And if it was a real interview he would have had the follow up: "Is privacy a human right in China?"

It is, but you have to be realistic about what you can get away with in each country. A feature like this could possibly lead to Apple being blocked from China, and the subsequent loss of access to Apple products would not help the Chinese populace any.

Where is swift playgrounds beta for iPad? When can developers try out swift playgrounds beta on ipad? That wouldve been an interesting question for developers to hear.

I’m not Gruber’s biggest fan, and sure, he is not a professional journalist, and his interviews are as bland as they come, but he’s not pretending otherwise, he’s not cheating anyone. When he celebrates this events you know what to expect.

Granted, should he try to take a more aggressive approach, it would be the last time he gets to interview anyone relevant at apple.
What people mean is he doesnt ask more prying questions at all. Nothing new or interesting is learned. So its a waste of people’s time because there is no information, just talking.

I can see that POV.

There's a bit of a "I think this feature is great, do you guys agree?" "Yeah!" aspect to it.

He could've dived deeper into a few areas. His Shortcuts-HyperCard analogy was interesting, but I'm not sure where he was going with that. Why didn't he instead ask why, instead of porting Automator to iOS, they went the other way? What lessons did they learn? Is it mostly that the iPhone is a much bigger platform, or were there design flaws in Automator that Shortcuts didn't have? Etc.

I'm not sure why everything is so binary. No, he doesn't have to hit them with "Mike Wallace style 60 Minutes interviews." But he can challenge them a bit, since he does express issues with the way Apple treats developers, who are admittedly his friends.

Sounds like a perfect time to ask a mildly challenging questions about developer relations, considering they just had a DEVELOPER CONFERENCE.

Or do you disagree and think he should just offer them verbal stroking?
No, I actually agree with you. Doesn’t have to be “gotcha” journalism. But it could have been a bit more on topic: developer-centric. Indeed.

universal control in the next macOS does not even work. not set up in the first bata.
What a joke. promote features in the next macOS and find that they dont work or are not implemented yet.

And the corporate world is suppose to dump PC's and windows for this??

FAT CHANCE.
There’s a reason it’s called a beta!!

I have not listened to this podcast and probably will not. Done with them. The few Appl execs that do come on these type of podcast either get such soffball questions from the hosts or they can't or wont share much inside info/plans stuff.

And I feel the Apple execs pick these pretty non-technical or non-business savvy host shows knowing that is some shelter in itself. And they know the hosts they chose or can not ask tough questions in fear of listing future access, so Apple just controls these "interview" totally.

Cynical- maybe. Unfortunately, probably not. And I like Apple. and buy their products. My large legacy computer company top execs did the same type of isoft nterviews also, when they were at the top of their field.

reminds me of the remake of the TV show “V” with Ms Baccarin

“We cannot be seen in a negative light. (To the interviewer) unless you have an aversion to the entire world hanging on every words you speak, then there will be no negative questions. We are of peace, always :)

That similarities to what your stated and to SO many top tier executive interviews on YouTube, print and typical media TV show hosted gatheringse, is so spot on it annoys me so much.

it needs to stop.

I get that it‘s pointless to ask Apple execs questions about things they will never give a candid response to, like future product development. But if you’re only going to throw softball questions at them, then what is the point, and what differentiates your interview from a paid promotion?
I mean, he did actually did ask a pointed question right at the end. It's the first time I've seen Craig actually ruffled.

If you are worried about seeing posts on MR containing a lot of bloatware, rude comments and other unwanted drivel, use CleanMyPost X. It safely cleans posts right before your eyes, so that you can focus on what matters most on MR.
That's a fair statement, but people should be allowed a space for some juvenile humor as long as it's not below the belt.

Totally agree. 2020 and 2021 events have been rough. So many missed opportunities for good questions. And I don’t mean I want him to put pressure on Apple type questions. But he aimlessly rambles on and then that leads him to another aimless question. It honestly feels like a waste of Craig and Woz’s time. I think they seem bored talking to John. Maybe he just feels more confident in person. Idk. But even his OG podcast has been rough and I’ve slowly stopped listening to it.
I'm super critical of Gruber, but I will say---it's gotta be a nerve-racking experience, even if you've done it previously. Some people deal with nervousness by talking too much.

I can’t disagree with your points, but my point is to dislike how Apple has make it hard not to use iCloud with its apps. I like to be able to chose.
Something along the likes of the privacy features that Apple has been, very well, introducing: you can choose whether or not you want to be tracked (or use iCloud storage).
You said "but my point is to dislike how Apple has make it hard not to use iCloud with its apps."

I misinterpreted your earlier comment. I agree with this. You're right.
