It looks like the poorly executed rip-offs of Apple's earliest version of Aqua circa 2001.

Additionally it seems to fly in the face of this little thing:

I'm honestly surprised they didn't change the name (though this would take a huge brand awareness campaign) while they were changing the icon and changing "AirTunes" to "AirPlay." iTunes deals with much more than just music these days. It seems like they're going to have to change it at some point; why make a new icon when you're going to have to trash it shortly?

Some of us Apple-kids sure are resistant to change...?—even though Apple is the usher-of-change.

But honestly, about a month ago, maybe 2 months ago, I was predicting (to my self) that iTunes was in desperate need of an icon change...Really, a CD in the icon?...and how old is that icon?

The new icon may not be jaw-dropping, but it was surely long over-due.

I also happen to be an iOS icon/interface designer, so (in my own doug-world) I know WTF I am talking about.......LOL

...and how old is that icon?
Not as old as you might imagine, in fact. The current icon I'm almost certain only arrived with iTunes 7, less than 4 years ago. Previous to that it went through several different colours for the music note.

four years is ancient history...LOL

I like the new icon actually. It looks more like an App store icon. I was surprised that they didn't rename iTunes along with all the changes since it does a lot more than just play music. Grand Central would've been a good name if they hadn't used it for another of their technologies.

Although calling it iTunes is stupid, as it hasn't been a music playing app for a long time, it's somewhat like the iMac. They CAN'T rename it. The brand recognition is too great. We're stuck with iTunes for awhile. Maybe forever.

I don't think you give people enough credit. It's like that ATI to AMD thread on here. You change the name with ads and maybe a 1 time pop-up to let people know it's called something else now. iMedia at this point makes more sense than iTunes, IMO.

Personally, I think iTunes is missing some fundamental features that it should have to be a full blown media manager. Namely, it should have a photo viewer in it to make it complete. I mean iTunes can handle photos to my iOS devices and send them to my Apple TV units, but it cannot view them within iTunes? Why not? Why should I have to open preview or iPhoto or whatever to view photos when iTunes does everything else? A side-bar button for photos and a screen with setup information for slide-shows (possibly to music, etc.) would be a nice addition to iTunes, IMO and playlists could be made for slide-shows or photo albums (and of course they could be imported automatically from iPhoto if desired or Flicker or Mobile Me). It would be more useful to me than "Ping" for sure.

NO. Everyone knows that every feature ever included in an Apple device MUST be used or it voids the warranty, kicks your dog, and puts a hit out on your children.

I really don't understand the thought process of people who get mad about the ability to use features or choosing not to use them.

They just keep adding new bloat instead of removing the old. I don’t care if it’s optional or not, I know somebody or a team of somebodies developed this stupid thing instead of doing something useful with iTunes.

Check this out! Gizmodo organized a iTunes icon design over a year ago:

And here are the results:

Maybe there's a nice one there; I'll check it out.

I can't believe this is not 9.3 instead. They didn't add anything. The UI is still terrible. In the iTunes store, when I hit the back button, it's too close the the music buttons when I'm playing music and thus ending restarting a song. They need to enable ways to speed up the database, because I'm still getting a bit lag when going through my 226GB music library. Don't care about Ping. The new way to display cover art is weak. And I still can't wirelessly sync nor can I stream my library from the "cloud". Now I have to look at an ugly icon. Sigh. Talk about a rush job.

That pretty much sums up my dissatisfaction... well said. APPLE, PLEASE GET A MOVE ON THE STREAMING MEDIA SERVICE!

For those who dislike the new icon...

Go in the iTunes resources (right click on the iTunes app, show package contents, Contents, Resources) and make a copy of every filetype icon (for example, iTunes-aac.icns) and the iTunes.icns file. This way you will be able to put these ones in the iTunes 10 package (after having backed these up as well). :)

It was time for a change!!!! I wasn't fond of it right away either... However, I think it will grow on us :p

I actually like the new iTunes logo (get over it :p); it just has a nice button feel to it. Although, the background might be nicer with a lighter shade of blue.

not sure how I feel about it. won't know for sure till I get it in my dock
