First I just want to make everyone aware that I am not looking to start a flame or troll thread, but I am actually looking for a constructive debate, as I'm sure that I'm not the only one debating between the 8 Plus and the X.
Currently I am debating between getting the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. Regardless of the phone I get, it will be in the 256gb in Space Gray. I am unsure if the X is worth the $200 premium over the 8 Plus after looking at the differences here on apple's site. I looked at that comparison multiple times and the only differences that are apparent to me are the screen and camera. There is also TouchID on the 8 Plus, and FaceID on the X. But I am mostly worried about battery life.
Here's some questions to get this discussion started:
Which phone are you getting and why?
What are your thoughts between the 8 Plus and X?

I went with the 8 Plus mainly because I've used the 6s Plus for the last 2 years. I'm used to it. I like the screen size. I like the Touch ID. Everything coming with the 8 Plus is just an improvement to something I'm already comfortable with. (CPU, screen, camera, Touch ID etc etc)

My reasons for passing on the X:

1st gen hardware (I just ordered my first watch... the Series 3) I'll let someone else beta test the X and will check back in a year or two

screen size - don't want long and narrow

Don't care about Face ID - I like Touch ID

notch is ugly and annoys me (Maybe I'd get used to it? I dunno)

Specs - I don't really care ... the 6s Plus is still plenty fast but I am getting the same CPU as the X anyway

Those are the main reasons... and enough for me to get the 8 Plus. The new gold color is interesting... can't wait to see it. I will post my opinions when I have phone in hand.

I'm going from a 6 Plus to an 8 Plus. The X is a beta-release concept phone designed by a committee. I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with it, but in the meantime, I want a proven design that meets my utilitarian needs. I'll let others be the guinea pigs.

I'm buying the iPhone x, 'cause ever since I saw how amazing portrait mode is, I had to have it on my iPhone. Except, I didn't want an iPhone as big as the plus model just to have portrait mode. So, iPhone x comes along - a smaller iPhone with portrait mode. It's perfect!! I don't care about the ugly black bar at the top of the screen, I don't care that the plus model has better batter life, and I don't care about the facial ID or silly animojis that I'll never use. I just want a smaller model iPhone that has dual lens. That's all I care about. If the iPhone 8 had it (and I don't know why it doesn't), I'd get it instead of the x.

I don't think the iphone X is so beta. Maybe just Face ID, but otherwise, it contains fairly mature components.

Thanks @TravisPNW
I currently have a 7 Plus and I don't dislike the form factor. One thing that has me leaning towards the 8 Plus is that I have several cases and unused screen protectors that I can still use. TouchID is great when it works, but it would be better if it were 100%, so I didn't let that factor into my decision. It's the same with FaceID, although with FaceID I wouldn't have to worry about my thumbs and sensor being clean. For that reason I chose to leave TouchID and FaceID out of my decision as they both have their pros and cons, and I would be satisfied with either.
What you said about the X being 1st gen hardware is something that has me hesitant.
The screen size, 0.3" difference, isn't enough of a difference if we were just talking about the screen size itself, but in this case the X is slimmer than the 8 Plus. It's only 0.14" wider than the 8.
The notch is ugly, and that is the main reason that I am not sold on the X!

I am waiting on a plain 8. Fits in my pocket, isn't first-gen tech, under $1000 with tax and AppleCare. I know it wasn't an option, but it's what I am doing.

Portrait mode does look pretty cool, I won't lie!
Does the 8 Plus have better battery life than the X? That is my biggest deciding factor.
I too don't know why the 8 doesn't have the dual camera actually. It's pretty surprising.

In my opinion it isn't too different spec wise than the 8 Plus.

I went from a 6 Plus to a 6s because I liked the smaller phone and within a few months I missed the larger screen. That is the only reason I upgraded to the 7 Plus. However some days I do miss the size of the 6s so perhaps I will give the 8 a look too, thanks @Flojomojo

Instead of making a thread asking strangers about phones that they haven't used, why not take the time to test each model in person at the store? That would be the most logical and practical thing to do. That way, you can make an informed decision on your own.

Yeah that's what I was talking about with the beta reference. I'm not sold on Face ID... and I prefer Touch ID.

If the only thing that was holding me back was the Face ID I'd probably get the X... but I have too many other things I don't like as said above... screen size... notch... etc.

Yep... I'm comfortable with the size of the phone. The 6s Plus is the same as the 7 Plus which will be the same as the 8 Plus.

It ain't broke... I ain't fixin' it.

There is that option, but being that the stores don't have them out and I am trying to preorder makes it not possible. Besides I wouldn't be able to test the most important feature to me in store, the battery life.

The notch on the X is what got me in this debate, and now I am seeing that it isn't just the notch but the battery life could potentially be less on the X than the 8 Plus.
The size doesn't bother me, although smaller with a large screen would work too.

1) You can test the phones in the store when available, and then determine if you want to order one the model.

2) Pre-order when you are able to, and take the 14 days to decide if it is the right phone for your needs / wants.

Asking strangers on a forum about a phone they haven't used is like playing darts in the dark. None of the opinions posted (about their opinions on certain new phone features) carry any weight, at least they shouldn't. The only opinion that matters, is the one who will be paying the bill.

Nothing wrong with looking to the forum for confirmation of certain specs or features. But, to use the thread debate as a logical means to an end (at this point in time) is illogical to me.

At this point in time the 8 series doesn't make sense to me, the way it's priced leaves it pinched between the X at the top end, and a 7 that's not materially different but much cheaper if you want 128gb or more storage... there's nothing wrong with the 8, and I actually prefer the glass back design to the aluminium predecessors, but it just isn't worth the price hike for minimal feature upgrades. My plan is to wait it out on one of the cheaper iPhones for another year (probably 6s+) and see what they do with the 'XI' or '9' in a years time. If I'm not sufficiently impressed I'll probably get a reduced-price 8+ then.

i follow the never buy the first of anything guideline. I dont want to be the guinea pig for any company. The iphone x just seems to be a rushed product that was pushed out before it was ready. Before its unveiling i was set on getting an x but i instead opted for an 8.

I'm a bleeding edge nerd so it's ONLY X for me. I was one of the first people to own a portable mp3 player back in 1999. 32mb of storage for $100 (yes mb or 30 minutes of 128kbps mp3).

Tech and this kind of stuff is my greatest joy. It's not for everyone. Some like cars, some like hiking or climbing mountains. I love tech.

I've already owned a Plus, a 6S Plus... and it was fine, I loved the screen size but it was huge and heavy. The 8 Plus will be noticeably heavier than the previous ones because of the glass back.
For me I would rather stick to my 7 and save my money than upgrade to the 8/8 Plus because it's too small of a step forward.

I've also been longing for an edge to edge screen phone ever since Samsung started doing it with their Galaxy S line, but I don't care for Android, I've owned the HTC Evo, Moto G4 and a Blu. The X is the best of both worlds for me.

Don't worry, I won't be competing with you for pre-order if thats your thing. Personally I cannot deal with something so hideous.

The 8 plus is the value king this go round. It might be overshadowed by the wow factor of the X (which is also an awesome phone)-but this is one beast of a phone. It’s the ultimate version of the iPhone many of us have loved for the last 4 years. It should be rock solid for years to come, and I’m glad they didn’t skimp on the processor and RAM. I’m beyond excited to receive mine this Friday!

My wife wants an iPX. I’m on the upgrade program so I should upgrade also. Why not a + model? I had a 6+ and I hated the size. I have a 7 now and a iPX is only marginally bigger.

In my wife’s hands a plus model might as well be a tablet.

I'll just say that more people are just simply being rational about their purchasing.
