On a different note, does anyone else hate the stupid unibody MBP design? My brother has had once since june and the battery is already at 58% capacity of what it use to be and he can't change it. Not to mention, his all in one mousepad still isn't something im use too yet.

Window's sucks with even with boot camp, you have to use an external mouse or you're SOL.

This form over function crap is really starting to get to me.

What do you mean by all in one mousepad? I'm on the older MBP, is the mousepad on the current MBP that much different from the one on the older one?

*

Hi, my name is Michelle. Welcome to Apple!
*

Michelle: How may I help you today?
*

You: Hi!
*

Michelle: Hi there!
*

You: I was wondering if it makes financial sense to purchase a Macbook Pro now.
*

Michelle: That is a great question.
*

Michelle: A MacBook Pro is a great investment when it comes to your computing needs.
*

You: The same computers have been out for eight months--and if they release new ones, will I be able to return the old ones for the new ones?
*

Michelle: Is this going to be your fist Mac?
*

You: yeah
*

Michelle: we do have a 14 day return policy.
*

Michelle: But there is no word on any new models.
*

You: elaborate on the 14 day policy?
*

Michelle: You have 14 calendar days to return your product from the date you receive it. There will be a 10% restocking fee if you are returning opened product.
*

You: 10% only if it's opened... is that right?
*

Michelle: Right.
*

You: And this is a refund you're speaking?
*

You: And how would this work using the Apple online store?
*

Michelle: You can return to a retail store, or simply call Customer Service.
*

You: an apple retail store?
*

Michelle: Yes.
*

You: OK
*

You: one last question
*

Michelle: Sure!
*

You: By saying no word on any new models, do you mean that there aren't any that you know of... or that there won't be any new models this month--period.
*

You: And don't mean to be a bother, only asking for my wallet's sake
*

Michelle: To be honest, this is something we just don't know about.
*

Michelle: A lot of people are asking but there is no answer.
*

Michelle: We find out about new items when you, the public finds out.
*

You: Interesting. Thanks!!!
*

Michelle: You're welcome.
*

You: That's all--thank you very much
*

Michelle: You're welcome.
*

Michelle: I would be happy to help you make a purchase today however.

(Still continuing conversation, asking about Education Discounts)

Pretty lulzy though.

They're noticing the fact that we're all asking XD

How was the last MBP release announced? was it through the website? A commercial?

Just to contribute to the topic of the thread itself...

I think that Best Buy and other retailers are AWARE of the product cycle for MBPs, so they're lowering their prices in anticipation. Might not mean anything though.

hey there! another newbie here... this whole macbook pro update rumors has had me checking this forum every ten minutes for the last three days until I finally decided to register... I need to get a mac (first one btw) asap, but I really don't know what to do, I need it by March 1st and all I can afford right now is either the macbook or low end macbook pro 13" but if by my deadline they haven't still updated the the pros I don't think it would be a smart idea to get it, so I'd have to settle for the macbook (250GB vs. 160GB)... any word of advice?

Get a hard drive update in the low end macbook if that's the only thing holding you back, don't forget to try for the student discount if you are in school.

Yeah, I guess, I just didn't want to have to spend the extra 50 bucks (might not be much but still, right on the edge of my budget :p) anyways I'll wait 'til the 24th to buy it so maybe by that time they already updated them and won't have to settle :) thanks

It all depends on what you are planning on using it for.

The update we are all hoping for is the new Arrandale processors, which will give a significant increase in performance. If that increase is not important, then the current range will certainly work for you.

That said; I would hold out as long as you can. The updated range will probably be around the same price point, but the old ones will be discounted. You may find yourself being able to afford the higher end current MBP 13" 2.53 4GB RAM for ~$1200.

Also - if no update comes from Apple, and performance is important...look at other options.

A major gripe on these boards is that other manufacturers have already released the new Intel chips, with Blu-ray, HDMI etc. Are those things also important to you?

Since Apple are behind, technology and feature wise (at a premium price), it may not be the right time to switch.

With a limited budget, keep your mind open and don't get sucked into desires over needs.

+1

Good post.

this might seem like a stupid question, but i absolutely love the design on the current macbook pro's....

with the upcoming update (hopefully!), do people think that the design will stay the same, including the fairly 'square', slim casing, and the black bezel around the screen?

do people think that the design will stay the same, including the.. black bezel around the screen?

Just as a clarification, even on current MBPs, only the models with a glossy display, i.e. the 13", and most but not all 15" and 17" (unless BTO with anti-glare option) will sport the black bezel. If you do add the anti-glare display option, it will come with a silver bezel around the screen. I don't know for a fact but I would expect this feature of the design to remain the same.

LOL!!!

It's a joke, a reference to when we thought there would be powerbook G5's and they came out with the MacBook Pro

Just to clarify, the PowerBooks next Tuesday Macrumors meme is actually when we were hoping for PowerBook G5s to be released as the PowerMac had G5s. As it took longer and longer for the PowerBook to be updated there was tons of talk about the possibility for G5s to be out in a laptop. Apple one upped us by finally announcing the switch to Intel thus ending the speculation. The name change to MacBook Pro came a good bit after that announcement and caught us all by surprise. Initially some hated the name, myself included, but no one really cares anymore.

There's your unabridged Macrumors history lesson.

Hi, my name is Pat. Welcome to Apple!

Pat: Good evening.

Pat: How may I help you today?

You: I am looking to buy a new MBP 13" and i really like it but I have a few questions about the specs

Pat: I'm happy to assist with that.

You: I have chosen to upgrade to 4gb of Ram. I just am curious if that is really needed or if 2gb is ok

Pat: Good question, what type of things will you be using the MacBook Pro for?

You: Internet, some photo stuff and just everydays stuff beyond that

Pat: Do you take a lot of pictures?

You: Yes I have a new baby and we take a lot. I also have a few videos

Pat: Okay, great! Congratulations!

You: I also chose to update the HDD to 320gb is that worth it also?

Pat: What type of videos do you work with? Are they family movies?

You: yup just short videos of the baby.

Pat: Well, I see you using the space over time. Especially when you start collecting pictures, and also when your video collection goes up.

Pat: As far as the RAM goes, you can use the 2GB fine but I think you will benefit from having 4GB over time.

Pat: The MacBook Pro is designed to last our customers 5-6 years. With 4GB of RAM memory and the 320GB hard drive, you won't have to upgrade over the life of that computer.

You: 5-6 years. that is great but that brings up my last question. I cant seem to find the spot where I can upgrade to i5 processor. I found it on the dell and sony computer I looked at it but I can't seem to find it on the apple site. Can you help me find it....or maybe that is not out yet, if that is the case when will steve break the news.

Pat: We do not offer the i5 with our MacBook Pro's.

You: but so many other companies do. how long until they do. I wouldn't want to buy one only to have a new MBP come out 3 days later! I hope you understand

Pat: We do not have any information about future product releases.

You: Do you think it is worth waiting for it. i am not a real patient person.

Pat: I think the MacBook Pro we sell is going to be great fit for your needs.

Pat: The thing with waiting is that there is always something new.

You: There is currently something new?

Pat: Well, there always is something new with technology, right?

You: I was under the impression the current MBP's have been out for a while.

Pat: I have a 6 year old iMac and so many new ones have come out since.

You: ok thanks for your help. you have been great

Pat: But I still continue to use my iMac everyday!

Pat: I'd be happy to stay online while you proceed, in case you have any other questions come up.

You: Thanks for your help Pat.

Pat: You're welcome.

I think this is hilarious. These poor workers must be hating there jobs. I had to stop it started to really get fun.

You: My son says its an old processor and I am buying refurbished but it says new

You: Ok I will buy now. Thank you. If it comes with Core i5 I can return right?

funny, but man i'd hate to be maria or pat or michelle right now! it must be hard to LIE and sell OLD technology for EXORBITANT prices

The MacBook Pro is designed to last our customers 5-6 years
really??? aren't these computers supposed to be for creative professionals - audio, video, graphics...?? my mbp is only 3 years and struggling. and i bought top of the line 3 years ago. humf.

Marcos P: How may I assist you?
*

You: Do you guys know when i come to the website?
*

Marcos P: Yes.
*

You: wow that is creepy haha

you make it sound so easy!!!

Ha - Yes, well...it certainly is easier said than done. ;)

Apple has a knack of turning us all into magpies; hell bent on obtaining that "shiny" thing...to the point where it is "almost" more important than what it actually does. Fortunately, Apple has a great track record in the "shiny" things doing what we want.

The sad thing is...we always want more - the latest and greatest. We are becoming scared to commit to purchase items for fear of "something better", even though what is there today would meet their needs.

For my comments, if this is a person needing a computer for school and they have a limited budget (who doesn't these days), they have weigh up the pros and cons (of the Apple brand). For most folks...they just can't afford that Ferrari, but a BMW would still meet their needs!

BTW - I drive neither :(

Fortunately - some of us are immune to the shinies.
