I don't mean to speak for the author, but I was under the impression that the post was simply meant to show the presence of intel iSeries chips available on the market below the $1000 price point. This would suggest that the market is already saturated by the new chips and that systems with similar hardware specs (not talking OS here) are out there. This supports the idea that any new Macbook Pro will have the Intel iSeries chips inside, which is completely relevant to any discussion of a forth coming release as we have all been speculating what would be including in the refreshed MBP.

Further, given the price points of even the i7 windows machines out there, it would make sense for the low end MBP to sport the i5 as opposed to the i3 as has been speculated. The price difference between a similarly spec'd i3 PC and an i3 MBP is likely to be substantial to the point of making the MBP less marketable than if it held an i5.

Regardless, I don't think the post was advocating you go out and buy one of these computers instead of a mac, but even if it was, many people over the course of the past 1800 or so messages have contemplated buying the current edition MBP or waiting, and within that decision it is only reasonable to consider alternative systems entirely.

Why pay $1500 for an MBP with a C2D chip when you could get newer technology for substantially less. Yes there are cosmetic reasons, yes there are reliability factors, but in the end the decisions are personal and should be made with consideration of all available options.

Thank you.

Some posts here have questioned the need for upgrading the CPUs
in the MacBook(Pro)s, when in fact the newer generation chips are
becoming the norm. Apples look "behind the times" if they offer
only Core 2 CPUs.

It's like when Apple continued to put Core Duo CPUs in the Mac
Minis - until they got the email from Intel that said "Steve,
we're not making those any more - time to upgrade". Intel shuts
down the production lines for old CPUs not too long after the
new generation ships. Apple doesn't have the choice not to upgrade.

same here !! ;)

It can wait just a little bit longer, I just got the most expensive iPad there was..... Damn , that would suck for me but would be great for Apple. Could you imagine if the Mac Pro, MBP, and iPad came out within a few weeks of each other? That would be some big numbers for them.

giggitty*..
hi i got tired of just reading and wanted to post, so i registered.

Regardless of when the MBP will come out, there is only one option and that is to stick the i family in the brand spanking new MBP
Also, even though i7's are mainstream, they will not be outdated any time soon. There is no generation ahead capable of fitting in a laptop just yet, doing so would be ludicrous because of heat.
Looking ahead I also don't see intel running too far ahead of AMD(sure amd is still building their current processor on 45nm, but if you check current bench marks amd loses to the i7's only whooptee doo. AMD's fastest cpu is the same price as the i7 920 version... ok maybe AMD is a lil bit slower, still it's impressive a company the size of a sperm has any competition to the intel giant.)
Continuing tho AMD will have the processor + video card to beat in the next few years. Fusion is promising, and intel is trying to do the same. Except AMD > Intel when it comes to GPU.
That leaves nvidia with a thumb up their butts.

But let's be realistic, Apple isn't going AMD any time soon. So we got an i7 upgrade with in the few days or months. With a kick ass amount of ram, hdmi and things that makes u wet. Gulftown is extreme version only(for now), no mobile version. So that gives us a year or something like that to enjoy our MPB and then cream over another update with hopefully some blu-ray or something along those lines.

yay! ok. I love reading this thread, don't flame me I am new. i do not own a mpb yet.
Sorry for my analogies. =]

Someone should start a pool as to the release date, let people bet on it in the hopes of winning enough to buy that new MBP :) as it is, here's hoping for the 16th!

Well said, thankyou.

I'd pay $2000 if the MacBook Pro's displays would finally adopt IPS technology!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, even the iPad at 9.7" will get IPS.

I believe you have 2 weeks to return it with a 10% restocking fee

10% of total cost? but what if i dont even open the box?

The US Apple Store says:

For eligible Mac, iPod, and third-party products, you have up to 14 calendar
days from the time you receive your item(s) to initiate a return.
A 10% restocking fee will be assessed for opened items.

Shipping fees are not refundable.

http://store.apple.com/us/help/returns_refund?mco=MTM3NDgyOTE

Not opened, no 10% fee is how I read that.

Now, why would anyone ask here rather than clicking the "return policy"
link at the Apple Store?

Why would you "demand" a newer version? You ordered the damn thing. If the new ones come out then just return the old one and buy the new one. Unless it's a CTO system there should be no problem with that.

Most popular Post

I've been following this discussion since it's inception and it prompted me to do a paper on anticipation marketing. Coincidentally, this is the most popular story out there right now. Nearly 2000 comments and nearly 142000 views. Compare this to the story about the iPad announcement: 1224 comments or the iPhone announcement: only 1017 comments.

Pretty interesting since this forum discusses an update to an existing product. AFAIK, the MBP is the flagship product (and am looking forward to replacing my smelly iBook with one in fact) but it has been fascinating and exhausting reading this forum from 1st to 1915th.

Just another observation: Very few flames. MacRumor members are very polite and willing to answer questions informatively and respectfully.

there is also https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/873909/ number 5 of waiting thread not always as friendly as the one here but if you read number 1-5 you will find some 1000 good posts ;)

yeah at least 8000 of those posts are just random chat or wishlists ;)
so did you put all the reading in a kind of questionnaire and the plot
a graph or something like that? if so it would be really interesting to see.

The Core2Duo line will be exhausted soon. Time to move on. =)

No but tracing the attitude of comments from anticipation ("I've been hitting refresh for 36 hours straight!") to anger ("Forget you Apple, I'm going to buy a Dell instead!") back to anticipation ("March 16th is the day!") is quite a trip.

"Anticipation marketing" teases the consumer Want into a Need.
