The front page news comment threads on Macrumors are always the worst. So much anger, so much bitterness, so little knowledge or perspective.

Nobody is "angry." Nobody is "bitter." Some people simply dislike John Gruber and softball questions to Apple executives--that's it. It's not "bitter," like being jilted by a lover and it's not "anger," which would be unreasonable in this context (it's a web forum about Apple---who gets angry about that unless they are unreasonable?).

If you're going to demean those you disagree with, do so honestly.

I think I’ve followed him for a decade or so now. Seemed like he rose in popularity from doing a blog and podcast early on and had a solid Mac fan base type of following. I think he has a bit of a programming background. But now he feels like a bit of a sloppy interviewer. Jumping around at times, missing simple points, etc.

I enjoyed reading Daring Fireball from 2005 to 2010 or so (and had a T-shirt to prove it). He also had a fun podcast with Dan Benjamin that inevitably lead to entertaining James Bond discussion (until they had a falling out). But by 2015, he'd cemented shameless fanboy status, and I bailed after I got sick of him inventing an argument to defend every stupid decision Apple makes. Gruber and Prosser are in a bush league of their own.

Too bad the interview was kind of a puff piece. Security is going to become more and more of a selling point for Apple and that's why I'm sticking with them. Speaking of security, anyone else notice a comparably inordinate number of trackers on this site?

I have not listened to this podcast and probably will not. Done with them. The few Appl execs that do come on these type of podcast either get such soffball questions from the hosts or they can't or wont share much inside info/plans stuff.

And I feel the Apple execs pick these pretty non-technical or non-business savvy host shows knowing that is some shelter in itself. And they know the hosts they chose or can not ask tough questions in fear of listing future access, so Apple just controls these "interview" totally.

Cynical- maybe. Unfortunately, probably not. And I like Apple. and buy their products. My large legacy computer company top execs did the same type of isoft nterviews also, when they were at the top of their field.

I’m not Gruber’s biggest fan, and sure, he is not a professional journalist, and his interviews are as bland as they come, but he’s not pretending otherwise, he’s not cheating anyone. When he celebrates this events you know what to expect.

Granted, should he try to take a more aggressive approach, it would be the last time he gets to interview anyone relevant at apple.

Cracks me up that some are rolling their eyes, really expecting an on-camera Mike Wallace "hard-hitting" style interview, snaring the interviewee in an embarrassing gotcha moment.
Haha, totally. Those wanting John to hold them to the fire over headphone jacks are completely missing the point. Thats not how it works. These are simple, easy, feel good pieces. No more, no less. The amount to of friction about them being anything different is misguided - if not bizarre.

I’m more impressed John can get so much of those execs’ time. If anything, it could have just been John and Craig. Not quite sure why Greg was included (at a certain point, he seemed to be wondering the same). But overall, I always enjoy any insight from Apple leadership team. It was exactly what I expected.

I get that it‘s pointless to ask Apple execs questions about things they will never give a candid response to, like future product development. But if you’re only going to throw softball questions at them, then what is the point, and what differentiates your interview from a paid promotion?

Zzzzzzzzzz. Another softball line of questioning of Apple execs much like with the Youtubers the other day. No hardhitting questions just fluff.

Then again the "interviewers" don't want to ruin anything for their chances at asking more weak questions next year.

I am immensely disappointed in iOS/macOS new features, this is the first time I think Craig Federighi
did an awful job, also in the keynote, lots of blah blah and no substance.
Like the Mouse and keyboard feature going from an iMac to a MBP and onto the iPad (forgot how it's called), that's niche, who's gonna use that, yes, it's very clever but 0.1% is actually going to use this.
Safari was/is good as it is, the new ones on iOS 15 and Monterey are going backwards.

I mean, if you can't ask even moderately uncomfortable questions, you're just part of the Apple PR machine.

Nobody expected Gruber to ask for a scoop re: iPhone 13 or whatever, but he has been very critical of Apple re: developer relationships of late.

Those developers are his friends and fart sniffing partners---couldn't he have asked a moderately challenging question about Apple's relationship with developers and give them a little pushback?

I guess not. Which is why he is really just part of Apple PR, like Rene Ritchie and Jonathan Morrison.

I really find Gruber to be such an annoying personality. He is an outright sociopath on his blog, and it's only about Apple and tech like 1/3rd of the time at this point.
I have been listening to The Talk Show for years now and some of those early Merlin Mann episodes really got me hooked (like the episode where Gruber and Mann talk about the "Smoker's Channels"). Then there was the "Holiday Party" episode with Mann, which was genuine and hilarious even though it was more political than one might typically appreciate from a tech podcast. At this point, I'm kind of over the virtue signaling and constant hyper-liberal motif of TTS. I'll occasionally listen now and then when certain guests are on, but I turn it off as soon as Gruber starts with his melodramatic political hot takes.

universal control in the next macOS does not even work. not set up in the first bata.
What a joke. promote features in the next macOS and find that they dont work or are not implemented yet.

And the corporate world is suppose to dump PC's and windows for this??

FAT CHANCE.

12 minutes to plug yourself, your advertisers who are paying you and the fact that your using iPhone 12's to film the interview.

NICE

the only reason apple is out doing media after wwdc is because it landed with such an underwhelming thud. so they are out doing spin. Steve Jobs used to just drop the mic
you couldn’t be more wrong.
literally, here is Steve Jobs doing an interview directly after WWDC 2005.
Jobs, or some assortment of Apple executives, have always done post Keynote interviews. It’s just that within the last few years, they have moved from regular television networks to more online platforms.

And by the way, interviewing Apple executives is not an easy thing to do. Apple does not just grant anyone an interview.
it’s the exact same thing as getting products early, if you treat the company with respect, then they give you access to interviews with their top people.
and I guarantee you, when you are allowed to give an interview to one of Apple‘s top executives, you have to agree to all sorts of restrictions.
so the fact that people on here are expecting John to go in and ask Craig “hey why does the new iPadOS suck, why is the magic keyboard so expensive, what’s the point of putting M1 and 16 GB of RAM on an iPad if you’re not gonna give it the right operating system, why did you discontinue the HomePod even though you’re giving it new features, why are you still selling a $150 Apple TV from five years ago, where is Apple glasses” is insane to me.
same with the people that complain that all of Apple‘s early reviews are quite positive. Of course they are! You’re not gonna continue getting interviews with top executives, or products early if you trash them, or treat them like garbage.
let’s be realistic people

Spent the whole time watching to see if John McClain was going to throw Hans gruber off the nakitomi plaza!😂

I think asking honest questions in a polite and relevant manner to the subject at hand should be respected. John could have done that without trashing Apple. It would have also given Craig and Greg to set the record straight on a few things without revealing classified intel.

In my opinion, Craig saved the interview session. He is passionate, well spoken, and eager to explain Apple features in a way that all can more easily understand.

John missed a good opportunity.

I can't listen to Gruber anymore - some of his opinions/thoughts are whack.

Just look back at some of his comments on the Away CEOs firing. Dude is so out of touch.
Let’s be honest - The only reason he was forgiving of Away is because they sponsor his podcast.

Usually read Gruber’s reviews on iPhone (camera focused), which find very extensive and interesting. But this was just spinning…unfortunately there’s not much for Craig to talk about on the “big elephant in the room”:iPadOS…I was holding off until WWDC to see if I should get the 12.9” 16GB, now I’m seriously considering the older model because 600EUR may not be worth “just” to get miniLED and M1.
