Odd. I didn't have to pay shipping or tax for the monitor, normally I do have to pay tax (8%) when I order from Dell.

Oh well. Eagerly awaiting my new 20" monitor.
 
Has anyone taken these things apart. How hard would it be to paint this white or silver? I think I'm going to order one and find out, what do I have to lose....$400. :eek:

I just got an Estimated Ship Date of Thursday, July 28, for the 2005FPW I just ordered. That's with the free shipping to Michigan.

What does everyone have?

My estimated delivery date was almost 2 weeks from the time I ordered it, but I received it in 4 days. Of course, I am in the Austin area, but they still shipped it over a week ahead of schedule. So yours will probably ship much earlier than the estimated date.

Here's my dilemma...

Buy 2005FPW ($421.53 w/ tax) and Mac Radeon 9200 PCI ($112.57 shipped) pair it with the, decent, B&W in my sig.

OR

Buy the 1705FP (200.73 w/ tax) and get a Mac Mini 1.42GHz 80GB 512MB Combo Extended Applecare ($492 cash locally) and then sell and/or part the B&W.
 
I'm showing a date of July 28th. Of course I ordered moments before I posted this thread so I should be ahead of everyone else.

If you're unhappy with the ship date, and you're willing to sink to the level of slickdealers, you can do what they do. Wait a few days, then email Dell to complain about how long this is taking and Dell will toss you a bunch of coupons for your next order. I've never done it, but the guys in those threads have it down to a science on how to get every last cent out of Dell.

I doubt you'll lose all $400, but you may end up with a crappy looking monitor :rolleyes: . If you do it, I'd be careful. Taking it apart should be reasonably straightforward. Lots of little screws no doubt.

But, I'd be hesitant to use some cheap spray paint. I think it will end up chipping and flaking off. My advice is to test it out on the back somewhere first. Then if you must, do the front.

tempting, but this should be the last Dell I buy for a long time :D
 
Placed my order at 1 a.m. this morning. Dell shipped the LCD by the time I woke up this morning (around 10 a.m.), and according to Dell's order information page I should receive the monitor on Tuesday. :D

That was quick!

Another option a 1703FP (VGA) based + PowerLogix 1 Ghz G3 ($200) or OWC G4 500Mhz (129)?
Mac Radeon 7000 is also equally affective (as the bottleneck is the CPU) if you can get an after market or modded one for 50 bucks.

That doesn't make too much sense, considering you are probably going to use a credit card of which the bill won't come for a while anyway...

I would go with the second option. While it's about $175 more, assuming you bought your current version of Tiger, I bet you can resell it on eBay for about $75. Then for the last $100, you can sell the G3 or just keep it.

used mothers credit card and will be paying her back friday. I do not own a credit card and will never own one, because i will be very much in debt very quickly
