Correction: The longest MBP update took 287 days.
Also today is day #287 since last update.
So, it is now officially the longest MBP update ever.

So, do you people have an opinion on whether the fact that Mac users know/count exact number of days after the last update is a normal thing or sad thing or even somewhat creepy thing or what? :)

Essential, I'd say, to avoid being screwed by Apple bringing out a new machine just after you've bought the old one. Happily, MacRumors does the counting though.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow! I have a feeling though that we might get a launch at the same time as the iPad goes on sale.

Cheers,

jahman

MB Pros out of stock at 4/6 Bestbuys in Greater Boston area

I've been keeping a tab on MBP availability in the Bestbuys in the Greater Boston area for the last month or so. Till about a week ago, only 1 or 2 out of these 6 stores were out of stock, today, 4 of them seem to be out of stock. Don't know if that really means anything, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :)

I'm for vertical pixels

I prefer 16:10.

Agree - another phrase for "wide screen" is "short screen".

1920x1080 is a big step backwards from 1920x1200. Similarly, any other "short screen" that trims vertical pixels is a step backwards from 16:10 or 4:3.

One of my favorite laptops has a 14" 1400x1050 screen. The newer replacement has a 14" 1440x900 screen. I really miss the 150 vertical pixels, and hardly notice the 40 extra horizontal pixels. (I still use both, the only advantages to the newer "short screen" system are that it's x64 dual core, and it works better in airplanes due to the short screen.)

MBP this week?

I don't put a lot of credence in the anecdotal stories that fuel the rumor mill (though hearing them accumulating does make my heart slightly flutter). Adding to the frenzy, I spoke with a tech person at Apple about a different issue last week, but thought to ask about the MBP update possibilities. He first said, "I can't say anything until next week." Before I had a chance to get mildly excited, he then said that they don't usually know anything until after the units are released. He said at one release they were briefed on a new product and were told that leaking any information in advance would be cause for dismissal. When they came out of their meeting with their advanced information, they found out that the new product had just been officially released. I cannot honestly read anything substantive into my conversation with him, unless I fully activate my "blinded by wishful thinking" mindset, or if the MBP actually does get released this week. I have been approved by Apple for a MBP 15" replacement for my defective machine. I was trying to decide how much to add to better my base upgrade, when I got sucked into the "new MBP Update Vigils." Now I am hanging on to hopefully see the new MBPs come out before my AppleCare expires sometime after the first week of April.
At this point, any replacement machine will be a lot better than my current unit, but if the release of the new version comes in time, that will make it that much sweeter. We'll have to just wait and see what happens. Keep the faith!
I was thinking if the possible release of a Mac version of the computer system used by Tom Cruise in "Minority Report" was potentially coming out soon (just a rumor), maybe I would wait for that update instead. After all, how long could it be? The movie came out years ago! Virtual holographic touch screen (without a screen) sounds like fun, and a memory system that not only goes back in time but forward too. The only drawback would be printing to a carved wooden ball, which might be considered a backward step for such a hi-tech system. :)

Was that calculated in Excel or iWork? No, seriously, you could be righterrr. Let's have that party soon.

Just Google "number of days between two dates", and you will find plenty of websites that do the calculation for you.

I didn't know the exact number of days until recently because I want to replace my 3.5 years old Vaio laptop with the "overdue" MBP. I used Macrumors buyer's guide to get this info.

its a date!

if you have an iphone you can add AppBox lite for free or pay for a more robust AppBox Pro. Either one contains a date calculator. Very practical tool. Without it I might not have been able to recently celebrate my 21,000th day since birth. :)

You mean the traditional Japanese, and traditional Chinese that is written vertically is going to appreciate the loss of vertical pixels? Sounds very logical, yep.

I checked the Best Buy's in my area as well, and only one Best Buy in the state of Utah has the mid-range 15" MBP in stock. It's hard to say if this means anything at all, other than BestBuy - like the rest of us - thinks Apple is wayy overdue for an update..
If the Dummy SKU's in their inventory system indeed are intended for the updated MBP's then Best Buy expected them in stock on the 14th and this is only the result of that miscalculation, not really a sign of anything coming down the pipe.

I don't think any language appreciates the loss of pixels OR LETTERS for that matter... Seriously, you're using a keyboard to type a 16 word sentence, why do you feel it necessary to drop the vowels from each word?!

What a shame. The widescreen-equivalent to 1400x1050 should really be 1680x1050 on a "serious" machine. 1440x900 is a step backwards, not forwards.

16:9 is probably a bit too "short" for a work machine but I can live with it as long as the overall resolution is high enough. E.g. 16:9 on the 27" iMac is fine. ;)

I probably missed here something, because I don't understand why exactly Tuesday? I know some will start yelling "it's already writter" and stuff... So sorry, for asking this. You know, 82 pages it's pretty much text to read. So why Tuesday? I'm very curious :) :apple:

my dreams

i have a ancient xp compaq currently, and i need to upgrade to the new MBP asap. here is what i hope to happen out of all this:

  • The new Macbook Pros are quietly released when the Ipad is on april 3rd
  • The entry lvl 13.3 inch MBP has similar specs to these:

    13-inch 2.5ghz
    Intel i5
    4GB Memory
    250GB hard drive
    SD card slot
Built-in 7-hour battery(maybe more, idc, my compaq get me 10 min now lol)
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 256MB(im out on a limb here)
    all for $1,199.00

  • $100 off with student discount, and oohhhhhh plus a free itouch
  • even more on a limb, mr. jobs starts the summer-free-itouch thing in may instead of june, so i dont have to wait.
  • no backorder junk and speedy shipping
  • and as an added bonus all my most glorious dreams come true

who am i kidding, this is gonna take 4ever

Intel i5
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 256MB(im out on a limb here)

Can't happen - the 9400M is incompatible with any Core i* CPU, and the 9600M is ancient.

Hope for Intel integrated graphics plus an Nvidia GeForce GT 230M or GT 210M. Also anything less than 512 MiB of VRAM would be a joke today in a machine priced as high as an MBP.

That's not Compaq's fault - batteries are consumables. If you'd replace the battery for cheap (compared to an MBP), you'd be back to the original runtime.

I'm expecting a G210M style chip like the ION2 for Atom (Pine View).

Obviously i know nothing of graphics cards...
