HOW does Half Life 2 work? Also can you play CS:S online?!?!??! Please get back to me, debating to drive all the way to my other house to get my os x install cd which is required for this prog to work properly....

What? I just installed Crossover without a Tiger install disk.

Running IE6 on my Intel iMac. All that I can say is WOW. I'm buying this as soon as it is more stable! Everything seems to load fine. I've seen some quirks, but Javascript is running, Flash Player installed just fine, and everything looks crappy just as IE6 on Windows usually does!

Wow... I even just got a popup!

DotNet framework

Would anyone know if this would support use of DotNet Framework? There's a functionality I need where IE6 works with an outside app and the DotNet Framework in order to generate PDFs. Specifically, I'm a Realtor, and the functionality takes data for properties I select through the browser and compiles them into pretty PDFs. I don't understand it well enough to explain it better than that.

I did too but, nothing is working for me :( When I click on an .exe it bounces up, it's about to install it, then it quits. It doesn't even say "This application has unexpecdiliy quit." Now I can't find my Intel iMac restore disks at the momment but, I have my Tiger 10.4 install disc...you think the file it needs would be on there? I'm guessing it won't work because the disc was for PPC machines though :(

Any help?

Edit: Ah poop....nevermind... Is there anyway I can get this file otherwise?

I tried to install .NET 2 and it didn't work, got a generic Windows error dialog during installation. For what you're wanting, Parallels should work just fine.

Office 2003 stuff is listed as bronze and Windows XP related support appears less then robust at this time. Given that I wouldn't expect any Vista targeted applications to work for a long time on something like this.

Likely it needs Xwindow support and you already have that installed on your system. Those that don't have it installed need a Tiger install CD that supports their hardware so it can get Xwindow support installed. (to bad it uses Xwindows but it makes sense given the origin of this product)

Crossover (which is based on Wine) has been around on Linux for a while now.

Crossover does a pretty good job at "emaulating" Windows** so that many Windows apps run.... however some (esp. those from Microsoft) have a number of funny quirks.... I'd say it's OK for messing around with and having some fun, but not really suitable for serious work. It's a useful thing to have around for when you _really_ quickly need to run a Windows app...

That's my twopence worth...

---------
** Wine stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator", becuase is doesn't "emulate" Windows. It provides an implementation of the Win32 API and a run-time environment.

And MS would rather violate an order from the EU to provide usable documentation for their APIs than avoid millions of dollars in fines. Gee, I wonder why?

If WINE takes hold, expect some more of those funny quirks to creep into MS programs. After all, we must expect to buy a full copy of Windows to "enjoy the user experience," right?

How are people getting Internet Explorer? Are you downloading it from Microsoft.com? Can someone post a link?

Thanks in advance. Scott.

Configure > Install Software > Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1

Will Crossover allow Windows apps to recognize the built in iSight? What about an external USB webcam?

It's fantastic! Already got it up and running with some apps! :D

Hmm.. I don't see the point. It's $60 for Crossover, how much is a real copy of Windows? At a glance, it looks like XP Home is $85.

Since Crossover emulates at the API level and not machine level, it will always be trying to hit a moving target. Whenever Windows changes or adds an API, Crossover will lag behind as they reverse engineer that API and then code for it, test it, and release it. Even now the coverage is only something like 90-95%.

WINE is a really cool idea...I don't see why this company is trying to package it and sell it for so much. Why doesn't the WINE team just build the integration layer themselves?

Edit: I guess it *is* cheaper than buying Parallels and Windows. So if you need to run side-by-side I guess this is considerably cheaper. Still, since WINE is open source, can't we just download the source code and build it ourselves? If I had an Intel Mac I would definitely be playing around with this.

Um...we are the Wine team

We *are* the Wine team. We do the bulk of the heavy lifting on Wine,
and $60 is how we buy bread and water and pay the electric bills.

And when it works, Wine is much nicer than dual booting, and a non OEM
copy of Windows is $200, not $85...

Does anyone know if DarWINE is working yet, btw? Slightly OT, but Wine-related.

Anyway, I'm glad this is finally out there. I'll definitely get it when I get my Intel Mac. Hope to see more software supported soon...my current list of software I'd like to see support for is 3d Studio Max, the Starfleet Command series (granted, SFC3 is extremely buggy even under Windows so I understand if it doesn't work), Age of Empires 1 and 2, and MSN Messenger 6 (with iSight support).

yes to Quicken

...Anyone here try quicken yet?

I had an alpha version of Crossover Mac last month and was able to install Quicken 2004 on a MacBook, and it works nearly perfectly. Even the online downloading stuff. The only problems so far are some of the popup windows (dialog boxes) are too small, can't read the text. I think this was addressed in today's public beta.

The alpha version supported Quicken 2002-2005, but the beta now lists 2006 as maybe buggy, but functional.

Also, of general interest to all of you-- the alphas only had bottles for Win98 and Win2000. Now they have added XP, but if you are trying unsupported software, try a Win98 bottle first. And as soon as you have a bottle's config working well, "archive" it (using the menu option) in case something goes wonky later you can restore it.

Hello. I am about to purchase a mac and move from windows to OS X. I couldn't be happier!

However, being a musician I am sorry to be leaving my current sequencer FL studio. I am also however over joyed to be able to try out logic and digital perfromer.

I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to download FL studio and try it out on crossover for me. I know it's a beta, but some initial results would be cool. Thanks,

Stitches

p.s. The full version can be downloaded from www.flstudio.com. It says try it out. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me!:)

i've been running Parallels w/XP Pro for weeks now and it works like a charm, with *every* Windows app i've thrown at it. and it's fast (nothing like the awful Virtual PC)--i can't see any slowness due to emulation. Warcraft III, MS Office, Dreamweaver 8, IE, you name it.

in fact, i'm using it right now, on a 17" 1.83GHz iMac w/2gb RAM.

That's because there is no emulation.

CrossOver (WINE) doesn't have a "theme" for XP. It's all 98/2000 style (classic).

architecture apps...

if this ever gets stable and can run Autodesk apps (AutoCAD, Revit, VIZ, 3d StudioMax) then it will be a "killer app" for architects who, right now, are largely forced to use Windows.

i need Revit and Bootcamp will work but the way that Crossover functions is really what i want...

help out the architects and there is a huge market waiting to buy Macs!

That's a good app to test. I recently tested it on Parallels on my MacBook and it worked very well, except the audio was just a tag laggy. I imagine it would perform better on a more powerful computer.

Anyways, I downloaded it again to test in CrossOver.. installation went smoothly, but the app doesn't really work. It'll launch and go into a partial full screen mode, but then I can't do much and both times I've opened it it just quits randomly. I'll later try restarting CrossOver but right now I'm downloading Half-Life 2 :p

Has anyone done objective side by side performance testing of a particular program running in Crossover vs. Parallels vs. Bootcamp ?

What about memory requirements. I only have the stock 512 MB installed.

Parallels works very well but a chunk of memory goes to operating the Windows OS. Can I assume that in Crossover's product, since there is no Windows OS, your memory requirements are greatly reduced?
