That black plastic makes it even more uglier after the fat bezel.

Good thing the wifi only version doesn't have that.

This is kind of funny. This design is very similar to the 1G iPhone.A lot of people(not you specifically)were screaming they would never buy another one after they dropped the plastic+metal back. Now its ugly.

Well, the amount of serious discussion about the iPad around here seems to be at about the same level as the amount of serious news reporting that Jon Stewart does.

Thankfully, comedic content makes up for it :)

I agree. Too many "this sucks, I won't buy one" posts. Everyone, read thread 500 and then come back. Also, the fact that one individual, or even every individual who frequents MacRumors, claims he won't buy one, makes how much difference in whether the iPad will succeed? So little that it is tantamount to zero.

Look, none of the cosmetic issues matter. This device is going to be made by the apps written for it. And from what I've seen looking at a few blogs, the developers are excited about the potential. That's what the iPad is: a shiny, new piece of potential. The fact that developers are excited bodes well.

And you know what? For people that want more functionality, the iPad will be jailbroken, no doubt. And if too much of that goes on, Apple will cave and add elements. Remember, Apple's original idea for the iPhone was web apps only and it was customer and developer resistance that let to the current walled garden app store approach, which has yielded good results.

The slightly modified design is not a deal killer either way.

Does the 3G model have “actual” GPS? If so, I would assume that would be built into the 3G radio and therefore connected using the same antenna. The iPad spec page on Apple’s Web site lists “assisted GPS” as a feature of the Wi-fi + 3G model, but knowing Apple marketing that could just mean cell triangulation.

By the way, I like the aluminum enclosure. I hope they revert back to that for the iPhone 4G. The current polycarbonate plastic is just cheap looking.

Assisted GPS is real GPS.Same as the iPhone.Just like the iPhone it uses GPS+triangulation.

I just LOVE how trolls register to this forum just to post how much "dissapointed" they are despite being "huge Apple fans". :D

Apple got Cube, Apple got Pipin, they got the lackluster sales of the Macbook Air - they can very well manage the iPad which as previously noted here in the thread will definitely undergo price cuts.

Nope, A-GPS is A-GPS. Try comparing it with a real GPS out in the middle of nowhere where you have no signal (or in a country where you cannot afford to use data trasnfers) at all.

iPad Wi-Fi only model to tether to iPhone? Why not?

I don't have the time to go through the millions of posts about the iPad to see if what I am about to say has been said already but....

I've been wondering if one of the possible reasons that Apple is offering a Wi-Fi only model is that they are going to allow iPhone owners to tether it to the iPad and AT&T is going to allow this for free?

Think about it... AT&T's reason for not getting tethering up and running was that they were afraid that people would be bandwidth hogging using their iPhones to tether to a full blown laptop/desktop. The iPad is neither one of those, just a big iPod touch.

If Apple and AT&T could strike an agreement to allow free tethering for current iPhone users I can tell you for sure that I would be lined up on the first day the Wi-Fi only model goes on sale to pick one up.

This one just looks bloody ugly

It's not ugly dude. What makes it unattractive is the bloody background and that 3d dock. If they put the standard flat dock with the other standard springboard look that comes with iphone and ipod touch it would have looked way better.

I hope you can turn off the 3D dock, change the wallpaper (which I believe you have to be able to), make the icons align to the left instead of centering, and make the icons smaller. I wish for these.

So, where is Spotlight? I did not see him demo Spotlight at all. Does this version of iPad OS comes with Spotlight? I do hope I can search all my iBooks or ebooks with Spotlight.

That’s true with every consumer electronics device. Early adopters always pay a premium in more ways than one. At least we know with Apple’s revision history, it’s only going to get revved once a year.

Really?
I preordered ATV.3 months later new model with bigger HDD.
Preordered Airport Extreme.A few months later they added Gigabit ethernet.
And the iPhone had a memory bump(2X)months before June the first year.
Then of course we have the famous iPhone 1G price drop after six weeks(yep,me too!).

So I agree with the first point.I'd be a little less gun shy if I knew it would really be a year before they drop the price or add a camera.

Don't forget that the 3g model has GPS. For some reason EVERYONE forgets this. I don't need 3g, but would like GPS. Can you imagine TomTom on this screen in your car? Lol.

Specs page listing GPS option for Wi-Fi + 3G model:

http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

Scroll down, under "Location" on the left. Assisted GPS is full GPS which is assisted by cell towers / wifi hotspots to get a faster lock.

Thats A-GPS... not GPS...

Sorry, you are wrong.Try this. When you are out where there is no signal take a picture and see if it is geotagged. It will be.I really don't understand why so many people can't get their heads around this.

Another test?Compare a 1G phone and an iPhone w/GPS.You could never pinpoint a location like that using cell towers.

It is REAL GPS supplimented with tower triangulation.
Learn it
Love it
Live it.

This is the bigest disappointment from Apple EVER! No Flash ?? No Camera ?? No Multi tasking??
I was hoping to replace my macbook with this divice but if you cat run any serious apps like
Photoshop, Logic then what worth is it? Its like having my iphone 3gs in a bigger scale!
This product was designed to be the best internet surfing experience you can get, right?
How is that possible when there is no flash suport and 90% of websites have flash content with in them? The funniest part of all was when Steve Jobs was scrolling through the New York Times and a big Lego block appeared showing that the flash plugin was missing!! How embarrassing !

A few points. No way was this device EVER going to replace a macbook. Did you really expect something that would run Pshop? I didn't, nor am I upset I can't run it on my Touch. Regarding Flash, yeah it sucks that CURRENTLY you won't be able to watch reruns on Gilligan's Island on HULU, but if you do some background reading most uber tech geeks acknowledge that the omission is a mixed bag. Flash is unstable, a battery killer, and a security risk. Other than that? The missing plug-in seem like a uncharacteristic gaffe while reading/viewing the live blogs from Engadget/Gizmodo, but after actually viewing the Quicktime keynote, I think it was an intentional dig aimed at Adobe (and one that worked if you read Adobe's whiny statement they released yesterday). Do some reading around and you will find smarter minds than me agree it was no gaffe as well. It has multi-tasking, just as my touch does. I can listen to music, surf the web, and have emails pop in... so too will this device. Multi-tasking limitations apply to third party processes, and has been incorrectly reported on even major websites. As far as the camera, and VOIP or phone service of some sort, etc., wait and see. Also, look through the recent patent announcements, not to mention the fact that this isn't even FCC approved yet... changes are in the wind. Apple just lifted the restrictions on VOIP (ATT did a few months ago).

Biggest disappointment EVER? Overly dramatic, and clearly you are too young to remember the biondi blue hockey puck "mouse", lol. I am sold even if there is no camera, or phone with the 3g. I will not be waiting for the 2.0 version (in another year). I'll buy this and give it to my eldest who will be heading to college in a year. And that is the niche this device was made for. Even if she has a laptop as well, the ability to store all her textbooks on one 1-1/1 lb device? Priceless. Betting the cost of books will be less as well...

cheers,
michael

I think it's really stupid to say it is useless to artistic people. I guarantee artists will use it. I know I will.

The New Yorker has some covers they'd like to show you "painted"on the iPhone with a human finger.

Wow are you completely wrong...

iPhone has A-GPS to assist the GPS feature to pinpoint your location FASTER. Without GPS, A-GPS will only get to withing 2000 meters of your location.

The tech specs at Apple for iPhone 3GS and iPad regarding the GPS are identical and yet you can say with certainty that one has GPS and the other hasn't?

From Wikipedia (so it MUST be true :p). Bolding and italicizing is mine.

A typical A-GPS-enabled cell phone will use a data connection (Internet or other) to contact the assistance server for A-GPS information. If it also has functioning autonomous or standalone GPS, it may use standard GPS, which is sometimes slower on Time To First Fix, but does not depend on the network, and therefore can work beyond network range and need not pay fees for data traffic.[3] Some A-GPS devices do not have the option of falling back to standalone or autonomous GPS.

Now I always thought that A-GPS was BETTER than GPS because it was GPS + the ability to use cell-tower / wifi triangulation to give it a "leg up" on startup. But the sentence above makes it sound like A-GPS could be just a replacement for real GPS that only works when you are in range of a cell tower / wifi signal.

Am I to understand, then, that the iPad is the latter form of assisted GPS, or the former? If I let my data plan expire would the iPad no longer work as a functioning GPS? If I'm out of cell tower / wifi range would the GPS functions no longer work?

aGPS is GPS on steroids...

aGPS basically means assisted GPS, and has many advantages over just GPS.

"the result of such a system, to you the end user:
-Faster location acquisition
-Less processing power is required by the device
-Saves battery life
-Location acquisition indoors or in non-optimal environmental settings"

iPad

The new iPad: It's a big disappointment. I was looking forward to a small computer with integrated web camera, such as small PC (311-HP Mini 1000NR) to travel and work comfortably.

Did you really expect something that would run Pshop? I didn't, nor am I upset I can't run it on my Touch.

The PS app doesthe basic lightbox type stuff, looking forward to seeing how that develops....

And you are right - there is little point getting this if you have a laptop and iPhone. It isn't made for that market.

My mum got a macbook late last year. Struggling to think of things she would be missing if she had got one of these instead.....

email? Check
web? Check
word processing and spreadsheets? Check
iphoto style tweaking? Check
music? Check
skype? Check
video calls? That seems to be the only missing piece. And that is no more than a year away.

It seems like the only people who will not get one of these are either Iphone haters or people who don't have the money for one. I am getting one. It will make watching movies, web surfing, and reading books while traveling a lot of fun!

Not really. I'm an iPhone owner and I can buy one. With the current features it just doesn't do enough to make it worth it for me. What you listed can be done on the iPhone, but not everyone has the same feature needs as you.

From now on I am marking each and every iPad related rumour or news with negative...

No Flash support with iPhone and iPod Touch I could just about swallow... But no Flash with this device is shocking to say at very least!

I could do with lack of Camera...

I could do with lack of Multitasking...

I could do with ugly UI and poor design...

etc...

But to exclude Flash and call it best browsing experience is LOL of the century!

Negative mark and will make sure they keep on coming in quantities :p

... why is this even an article? Anyone who's looked at Apple's iPad page can see this for themselves.

I agree. Too many "this sucks, I won't buy one" posts. Everyone, read thread 500 and then come back.

+1

"No matter what Apple does there are always people who are NEVER happy. Give it a rest. It's a great idea and the first of many. Why don't you give it a chance. It's price point isn't half bad either. At $499 I would much rather have an ipad than say, an xbox. (no, I am not comparing the two, just the $499 discretionary spending price point)." - dhdave Oct 24, 2001

I only changed 3 characters in that quote (in italics).
