted GPS" so I think it's safe to assume it's real GPS.

Its still a mystery to me what this thing is really good for....in the way i can not already do it

It would be a great "slave" graphic tablet for photoshop,
OR as a tiny extra monitor for Logic Plugins or Final Cut pro,
OR it could be application aware and support programmable shortcuts and macros for any osX application.

Sadly, it wont do any of that.

Maybe they can make the Apple logo light up just like in the Macbooks, then we could have a flashlight too; or a possible flash for the camera in the next gen model.

Whatever!!!

I am getting it. I am ready to part with my MBP. I find the iPad perfect to replace my MBP because I mainly use it now for surfing the web and iWork if my wife is on the desktop.

I bet that prior to its release Apple will be beefing up this product taking notes from our initial gripes.

The only disappointment will be the camera. Though in the back of my mind I think the reason why they have not included a camera on this thing is because of the odd angle it will be on if its on your lap. They may have also left out the camera so as not to cannibalize iPod Touch sales. Come to think of it maybe they would introduce a way for the iPod camera to hook up with the iPad.

Way too much wishful thinking but what got me sold is iWork. :D

Really? I think developers can make virtually any interface let say a digital mixer, or a sequencer which you can send midi commands/serial commands via dock port. (And its "open")

For $499, this would be the cheapest alternative to Jazzmutant's Lemur which costs $2000

It will make watching movies, web surfing, and reading books while traveling a lot of fun!

I can't see that applying to movies myself. For reading, yes, as we are accustomed to holding books, but watching movies is a different thing entirely - will you really want to hold a screen in front of you for 2-3 hours at a time (assuming you don't travel with that awful looking 'stand')

I'm definitely an early adapter, and I've come to accept that. Technology is always changing and I've met some people that end up never buying anything because their always waiting for the next best thing, I don't, I enjoy them now.

Just two months after I bought my 13" MacBook, it became a MacBook Pro. Just two months after I bought my original iPhone, the price dropped by $200.

Something better is always around the corner.

my choice is a 32GB iPad (Wi-Fi) Model and I'm getting my Sister a 16GB (Wi-Fi) Model as an early birthday gift.

I personally quite like the apple case which would help alot, but don't forget that 3rd party accessories will FLOOD the market soon enough

I disagree with you. Therefore, you are wrong.

Sadly, you are correct.

Apple has a bad history of crippling the products they sell and ignoring the simple things the COULD DO ,to be fantastic ....in favor of .......What exactly ? playing it safe?

So irritating,

A company with so much potential and so many possibilities,....sitting on their hands.

I agree with this in general, though the price does seem reasonable.

I wonder what the chances are of a camera iPad in 2011.

Interesting. I didn't realise you couldn't buy just an iPad, and then choose at any time which connection you wanted. i.e. in the future, switch to a 3G data plan if you used it a lot... it seems you have to decide first.

I can't think why you'd get wifi only.

The Wi-Fi version of the iPad will be shipping in late March, while the 3G-enabled version will come until April.

That's an awfully long orgasm.

Surely you meant: "whilst the 3G-enabled version won't be coming until April".

I was thinking that Steve must have had a cow over adding that extra visual detail. Oh well, at least you know whether you're frying your 'nands with the transmitter or not.

nands? Do you mean; "'nads"?

I wish I was your sister =P But srsly, your post was well put. If you keep waiting, and waiting, and waiting, you'll never be happy. Usually when a product has great specs at an awesome price, it's because there's something better coming out and the company is trying to dump all the old.
