I suppose it’s not entirely arbitrary.
  • They knew that they’d have to have the most popular media content providers, the most popular ebook and streaming services (Kindle, Spotify, Netflix on their platform).
  • They knew that consumers expected to be unable to use their books/subscriptions bought elsewhere with their iOS apps; they wouldn’t accept paying another, dedicated subscription or purchase for their iOS device.
  • They knew that a few companies do have at least some leverage against Apple (by being “present” on the platform with an app of their own or not)
That’s why they made that exception for “reader” apps.
Cause they’d sell much fewer iPhones otherwise.
Sure, which is why all their arguments are BS. If this really was about privacy, security and use of IP then the reader category wouldn’t exist.

Then Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and everyone else with an online store needs to get rid of their fees or offer third party payment options for software purchases too, right?

If Epic choose to see Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft then yes. But for xBox or Play Station, I don't need to purchase the game directly from Sony or Microsoft or Nientdo.

I can borrow game from my friend, I can buy games from game store etc. I am not forced to purchase apps from Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft...

…and if it were about children and their parent’s credit cards, they wouldn’t make it so hard so create an Apple ID without a payment method.

Let alone have all these microtransaction games in the App Store.

Buying new games from a game store still earns Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft a cut.

For PS5/Xbox digital only editions, you can't borrow games from a friend. You can only buy from their digital game store.

I still have choice of borrowing games, buying used one..The point is that it is not the only way to obtain game.

I wouldn't argue so much about 30%, if Apple provide other way to obtain apps on iOS (aka side loading)

As I like to say. It ain’t over till it’s over. So we’ll see.
You did say that in the thread when they appealed. And I (and many others) said in that same thread the evidence of Apple not operating in good faith was gonna bite them hard. You said maybe, which I thought was a stretch considering the merits of the case. And here we are. Apple were handed a win and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. It is irritating to see a self own like this because Apple is better, or at least used to be better than this. So at this point the only thing I'm surprised about is that Apple hasn't given their expensive lawyers walking papers after that goon Sweeney played them so masterfully.

Epic is a company that does nothing but addict kids to a game to get the credit card of the parents. A truly disgusting excuse for a company. Kids, kids, kids. Epic wants them.
If we were to use analogies, Epic is the drug cartel developing and packaging all the drugs.

Meanwhile, Apple is like the middleman and/or street vendor who sells the Epic drugs to all the kids and gets a 30% cut from each sale.

Now I understand why Apple loves that 30% cut so much and wants to protect it. It's analogous to a street dealer protecting his territory/street corner.

What a load of 💩

Let's take Spotify as an example. Before Apple allowed external purchase links, you could only subscribe to Spotify through their website. Apple collected $0.00 and Apple was perfectly okay with this arrangement. No complaints from Apple about having to give away their products and services either.

Now that there are external purchase links on the Spotify app, Apple says not only will this cost them millions of dollars annually but it's also forcing Apple to give away their products and services too?

I didn't know external purchase links were capable of inflicting this much harm.

You’re, of course, not wrong. Not by a longshot.

But at the same time Spotify, as an example, said they needed to charge more because of Apple, yet continue to raise their prices in spite of avoiding Apple entirely as you have described.

Can we all just agree that each is just as greedy as the other, and always at our expense?

Apple lets parents lock spending in the app via parental controls by disallowing IAP altogether.
Epic wants to bypass this lock by telling kids to get the drugs from the source.

Apple is doing the responsible thing by giving parents the tools they need to take care of their kids. Epic can't stand losing the drug money.

And Apple is not innocent in that regard. Apple settled a lawsuit brought by the FTC over in-app purchases by minors.

I'm only running AdGuard from this list and I don't get whatever popups you're describing. I don't think I've done anything special to configure it, so I'm not sure what you're seeing.
Same. I use adguard at the router level never had to fuss with it
