Agreed!

well, 1.5 pounds is much better than 5 pounds of heat generating device on your lap. To tell you the truth many times I set on the sofa browsing the web on my iPhone less than 2 meters away from my MBP. I have a lap pad but it still annoying that you don't have control on the way you want to sit. The iPad is perfect for such situations.

By the way, the iPad will give developers access to shared folder so you can share files between apps and you can use it in disk mode like iPod. I find this interesting. Hopefully the iPhone will get the same feature.

I must be odd as I never use my lap top on my lap lol, its always on the coffee table so I end up leaning over it. What I want is to be able to lay back and browse on something bigger than an iPhone, which I admit is great for quick looking but not reading Macrumors etc lol...

So the inbetween, lay back use, don't have to conform approach suits me fine...

It seems like the only people who will not get one of these are either Iphone haters or people who don't have the money for one. I am getting one. It will make watching movies, web surfing, and reading books while traveling a lot of fun!

I love the iPhone. I love my iMac. I'll love the MacBook Pro i buy soon. I love most things Apple makes. Hell, i even have an Apple logo tattoo.. but this thing just plain sucks. I won't be buying one. No way. Second gen.. we'll see. But this one has nowhere near enough features to make me want it. Add a camera, multi-tasking and Flash.. and i'd buy one in a heart beat. iChat wouldn't hurt, either. Even if it were wifi only to avoid crushing AT&T's ****** network more than it already is.

man, the amount of people complaining about this things is crazy, all i keep reading is it doesn't do this, it doesn't do that, there's no camera and oh my god no flash support!

and now, the big black strip issue? get over it already.

i think this is a great product, what better way to take some movies with you on a long haul flight and be able to sit there with your dinner tray in front of you and be able to keep watching, instead of having to fold away your laptop cos there's not enough room to keep it there while you eat. how about sitting in bed watching 24 on it, i know my iphone is fiddly to hold in bed for this and my MBP is just too big and clunky for me to be comfortable.

if you want all the extra things, flash support, multitasking, full blown OSX, camera and light weight, then buy a macbook air for god's sake. stop moaning!

Can we hear no more from people with laptops and iphones complaining that they won't be buying one?

IT IS NOT AIMED AT YOU!

Thanks.

That is the microphone, which for some reason is not in the speaker grills.

Probably the same reason your feet are at the other end of your body from your nose.....

Its just better that way.

I thought about that too, until I realized its too big to carry easily and too small for real long term viewing. Sorry, but it needs to be larger and have more ability to take the place of my laptop on trips.

the iphone is the right size because it doesn't try to take over duties of larger devices. It gives me access to mail, pictures, music, and such, in a scaled down size. when I need to do real work with those I pull out the laptop. The problem with this device is that it cannot do real work. Hence whats it point?

Whoop this out while at dinner and people will look at you like your a tard, but the phone works. Its a flipping toy.

iPad disappointment!

This is the bigest disappointment from Apple EVER! No Flash ?? No Camera ?? No Multi tasking??
I was hoping to replace my macbook with this divice but if you cat run any serious apps like
Photoshop, Logic then what worth is it? Its like having my iphone 3gs in a bigger scale!
This product was designed to be the best internet surfing experience you can get, right?
How is that possible when there is no flash suport and 90% of websites have flash content with in them? The funniest part of all was when Steve Jobs was scrolling through the New York Times and a big Lego block appeared showing that the flash plugin was missing!! How embarrassing !

What will I do with this thing?

Since the Touch came out, I have had one beside my bed. I use it in the wee hours when my insomnia makes going back to sleep difficult. Since the touch came out I have also had a cheap pair of drug store reading glasses beside my bed so that I do not have to squint at the screen. That all changes now! In addition, with the iPad, I will be able read, watch movies and Tv shows etc. Cannot wait! It is also going to replace my heavy 9 year old iBook which gets light, but important, use while I am on the road.

I agree it is an amazing product, especially at this price.

Btw: I'm very happy it doesn't do Flash, considering the piece of crap software that it is. And for Apple I can see a couple of advantages:
- Stupid Flash banners won't be able to ruin the browsing experience
- There will not be any competition from free Flash games that Apple already sells in its App Store
- Better battery life

It depends on what levels of artistic technique you want to work. I'm a graphic designer, working on Ae, Ps, Maya, avid and fcp. Photoshop without stilus and pressure sensitive tablet is just a better "paint" application.

The ipad is not a pro tool, if you work for a living - buy a specialised device, this has been designed for other uses and people.

Processing power of the ipad is lame, RAM is too, screen is small for serious stuff.

If it was a pro tool - it would be priced as such. It isn't.

Of course Someone will find "artistic" use of the gadget, just lime "ocarina" app on the phone.

Don't worry - that doesn't make you come across as a snob at all.

Right now the ipad is a toy.

No, its an e-reader, internet browser, word processor, entertainment centre, communication tool AND a toy.

<please read the above as a lighhearted comeback - no offence intended>

Fortunately 90% of that 90% content is adverts. :D

That’s true with every consumer electronics device. Early adopters always pay a premium in more ways than one. At least we know with Apple’s revision history, it’s only going to get revved once a year.

I wonder if this year we will see a capacity bump. Isn't everyone expecting a 64GB iPhone (4th Gen) this year? Which would mean a 128GB iPod Touch in Fall, so would Apple wait a whole year to update (well almost a year) the iPad? I wonder if that would affect sales.

please, read what my post was answering to, before posting such an agressive post. I was reffering to a post stating that the the ipad could be an artistic device.

Wathever man, peace.

Apple has a bad history of crippling the products they sell and ignoring the simple things the COULD DO ,to be fantastic ....in favor of .......What exactly ? playing it safe?

No, you are entirely wrong. They do it out of sound and very well understood business principles. A clear, simple offer will sell better than a complicated futuristic gadget with lots of options because a) people can understand it and b) they aren't confused about which model to choose (in the case of different models having different features).

Why did iPod do so well? Because it's message was crystal clear: 1000 songs in your pocket. It had less features and cost more than the other MP3 players of the day, but it still won. It didn't win because it ticked technical boxes, it won because it fulfilled a much more fundamental need. That's what the iPad will do and what netbooks don't do. Geeks want laptops and features, normal people want functional devices that are both easy and fun to use.

If you want an explanation, of sorts, see the Simpsons episode where Homer designs a car. That's what you seem to want Apple to create, because you are a geek. Luckily for us, Apple seem to know what they're doing.

Just read my reply back - was a little joyless - no offence intended friend :)

Question: why is having a black stripe on the back front page news? Just wondering.

Also, another poster said maybe putting the antenna thing in the Apple logo. While that sounds cool, I just have these questions:
-Does the Apple logo have the proper size/dimensions?
-Can you move the other components around so you can put the antenna there?
-How effective will having the antenna be there compared to being at the top?

It would be interesting to see breakdown pictures of the iPad.

Not necessarily true. I want one but I'm not gonna rush in and get one immediately. This is Apple, and if history is to be trusted; early adopters will be severely punished by a second gen product with better features and a lower price.

The history of other companies is that you might have bought an orphan just 3 months later. Imagine buying an HP Slate. If sales don't pick up in the first 90 days, it will be dropped, and HP won't placate any of it's customers. I trust Apple to at least support this unit, even if it flops, for at least a few years.

So now we are ranting about a black antenna strip. Seriously!?

Well, the amount of serious discussion about the iPad around here seems to be at about the same level as the amount of serious news reporting that Jon Stewart does.

Thankfully, comedic content makes up for it :)

They'd have to wait until late in the year (like November) to even announce updates. If the iPad isn't even available until April for the 3G unit, it would look bad updating it 2-3 months later with the iPhone. Many people would see that making their current iPads obsolete too soon & there would be a big uproar. Remember when Apple first released the iPhone in 2007 & cut the price by $200 (or roughly a 1/3) & the big fuss people made? I could see the same thing happen again.
