So I've played around with it - I installed IE 6 and WMP 9, but it wouldn't install Flash player (got stuck on the download page), Civ2 or Medal of Honor.

It definitely shows its Linux roots - functionally it's impressive what they've done so far, but the GUI very unpolished especially in the Manage bottles section, with some preferences windows popping up, and others sliding down (and why's Configure not in Preferences?). It needs a UI designer to make this usable.

I wouldn't call it a beta either - or even an alpha. It's more of a proof of concept.

I won't be giving up Parallels any time soon, but that's not to say I don't wish it well. I'll see what it's like in 6 months to a year.

I managed to get Battlefield 2 to install, despite what their website says, however, when I try to launch it, it insists that the DVD isn't in the drive.

attachment.php

maybe that's what they meant by known not to work...

Morrowind at 29 % of installation

Ok, here's my uninformed, guaranteed-to-make-me-look-ignorant, post.

Will installations of Windows programs scatter .dll files all over the hard drive? Will malware run? Just curious how much of a controlled environment this is.

Mac Office 2004, Photoshop CS and InDesign CS are all DOGS on my MacBook via Rosetta. Would the Windows based app's run faster through CrossOver?

I hope, somebody will manage to install AutoCAD and 3d studio.. These are most commonly used apps for architects, and until now, they were unavailable for macs;(

Damn !
Morrowind was the first program that I could succesfully install, and now it can't find a CD-ROM/DVD Drive

I give up...for today at least

Try using a no-cd patch from gamecopyworld.com and see if that works.

I just tested out utorrent and it works fine. The only issue seems to be port forwarding if you are behind a router.

Everyone...read up on the developers forums...and remember, this is just an initial BETA...not everything is going to work right away:

------------

Just to let you all know so this does not get asked 100 times. Games with CD copy protection will not work. There are ways around that, but we will not discuss that here. Any one posting links to sites that have such information will be removed.

Game demos, games under Steam, and MMORPGs do not have copy protection and have better luck of working.

From my testesting I have found:
* Games with <= DirectX 8.1 have better chance of running.
* OpenGL games have the best chance of running.
* most Unreal Engine games do not work for us yet.
* most Quake III engine games seem to work fantastic.

I know I'm going to need Autodesk/AutoCAD in the very near future so this is a lifesaver! No buying windows for me.... EVER!!!:D
Good luck. As of now, nothing beyond AutoCAD 2000 works, and even 2000 is pretty buggy. Perhaps with Crossover on Macintels, more people will contribute to the porting and debugging.

Anyone seeing any issues with external USB or Firewire devices like hard drives, optical drives, or floppy drives?

Can't try out my USB floppy drive for a while yet.

this might be a really dumbarse question, but... -

Why is itunes and apps like internet explorer among the top pledge packages to convert? Why not just download the mac version?!?

Mac isn't the only system Crossover works on. Linux doens't have an IE or iTunes in it.

There are better sites than that, especially for older games, but no cd patches should enable the games to run without the disks if they have installed correctly, http://www.megagames.com is a good place to start looking.

If you install a no-cd patch, backup the old executable file in case the patch you try is broken or you want to download a patch for the game as they generally don't like no-cd patches.

(Mod's if you think I shouldn't link this, I'm sorry, I have read the rules and cannot tell if it's against them, if needed remove the link.)

did anyone say anything about obtaining illegal copies of games?

Can someone test foobar2000? I'm dying to know if it works! Please post a screenshot if it does work. I'd also like to know how the settings dialog looks then, and if global hotkeys work.

So many questions. When MB/MBP get Merom, I'm so buying one.

no

real copies should work!!!!!!!!! the games that you tried to install are copies!!

or i am wrong? the system requesting the cd/dvd is what usually happens when you install a pirated game; if you get a image of the cd or crack the game should run

i don't think i am wiser than you ; i am only a future switcher triing to help you, because i see that error since i am 10 in pc's

i am sorry if you get me wrong and let me know if battefield works

This is with Wine, so I guess it is possible that the disc detection isn't working.

"Virtual Machine" means "Emulated Machine"

ChrisA said:
Yes of course you can't. These is NO emulation. Parallels does not work that way. Parallels runs the your Windows software directly on your Intel hardware. It does trap privlaged instructions but these are very few.
Parallels does not have to do ISA emulation (except for a few, like you say) - but the virtual machine is definitely an emulated PC.

A virtual machine is an emulated machine - with or without instruction set emulation.

Why would "WINE" mean "WINE Is Not an Emulator" otherwise?

get the image of the game and run it on deamon tools. it will run.

this thing was designed for ppl who have the original but want the dvd drive free so its not illegal if you have the original;

i guess you have it:rolleyes:

First impressions are maybe not so good. I installed IE6 and it started fine and loaded the default MSN homepage. When I tried to go to MacRumors, I got an unblocked pop-up but the page never fully loads, and now it's hung.

Why would you even think of installing internet explorer? meh :(

baby jesus just cried a bit...
