Why would Apple care if the GFX supports DX11? If anything the graphics card will have to run OpenGL, core animation and OpenCL at lightning speeds. DX11 is only nice for those 1% of Mac users (statistic made up) who bother to boot into Windows 7 via bootcamp to play the games. (I am part of that minority but even then I hardly bothered to do the said above, seeing that I already have a better PC just for that job)

The importance of DX11 is really a matter of whether it would be beneficial to BootCamp and whether this is a priority for Apple. The upcoming NVidia chips with DX11 may also have better OpenGL implementation, but I do not know if this is the case. It would be interesting to find out.

My hunch is that Apple will choose a graphics option that allows for seamless switching, whether or not the user has control over it. However, I wonder if the issues with the flickering and yellowing iMac screens had/has anything to do with video drivers or if this is a hardware/firmware issue. If the former, it might be possible that Apple is waiting for the issues to be resolved before updating the MBPs; although clearly there were at least some firmware issues involved.

I think apple will refresh their entry level macbook pros (13 and entry 15) with only higher speed core 2 duos. But will give option of i5 for macbook pro 15 and i7 for macbook pro 17. I am predicting this from the iMacs that were just updated in November (entry levels 21.5 and 27 have high speed core 2 duo 3.06ghz but only highest end 27 offers i5 or i7).

In other words don't expect Apple to stick i5 in Macbook pro 13 (maybe i3) because that would actually make them faster than the entry level 3.06ghz iMacs which would be a serious marketing error (similar price mac laptop can't be faster than similar price mac desktop).

According to history, apple's iMac line up has been quite similar to Macbook pros.

yep, but the entry level macbook is better than the entry level macbook pro 13 inch.... so mabey they'll put i waterevr in and next time they update the imacs a lil bit better, like trying to say the biggest number, i say 100, you say 200, i say 300,..... like that

I hope they update soon! I have been waiting to buy a Macbook Pro for about 2 months and it is driving me CRAZY! I hope those updates are pretty big (not just a increase in RAM).

Its actually quite the opposite. ATi, although their drivers are not really optimized for OpenGL, have 100% compliance with OpenGL and are not artificially crippled. The FireGL series, although they claim optimized drivers for Maya etc, according to Natcoll design school, it makes no difference.

nVidia on the other hand, cripple the OpenGL capabilities on GeForce chips so the Quadro cards have a higher perceived value. Quadro and GeForce cards are identical hardware wise. The only difference is in the drivers. You can get a Quadro workstation card by soft-modding a GeForce card. Voila - instant performance gain in OpenGL.

Same here! Really hope the update is by end of this month at latest.

Screw this Apple I'm sick of waiting; you just lost a sale. Ima go buy a $3000 iMac instead. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

MBP needs to update soon to keep up with stuff like this...

I hope not. That's way lower specs than I'd expect, except for the BluRay drive—which is most likely not happening.

Apple is mostly in competition with itself because they own the market on Mac OS—and rightfully so. If you want a Mac with higher specs, you've got to wait. The "competition" comes out with new stuff and you perceive Apple hardware to be slower so you end up waiting. Or you're oblivious or don't care and you just buy it as is. Either way, you still buy a Mac and not a similar spec'd PC because you want a Mac not a PC.

If you're comp shopping both, that basically means that you don't think there's value in design or in Mac OS over Windows—or you think it's so slight that it doesn't really matter—so you'll probably buy the Windows box every time. In that case you're not, and probably won't ever be, a Mac owner.

God damn I'm sick of waiting...

I bet they're going to show it on macworld just now and then release it about a week or something after. But it better happen soon anyway, my pc just broke down and I'm dying for a new macbook pro

anyone know when apple's current financial quarter ends? i bet they will release when the new Q starts. i've noticed almost everything they sell has a staggered release schedule. probably to keep quarterly financials stable and not have too much growth in one quarter and almost no growth or a loss in another

I disagree (slightly). I think a lot of current Windows users see tremendous value in a Mac. Form factor is obvious, but Mac OS too. Windows users are fed up with viruses and stability etc, etc. I get the sense they WANT to move (Apples marketing has helped in that).

So - they start looking. It is obvious they are going to compare. Anyone who makes a purchase over $1K for anything and does NOT look around and compare is quite frankly...stupid. It is totally natural to value something new against what you have (and the latest version of what you have). I bet you will do the same when looking for a new Mac [compare to your existing one).

The problem is: For a lot of folks, they value other things too.
  • Blu-Ray
  • HDMI output
  • High performing processers

To move to a machine that does not have them AND comes at a premium price...it's tough to justify! In that sense, yes - they will always be a Windows user - but not because they don't value form and Mac OS. It is simply not that black and white.

Question: Do Mac users not want these things too?

I think they do.

I think Apple needs to decide who it wants to be.

I hear some fans comparing Apple market share to Microsoft, and how it won't be long before they overtake them.

With their current strategy; they never will. There is simply not enough in it for users to convert.

Now - if Apple don't want to "beat" Microsoft, great! They have a very successful business already...but please...can all the fans shut up with the stupid obsessions [beat Microsoft], please!!

BTW - don't forget...that laptop is $700! Over half the price of the entry level MBP 15". It seems the value of Mac OS and form factor are increasing in Apple's eyes.

The market will decide.

Not based on the historical releases of MBP's.

If they did do that...we are mid-quarter now. That means expect no release (half of it is already gone). They won't release next quarter, because the iPad will be available.

That would mean....July!

No offense...I hope you are very wrong! :) I'm banking on a late Feb date.

I believe the staggered release schedule serves two purposes:

  • Marketing - keeping Apple at the forefront of our minds
  • Logistics - ensuring supply chains can be focused by fewer people (it would be a huge task for key designers and engineers to be spread over so many concurrent projects)

very well put, i agree " i can make a much better computer than this for half the price " but it will never be as good as a mac, ever

the worst thing about buying a Dell/HP is the support and crapware. Windows has worked OK since Windows 2000 and the problems have always been everything else people install off the internet or some computer show they attend

Just posted this in a similar topic down in the notebook area however this seems to be where the partys at!

As we don't have Best Buy here in the UK (unless you count the local pound land shop called Best Buy) I cannot comment on what's happening there but I've just had a very interesting conversation with a stock manager in my local Comet store. (For those who don't know, Comet is a large home electronics retailer in the UK).

After I enquired if they stocked the 15" MacBook's in store, because they only have the 13" on display she advised they'd not had any in store for off the shelf purchase since Christmas. They've not even had their display models replaced. All orders have been ordered into store for the customer, or delivered directly to their home.

On checking availability for me, she found the existing 15" models were all listed as "withdrawn" meaning she could not order any into store however there is 'limited' availability for home delivery. (A few models including the mid 15" and MacBook Air's show out of stock on Comets website).

As she showed me the stock availability screen, she pointed out six new MacBook place holders named MacBook 10Q1 01 (and so on up to 10Q1 06) which all had a placeholder price of £2000. Although she obviously couldn't give any detailed info she said they only appeared when they actually had them on order or in the warehouse but were not on general sale meaning they'd could be out within 'days' but could also be anytime up to the end of March (end of Q1).

These were also NOT for the iPad as there were several other listings for MacTablet 10Q2.

At doing what, exactly?

As I see it, software drives component changes because it is more and more demanding. Other consumer products are/have adopted new technologies too (HDMI, Blu-Ray etc). Try editing AVCHD video format on a C2D...it ain't pretty.
