I still can't believe that there isn't a dock on the side, for landscape docking. It would make for a perfect picture frame whilst charging. I know you can do that in portrait, but lots of pictures are typically shot in landscape...

I can't see myself owning this AND an iPod Touch. When my 1G Touch dies, I'll have to make a choice - but it'll depend on what's available...

  • If this portends the next iPod Touch having a 3G option, I might very well just go with that
  • If the iPhone comes to T-Mobile, and they sell it like they do the Nexus One (so I'd just have to buy a data plan on top of my current low-minutes family phone plan), I will probably choose that
  • If neither ends up being the case, a 3G iPad will be very tempting

I don't use my cell phone a lot, so the current iPhone just doesn't make sense for me. I use my iPod Touch quite a lot.

It would be a great "slave" graphic tablet for photoshop,
OR as a tiny extra monitor for Logic Plugins or Final Cut pro,
OR it could be application aware and support programmable shortcuts and macros for any osX application.

Sadly, it wont do any of that.

No it won't be' anywhere near a tablet. Apple's multitouch devices Are not pressure sensitive, so they Are useless for professional/artistic purpose.

There Are still many users that still don't know that.

Apple's margin on the $500 iPad is probably a lot smaller than their usual margins. To make up for this, they are charging $100 and $200 for memory that costs a fraction of that (they do it on the iPhone and iPods too). They also are going to charge $130 for 3G+GPS. It's not a good deal, but I don't have a problem with it. It makes the $500 iPad a lot more attractive. Plus, I won't feel so bad when I ditch it for the 2nd gen.

If the chip used is a Gobi module, which sports both 3G and GPS, then $130 is not unreasonable, as that is about what the chip costs.

Buy or not!

I was thinking to buy the iPad after various rumors on it! Now I think for sure I will not!
Why? No front camera for chat, no multitasking, no phone, no removable HD card or slots for other cards....
In time until March to include at least, some of them?

It seems like the only people who will not get one of these are either Iphone haters or people who don't have the money for one. I am getting one. It will make watching movies, web surfing, and reading books while traveling a lot of fun!

Fail. I'm on my fourth iPhone (8GB, 16GB 1st gen, 16GB 3G, 32GB 3G S) and I could buy iPad no problem but I won't since its just one of these "jack of all trades master of none type of devices". Its not good for web browsing (no flash, limited video format support), its not a good ebook reader (lacks eInk type colour display so its heavy on the eyes and battery life is poor when compared with ebook readers), totally closed system (I think its OK with phones but not with computers), limited video format support in general (not your ideal video player), no iChat / video, no multitasking, non pressure sensitive screen etc. etc. I think its just objective consumers who don't like it.

Well, I guess that's how we'll be able to tell who spent the extra $$$$ on the 3G.....

Black plastic = higher iPad status

/They should have gone retro and called it the iBook.

I mean, they've got the frickin' iBookStore, so why not go with iBook?

lol Ah, the Apple elitist symbol.... that little black bar. :D

Sadly, you are correct.

Apple has a bad history of crippling the products they sell and ignoring the simple things the COULD DO ,to be fantastic ....in favor of .......What exactly ? playing it safe?

So irritating,

A company with so much potential and so many possibilities,....sitting on their hands.

100% trolling.. I've checked your posts, you are just here to stir.. stir.. stir. Grow up.

Surely this can be used for Logic and FCP?

Pionata, what makes you think developers aren't looking at the iPad for exactly this? All they'd have to do is develop using the SDK and use wifi - e.g. ITM Midi and other apps. I can't imagine what the folks behiind the Jazzmutant Lemur would be able to do with this..

I, for one, am excited by the possibilities of controlling synths, triggering samples, and vocal effects with one of these. It all depends if Apple allows this through the app store approvals process.

I'm hopeful they will. :)

I am getting it. I am ready to part with my MBP. I find the iPad perfect to replace my MBP because I mainly use it now for surfing the web and iWork if my wife is on the desktop.

Get ready for limited web experience. No flash and limited video format support to boot.

I'm definitely an early adapter, and I've come to accept that. Technology is always changing and I've met some people that end up never buying anything because their always waiting for the next best thing, I don't, I enjoy them now.

Just two months after I bought my 13" MacBook, it became a MacBook Pro. Just two months after I bought my original iPhone, the price dropped by $200.

Something better is always around the corner.
Most people with more sense than money would probably agree that waiting for Rev B (not C, D...) is sensible.

Go for the next iPod Touch. Can you imagine standing in line at the movie theatre with a 10" iPad. If you don't mind carrying a backpack, I guess. I think it'd be a pain in the butt to put this under my armpit and carry it everywhere.

Perhaps mad hopes... but

We have all seen what can be done with software updates, I think multitasking will come to the iPad at least with 4.0. Even other items such as remote desk top, further gestures ( I honestly believe they're keeping it simple so not to scare folk, then they can add more with releases) remember what the original iphone had day 1 compared to what it got in software (not just hardware updates!) I understand the tech, want the best, etc angle, but now adays its software that is the capability.. Yes I wanted a front facing cam, but I can live without... It would be a gimmick for a while only...

Remember it should have push (can anyone confirm) so you could theoretically have Beejive on push, and browsing web at same time, even facebook on push too whilst listening to music even if you so wish i can do that on my iPhone3G!

For those that are just putting it down all of the time, why are you reading this or saying anything? As my mum said if you have nothing nice to say don't say it!

For me, I had a MBP I only used for browsing, web, light xls and email, I have an iMac at home for power tasks. This will replace it. As another member on this discussion stated..

Using a laptop on the sofa is not natural, I want to just touch a screen where I want to go somewhere in a web page...

Now just the decision is it worth to have 3G as an option even I don't use it every month..... Grrr.... Wait till we see UK prices... And the fact that the wifi will be out sooner ;-)

Frankly, I'm hoping someone will give it that kind of functionality because that's definitely something that would make me want one.

Weird. I forgot about the non-removable battery. lol I guess I've been Apple brainwashed that I never gave it a 2nd thought (a user-replaceable battery).

Apple's iPad: New Device, Old Restrictions
http://www.pcworld.com/article/188108/apples_ipad_new_device_old_restrictions.html

Could you imagine what an access panel like an older MacBook bottom would be like? Not very pleasing. And to make the whole back slide off might make it slip it off when you hold it.

iPad non-FCC-approved:
http://i46.tinypic.com/28im7aw.jpg

I'm sure they'll get FCC approval, but they can't ship it until they do. So does that mean they're stamping the "FCC approved" mumbo-jumbo on the back and just waiting for approval to ship?

Well....is it? Laptop sits on your lap; the screen supports itself at a good angle. You can watch BBC iPlayer programmes without holding up the screen or using an extra accessory. You can type (a Pages document if you really want to) with two hands, not with your thumbs...I'm just not convinced that the iPad will be all that ergonomic for long periods of use. For shorter web browsing/emailing my iPhone seems OK to me.

instead of phone? no, accompanying any phone!

regarding battery life, I sense that the ipad might be a good sidekick to any phone, also to the iphone: as power-consuming tasks like video, photo, gaming etc. can be outsourced to the iPad, the battery of the phone can last longer than a blink of an eye, and be purely used for communicative issues.

that makes me think if I really need the 3G model (I already ordered..) and data plan, as I already have that for my phone. Hm.

well, 1.5 pounds is much better than 5 pounds of heat generating device on your lap. To tell you the truth many times I set on the sofa browsing the web on my iPhone less than 2 meters away from my MBP. I have a lap pad but it still annoying that you don't have control on the way you want to sit. The iPad is perfect for such situations.

By the way, the iPad will give developers access to shared folder so you can share files between apps and you can use it in disk mode like iPod. I find this interesting. Hopefully the iPhone will get the same feature.
