I'd like to see a link to that page pleaseCorrect me if I'm wrong. I read posts all the time and I never joined til now but if I'm not mistaken you can change your text tone by actually changing the sound file for the text directly from the root of the phone using apps such as disk aid. I've actually succeeded in changing the tones so that when you change the text sound to Chime for example I have the Metal Gear Solid Codec sound. My iPhone is JB but I directly implanted it to the root of my phone so when I take off the JB features I use it still rings with the MGSC sound if you'd like I can find the page I read how to change the root sound files. Its just a matter of changing and renaming the files accordingly.
I Still want to know why there isn't an app to changing your text tone for non JB phones. Does Apple deny the modification of certain iphone parts (ie. SMS tones)?
well it's kinda moot now that custom SMS and Email tones are in iOS5, i'm rocking them now since beta 3, just wait a month and a bit and there you go
You are you putting custom tones into iTunes? I can add a specific tone to each contact, but only the iOS defaults and expanded ones, nothing I create.
What format are they in? Been rocking per-person since Beta 1 but... nothing on making my own.
anyone know where I can get a silent text tone? I am jailbroke but cant find one. I do have a silent ringtone. in my business my customers call and text 24x7 and I cant shut my phone off because my kids may need a designated driver or bail money!! just kidding but I do need it. Thanks
When I go to Settings>Sounds>Text Tone I see an option for "None". Is that what you want?
I wish it was that easy. I tried that first. that will shut off all text alerts so you wont get any from anyone. I want to make a silent one as default and then use a normal one for my family and friends.
it is that easy, you can set each contact to have the "none" option for sms tones you dont need to create a custom blank sound, I just looked at the option to do that.
you must not have tried it. thats the first thing I did but when you activate that it shuts all text tones off. I still need to hear a tone for when my kids text me
I really appreciate your help but please read my post. if you turn the sound in the text setting to none then it will override all of the individual settings. I tried this before asking. in theory you should be correct but in actuality your not! I have tried this on many different phones.
I need the ability to have NO incoming text tone for all text messages except for about 5 family members. with my job I get shift workers calling and texting me 24x7. I cant turn my phone off because my kids may need to get in touch with me.
If you go into settings and into sounds then it will shut all off but IF YOU GO INTO THE CONTACT, edit the contact and set it for the individual contact, IT WILL ONLY DO IT FOR THE CONTACT.

thanks but you guys are not paying attention to me............please read one more time!
I want all text sounds to be silent
I want only 5 to make a sound
99% of the text messages I get are not in my contact list they are people I have never talked to. so I need my default text sound to be silent. NOT none! then I can go to the individual contacts and make them audible. I cant say it any clearer than that. there is no other way it can be done. I just need a silent text sound. I already have a silent ringtone for all incoming calls.
----------
when you put the text alert to "none" it overrides all individual contact settings. thats why it has to be an actual silent text alert or tone. because none means none!
please dont respond because its obvious you cant read. its not my contacts. I only have about 350. its for the people not in my contacts list like you! I dont want to hear you text me at 3am. but I do want to hear my wife, my 2 daughters, or my son. and thats it. so default tone must be set to silent. and the individual alerts can be set to chime. setting to none sets all to none with no individual override capability. I just need a silent text tone. and I am jailbroken so that doesnt matter.
I made one in GarageBand for you. Let me know if you can download and use it:

well it was definitely in post 65. but to be honest when I said all text alerts except for about 5 of my family I really thought that was enough explanation. but I guess I should have taken it further.
well it went into ringtones and I need it as a text tone.............any ideas?
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)
Well then how do you get the text alert to use it. Cause they are separate on the iPhone. SMS has a few to choose from and ringtone had several to choose from but one cannot acces the others or so it seems!
