IMO, its great to see other company's make the R&D projects public. Google and others do highlight that such projects are research and if the public wants to, can buy them and join the experiment, such as Google Glasses. Some projects won't be released commercially, others will.

Apple are a serious hardware company, not a playground of experiments and abandoned "projects". I am very sure they have prototypes of experimental VR mechanisms which they've considered, but, unlike various other naive companies, they are prudent enough to keep them secret and locked inside a cabinet of the R&D team at Apple, knowing they were only experimental projects, not release them as products which they expect people to take seriously.

DSLR cameras achieved film-like quality without resorting to incorporating Kodachrome and chemical developing.

Nonsense. DSLR cameras never achieved film-like quality and never claimed to. They are totally different beasts.

A cheap consumer grade print film still has better dynamic range than the most expensive flagship DSLRs. DSLRs have long-since surpassed the best films in terms of resolving power. That in turn put more strain on the optics which are the limiting factor now in DSLRs tech. On the other hand while digital has more resolving power per square inch, it's not very hard to build an 8x10 box camera and get amazing quality from relatively cheap optics. So film still (and will always) wins on absolute resolution. But digital has far surpassed film in low light.

TL;DR, DSLR does not have film quality, never did, never will, not meant to. But that's okay.

Market saturation is fine. It's the stock market that sucks.

The iPhone is a fine product that's making massive profits and will continue to sell in large amounts.
And yet just because of ridiculous shareholder expectations they have to keep growing.

Apple should let the share price fall and then when they can afford it, buy themselves off the market!

The GearVR also makes it worth every penny. Watching movies in IMAX with surround headphones really is eye opening.
And in the real world [1[ does VR actually matter one bit?
IMHO, nope.
[1] Normal use i.e. not watching the crap that Hollywood puts out these days which at best can be only 10% of your day.
What about the rest of the time eh?
What about the data slurping that Google does? Does that not matter?
To me it does.

Yeah, the keyword there being "if". As great as some smartphone photos can be, anyone who uses a DSLR can see the difference in quality, and the sensor is what makes it. Still, this could make it have the best smartphone camera quality, and I'd be intrigued by that.

I know several people who swear their cell phones are as good as my DSLR. They're the same people who often ask me what "tricks" I use to get my pictures so sharp.

I think it is good if iPhone sales fall, even if for once. Too high share of iPhone in total revenue is a weakness, and Cook understands it. Thats why Apple is moving into cars, home, movies, whatever, they are desperately trying to diversify.
And I wish Apple success in that.

That was Google backtracking after all the bad PR and the fact that the price was too high for normal consumer adoption. They did the same thing with the Nexus brand. Don't misinterpret spin as openness.

After 9 years I think we are all plagued by yearly upgrade fatigue regardless of manufacturer. Not to mention that our pockets are not forever deep. But especially for Apple, the too-high price of their yearly upgrades have taken a toll, especially with devices lacking in innovation bragging rights. This afflicts not just Apple. If, as I suspect, the 7 turns out to be a 6s2/6s+2 all but in name, then there will be very little justification for another expensive upgrade this year. It may be that we will have to wait for the 10th anniversary next year to see some innovation. But how does one innovate the form factor? May I add that I'd like to see real and robust innovation in wireless technology, a la South Korea. Without robust and ultra fast wireless, device innovation is applying lipstick on a pig.

If Apple is under the impression that they can release a minorly updated 6S in late 2016 and make it a huge seller, they're sadly mistaken. If that's the case, I won't be upgrading from my 6 Plus anytime soon.

See, Apple has a tendency of being late to the party with new features, but when they finally arrive they're awesome. At least that's how it used to be. At this point Apple is moving from "fashionably late" territory to just plain rudely late to the party.

Well, maybe they have no choice this year as the technology wasn't quite ready this year, so it's next year's iPhone which will bring phenomenal sales again.

I don't get this obsession with VR -

Fortunately, it doesn't matter if YOU get it or not. All that matters is that many other people do :)

Right, they release their unfinished projects as "hobbies" instead :D

In Romania Orange sold it's entire iPhone SE launch stock in about a week and we were told we'll probably have to wait 2-3 weeks on our order.
By all accounts the lower-priced SE was a good idea for certain markets providing a bit of a boost to somewhat offset the expected overall decline due to, amongst other reasons, high US$ and market saturation.

Which is the point of what the article and many here are saying. The choices available today are so different than say 3 years ago.

I don't see why people need to defend Apple. They will survive and have billions in the bank. It's simply choice and what's important to each individual. For some it's a phone, for some it may be a car or name brand suit.
The article can say anything it wants, but I don't think anybody has the pulse on why 1 billion apple customers decided not to buy iphones. And it's always nice to know if I don't want a Ferrari I can buy 50 Honda Civics instead.

Additionally Apple being a corporation, if they shouldn't be defended they shouldn't be criticized either?

The bolded should be "some". VR is going to go the way of 3D in my opinion.

What's the benefit of a curved screen?

Easy access quick launch bar at the side you can operate one-handed on a 5.5" phone.

You can assign unique colors to your most important contacts. Edge lights up that color when the phone rings so you can have the phone face down on a desk and know if an important call comes in and who's calling.

Scrolling info ticker along the edge of the phone with the phone in sleep mode to see important info at a glance (stock quotes, RSS feeds, etc). OLED allows you to light up a small area of the screen at minimal power consumption, Apple's stone age screen tech does not.

It automatically means you have zero edge bezels. How does Apple get away with fatter bezels on their cell phone than some 60" TVs?

"DSLR-like quality" is a phrase definitely pushed by marketing, but the gap is getting smaller. Cell phone cameras are taking better and better pictures every year. They're obviously not as good as DSLRs yet, but it's probably just a matter of time. 20 years ago no one could have imagined taking such incredible pictures with such a tiny camera embedded in an ultra portable handheld device. 20 years ago, even DSLRs couldn't match the quality of film SLRs.

And what's even more important here is that most amateur photographers who buy entry level DSLRs will probably be able to take just as good of pictures on their iPhones in just a few years, which is huge. My wife spent $1,000 on a DSLR but being that she's not an experienced professional photographer, the quality of her pictures is only slightly better on her DSLR. Even though iPhone cameras may never truly be "DSLR-like quality", the pictures taken by the vast majority of people will probably be just as good on near-future cell phones as if they used DSLR cameras.
Ok, try taking a non cropped picture of a Grizzly with your smartphone and getting out alive. I have a DSLR (36Mpix) and use a 500mm Telephoto for shots like that.
Sure, for some, a DSLR and a phone camera can come close but there is no way the short focal length of a camera phone will ever match a DSLR. Two different tools for different purposes. The picture I use (on your left) was taken with that DSLR and a 200mm lens just after dawn in the Badlands. The goat is 30m away from me.

Wonder if the change is subsidized iPhone pricing with att had a hand in it? I'm grandfathered in to unlimited data and the only way to upgrade now is to buy at full price or switch to the NEXT plan (and lose unlimited data)
...and the Apple upgrade program is also difficult as well - Citizens One has a lot of limitations that makes it hard to use, and stifles sales. Perhaps Apple should use more care in the vendors they select.

I think an iPhone 7 that changes in no way with respect to form factor and weight would be a disaster for Apple. Even if you give it say 25% more battery life.

People react strongly to a change in form factor. This is one reason why I think Apple has really made a point to go thinner every 2 years.

Even if the major redesign comes in 2017 they cannot make cosmetic changes, give us more battery life, and expect sales to be strong.

For this reason I believe they will go thinner this fall. Same footprint, but significantly thinner.

I predict their shares to take a hit, seeing as the only device that makes them the money is dropping in sales figures. That's pretty poor if they are the worst performing handset maker, and if it is for the whole of 2016 they will have to rethink their price gouging strategy.

Hmm 32GB standard memory would be a ******* start!

It is possible to have a blind comparison of cell phone vs dslr of casual subjects with mixed results, but that is where it ends.

I don't know anyone who has purchased an Apple watch yet. First time i'm aware of that a new Apple product was launched and you didn't see someone with it showing it off.

In my small company three of my colleagues have Appke Watches. I'd like one but in my job it would be broken in a day :-(

iPhone needs better specs to keep selling? what a load of nonsense.

even if it does experience reduction or decline in sales, that insanely high number will still blow away all others, and suck up all industry profit. as usual.

also, the top rated comments are pathetic. the cluelessness of the haters here are almost enough to stop returning.

I wish Apple would do two things it won't do: :(

1: Release a (dare I say it) Proper desktop computer, like a PC, to compete against PC's.
Not a laptop on a stand glued to the back of a large monitor.

2: Release a high end, world leading games console, to be right up there with Sony and Msoft.

Of course Apple will not do either of these, but hey, I can dream.... one day.... one day....

Apple's Pippin games console was a complete total and utter disaster, so would any other 'world leading' games console they would come up with, no big names would develop for it giving Apple 30% of their profits either.
Apples idea of a console is the Apple TV where it can make billions for all those cough, free, cough, games they make all their money from.
And you know they will never ever make a computer like a PC either.
