It seems like the only people who will not get one of these are either Iphone haters or people who don't have the money for one.

What a stupid statement, why do you think it's such a black & white decision?

I'm a big iPhone fan, could afford one if I wanted but I'm not getting an iPad because I don't need one. I don't think it's a bad product and think the iPad has got great potential, I just think my iPhone and MacBook Pro are able to adequately cover my current portable computing requirements.

Screen + Memory upgrades

I would have thought there was more than enough screen real estate for the radio gear to spray out front...if the radio antennae had circled the edge of the board, wouldn't that be enough?
A waste of form factor...

Hmm what's the gamble that the capacity goes up by the time it's released?
With some memory foundries now saying they can squeeze 64gb onto 32nm silicon..
Half a year is a long time in the component supply chain...

I personally quite like the apple case which would help alot, but don't forget that 3rd party accessories will FLOOD the market soon enough

my small little workshop is trying to get exact specs on these so I can draft up our new protective sleeves for them. we're manufacturing them in 100% full grain leather with a synthetic, non-abrasive lambswool liner....should initially be available in black and chocolate brown. we'll see how these turn out.

Might have something to do with physics being an obstacle....

Stupid physics.... what's it ever done for me!

The way I look at this is, if you are going to be buying the iPad then this black plastic bar will not (and should not) make a difference. If you think right now " A black bar at the back, OMG that's so ugly" (say in vogue, teenage girl style). As Steve would say:

Black bar makes it more exclusive. Don't like it? I don't care. You're not that big of a deal.

Sent from my (black plastic bar) iPad.

@Techie My eyes are burning! Burning!

Well pointed out.

It is DESIGNED to sit in the gap between phone and laptop.

If you have any 2 of the above - you don't really need the third.

I will get one because i have an iphone and an imac

The iPad will sit nicely between the two - as will I - on the sofa.

My not buy one straight away, but when its time to upgrade products - this will be when I change.

In 10 years - we will look back on this month as when something small but important changed in the way we live with tech, like how the history of the evolution of the mobile phone will have a dotted line at the iphone launch.

My young one looks at his 'old school' play telephone and knows what the handset is - but doesn't get why it is tied to a brick by a curly wire.

He will look at the home desktop computer and will wonder why some screens are still standing on breezeblocks

He will tell his kids that portable computers used to come with actual keyboards and weigh the same as a six-pack - and they laugh at him.

I love the future - especially when someone makes it a present. :D

No it won't be' anywhere near a tablet. Apple's multitouch devices Are not pressure sensitive, so they Are useless for professional/artistic purpose.

There Are still many users that still don't know that.

I think it's really stupid to say it is useless to artistic people. I guarantee artists will use it. I know I will.

Interesting. I didn't realise you couldn't buy just an iPad, and then choose at any time which connection you wanted. i.e. in the future, switch to a 3G data plan if you used it a lot... it seems you have to decide first.

I can't think why you'd get wifi only.

Well, there's a couple of problems with the 3G version.

It's unlocked, so in theory you can use any 3G data carrier BUT Apple for some reason chose to use 'micro GSM SIM' cards that NOBODY uses, so you can't just pop you SIM card out of your phone and stick it in the iPad. You can't just buy a readily available SIM in Las Vegas, Benidorm, Paris or Timbuktu and stick it in your iPad. You've got to go hunting for Micro SIMs.

I've got a Nokia which allows me to set up a wifi hotspot (like a MiFi) using my existing 3G plan anyway. The 3G version is redundant for me. The only annoying thing is you only get GPS with the 3G version.

According to the Apple page, yes, but they don't list where it is (only the Wi-Fi version is listed on the website):

http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

Thx. Looked there before but found it @ the 2nd view.

Input and output
  • Dock connector
  • 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack
  • Built-in speakers
  • Microphone
  • SIM card tray (Wi-Fi + 3G model only)

Examined all the product photos but couldn't find a trace of a tray, okay most of the photos are the Wi-Fi model.

At the top view you can see a tiny spot besides the headphone jack. What could that be?

Ha ha... Somehow that made me chuckle :)

weird, eh? ;)

Weird maybe, I just find that every thing is starting to look the same like the new Holden cars look like the new ford cars here in AU and the same with websites.

Me too. As a musician the possibilities for 10-touch virtual instruments is mind boggling

The lack of imagination displayed here is mindblowing!

I use the air mouse app as a rudimentary tablet
Looking forward to using the iPad in a similar way

And as for not being 'pressure sensitive' - there is always multi touch...
why not use 2 fingers and spread them for more 'pressure'?

Or on piano keys, the further up the key you press the softer it is?

Don't think of this thing as a library - think of it as a printing press.
The possibilties are very exciting!

Dude, it's got nothing to do with being an iPhone hater. I have an iPhone, Powerbook G4, and a 1st generation Mac Pro, but in it's current format there is no way I'm buying this thing.

I've got plenty of money that I was willing to part with for something better than this. I'm holding onto it now to replace my very old Powerbook with a new MBP when there an announcement with i5 or i7 chips.

Totally agree

Interestingly a few friends who were going to update their macbooks are moving to the iMac and iPad way of thinking too, previously they had the macbook so it could travel with them, but underused in travel and too big/bulky. This is a real big shift to quite a few people I believe.

I could afford one and I sure as hell don't want one. The money I had put aside for an iPad is going on the highest-end iPod Touch at the next update and more RAM+new HDD to make my Macbook a god amongst the iPads.

you can make music with a can and a stick and a painting with mud and rocks.
It depends on what levels of artistic technique you want to work. I'm a graphic designer, working on Ae, Ps, Maya, avid and fcp. Photoshop without stilus and pressure sensitive tablet is just a better "paint" application. After effect is unusable on a single display less than 1600x1050 (to' say the least! I work on a cinema display and i often run out of space. Processing power of the ipad is lame, RAM is too, screen is small for serious stuff.
Of course Someone will find "artistic" use of the gadget, just lime "ocarina" app on the phone.

My bet is that you'll find Standardized instrument for standardized art, that always looks and sound good, but isn't creative enough for my tastes.

But i guess in 5/10 years, when this technology will hit the pro market, we may find something truly creative. Right now the ipad is a toy.
