but it makes so much more sense to get wildly excited for another tuesday!!! coupled with this:

'dpastern' posted a rumor in the comments section for the "MacBook Pro Update Due for Launch as Soon as Tomorrow?" article:

"As I stated in an earlier thread, I ordered a MacBook Pro 13" last Saturday. I was told that it was out of stock local, but it would be ordered, should be in by this Thursday, and could pick it up then. I already paid for the 13" outright, pending delivery. Between last Saturday and today, I decided that I'd go for the 15" instead and rang my local supplier today to see if this would be OK. Well, well, well, interesting news.

I was basically told that there is no stock at all for any of the macbook pro units. None. And, their Apple sales rep had told them that a new range of MacBook Pro units WILL be introduced next week. This guy was 100% certain.

Intel's recent stuff up advertising i5/i7 MBPs, special prices in different countries, lack of stock in different countries, and an overdue update all point to something about to happen. When resellers are telling me that new units are just around the corner, and to hold on, as I'll get a better unit for the same, or better price, is onto something.

I'm hedging my bets on next Tuesday, 23rd March. And I don't usually hedge my bets.

Dave"

It's just another Tuesday... Still, I hope he's right.

WHO KNOWS WHAT COULD HAPPEN MAYBE A PARTY

Old hardware

I have been a Mac person for over 11 years, and things have really changed. There was a time when buying a Mac gave you both hardware and an OS that was miles ahead of the rest. Now the OS is still class leading, but it runs on old technology, which is sold at prices which pretend it is still class leading. "How are the mighty fallen". Seems that Apple are too busy with phones and various sizes of iPod Touch to care much about computers. I won't pretend I am about to go over to Windows. However, if someone comes up with a workable and easy Hackintosh for laptops that would be great. I guess that by the time the 'new' Macbooks come out, the rest of the computer world will have moved on and they will still be obsolete.

I guarantee there is an update coming, as read below about the new updated Australian Apple laptop ads and new pricing, and it looks like Apple Australia has either deliberately or accidentally released new ads with new prices. Looks like the Land of Oz has leaked the info first. Firstly, its widely known that Apple will be releasing updated MacBook / MacBook Pro / MacPro / MacBook Air hardware along with updated pricing, but it seems Apple for some odd reason has released the new ads with the new Australian pricing. Despite the ads showing the new pricing, naturally they point to the existing older version on the Australian Apple Store.

I have taken the liberty to hunt down the links to these genuine Apple ads reflecting this new pricing as proof:-

•MacBook – now starts at $1,299

OK, let's say I purchase a new Macbook Pro today from Apple. What is the longest time frame I can return it for an upgrade when it comes out? Does it have to be within a week, a month, what is the time period I am able to return it and get the new model?

The US store policy is:

http://store.apple.com/us/help/returns_refund?mco=OTY2Nzk2Mw

Returns are subject to the Apple Online Store Sales and Refunds Policy. For iPhone returns, please refer to the iPhone return policy. For eligible Mac, iPod, and third-party products, you have up to 14 calendar days from the time you receive your item(s) to initiate a return. A 10% restocking fee will be assessed for opened items. Shipping fees are not refundable.

The tag line "Beauty Outside Beast Inside" dates from 2008/9: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Apple_Inc._slogans, so it could be an accidental rollback to a previous ad campaign. Hope not though!

Those are the old prices from just before the white MacBook and new iMacs were released. They've since gone down to A$1599 for the 2.26GHz 13" MBP and A$1999 for the entry MacBook Air.

My money's on a stuff-up. The Aussie dollar is actually stronger now than it was when those new machines were released so I doubt there'd be a price increase.

Quite correct there Chundles...

Currys

Over here in the UK we have Curry's as our kind of "technology" shop... just thought i'd post this web link http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/r/macbook+pro/0_0_0/ which is a search for macbook pros.

You can see that they are all (except for one, which is out of stock) advertised with OS 10.5. When I phoned up to ask about this I found out that these are actually all 2008 models (i.e. pre-SD card slot) and they are completely out of stock of 2009 MacBook Pros. When I asked when they were getting more in, they said that Apple would not tell them when they could recieve their next shipment of MBPs.

Bit suspicious?

The low inventory at so many stores most certainly means that updates are coming soon. How soon is the big question!

Could just be another case of a staggeringly incompetent Curry's employee unable to use the company's stock control system. Got my fingers crossed though that it means something will happen very soon!

bring on the MBPs! I have been waiting to upgrade my macbook but I don't know how likely this rumor is..possible just a system error from bb?

I'm not saying this means much of anything, but I checked my local Best Buy's in Central Florida and none of them have ANY 15 inch MBP's. They can still be ordered through the website, but none are available in Central Florida right now. Unfortunately, the 13 inch models ARE available (I'm looking to get a 13 inch).

Now, if we all went out and bought a 13 inch MBP and ran the stock out, maybe Apple would roll out the updates. Then we could just all take the "old models" back for the updated ones and we'd all be happy again! :D;)

If it were only that easy huh? Here's to wishful thinking!

I stopped by two Best Buys yesterday on my way home from the airport, the one in Tampa and the one in St. Pete, both had all sizes and all tiers in stock... guess it just depends on where you are at this point. Tired of waiting, think I'm going to abandon the rumor mill for awhile and just wait for cnet to run a story or something, I'm losing too much sleep waiting for any news that the release is here or confirmed to be coming.

I can't see them releasing a new MBP until the Ipad has been around for a while.

Why would they bother releasing two important new products so close together?

Why would they bother releasing two important new products so close together?

Because a person who spends $500 to $800 on an iPad might wait awhile before coming back to the store. A person who spends $1200-2500 on an MBP almost certainly will wait awhile before another large purchase. People who show up for an iPad aren't likely to get talked into both, but people who show up for an MBP might be.

Apple needs people in the stores to sell them the iPad. People wanting a full featured laptop have to be convinced, some can be, some can't. But releasing he MBP now and letting us buy it means we won't be in the store for them to try and sell the iPad too.

They're not competing products, people who want iPads either have an MB or MBP and don't need an update or don't want a laptop, those that are in the market for an MBP aren't (for the most part) terribly interested in the iPad and are probably not likely to buy it without it being impulsive in the store when they buy their new MBP. Makes sense for the MBP to come out a week or two after the iPad, let the initial craze run its course, restock, and then get a whole new crowd into the store and sell them on both products.

You know what sucks?

I'm leaving for a year in Afghanistan (contractor) and I've been hoping I could buy a new MBP before I leave so I don't have to worry about it getting damaged in the military postal service. I leave in a week now, and have pretty much given up. Even if the DID announce them, there's no guarantee they would be available right away. One good thing, my 4-year old MBP still works like new, looks new, no issues with it!

(It is the ONLY laptop that survived one year in Iraq, in a squad filled with Windows geeks who all laughed at me when they saw I had a Mac. Every PC that went over there suffered some kind of damage, from either the dust, the sand, the heat, humidity, etc. Yeah, I was talking sh*t at the end of the year.)

Update now guaranteed

Hello all,

I've been lurking on the site/forums for a couple of months now. I've been a windows user for years but having been harrassed by a Mac owning friend I'm determined to give Apple a go and see how I get on. My 1GHz Win XP Athlon desktop is looking very very dated after repeated delays to its upgrade but it struggles on for now.

I've been keen on a nice high end 15" MBP and was ready to buy in early Feb until I saw the pending update warning in MR's buyers guide. Now I join the ranks waiting for the rumoured refresh.

How do I think the update now guaranteed? Well the money I've saved to buy the MBP has been languishing in my current account (what those in the USA would call a checking account) since January. With another Tuesday passing this week and no update I've moved it all to my notice savings account to earn some interest while waiting. I can get at it, but its not as easy to access now. Having stashed the money out of reach Sod's law dictates that the new ones will be out next Tuesday I bet! :)

That said I wonder if the folks saying that "iPad first" are likely to be right. The iPad seems to be number 1 important for Steve and Apple at the moment so I can see them wanting to getting that out to a blaze of publicity first with no interruptions/distractions before doing anything with the computer lines.

Sigh the wait goes on
Paul
