I would have thought the camera in the existing iPhone 4 was sophisticated enough to do facial recognition.
Its not as if the camera is a high percentage of the phone cost, but is a high percentage of why people buy premium phones.

2D recognition probably but not the new rumored 3D sensing likely incorporating infrared sensing as well that will be necessary for this to be secure. If the current camera is good enough then they could enhance the security of the older phones by requiring TouchID and FaceID together to authenticate.

Maybe you will have to press the power button simultaneously to initiate the FaceID. I'm worried because I wear a facemask often at work. I wonder how this will work for people in Asian countries that like to wear these facemasks as well.

People can open your phone with Touch ID while you're sleeping.

I'm guessing that Face ID will be much more sophisticated than that. It will likely be sensitive enough to know when it's being turned at a verified face and then away, back at the person who's using it which will red flag it as being used by someone other than the authorized user. This way, someone can't just point it at the owner to unlock and run off with the phone.
I've imagined that it would require open eyes and movement of some sort that the device becomes familiar with, and if it is under and intelligent learning protocol, it should be bulletproof at some point with extended use. I'm all for progress. Bring it.

Facial recognition..... at last. I'm totally over my finger prints not working to unlock my iPhone 6 for days after a few hours working in our garden.
Abrasive Pumice based volcanic soil which removes enough of my fingerprints to stop the phone unlocking.
Have thumb and several fingers set up plus gloves...

That depends on what you want to be secured from. If it's the law you're worried about then the passcode is the most secure option by far. If it's someone getting into your phone while you're asleep/passed out/whatever, it's still the passcode that's most secure. If it's... if it's anything your passcode is going to be the most secure option.

Don't confuse security with convenience. Touch ID is more convenient, not necessarily more secure.
I doubt people are going to be unlocking this implementation with pictures since it incorporates a 3 dimensional element that can't be gamed by photos. Samsung's implementation did not incorporate 3D afaik.

Blend the picture and voila a 3d face. :D

I really hope TouchID isn't missing completely. There's no way this is better, nor does it look like it can be faster what so ever. Plus, it seems like more of a battery drain having to "run" the camera to check.

The screenshots of the settings app indicate a menu called “FaceID and passcode,” much like the current “TouchID and passcode” present on current iphones. The blatant omission of TouchID from the menu title seems hard to misinterpret, unfortunately.

Hopefully FaceID proves superior. If it does then it’s probably better that no TouchID could be integrated, because it means that the inevitable transition away from it will be much swifter, saving precious room for other technologies or battery. Expect to see fingerprint sensors be faded out over the next two years or so. Soon it will be outdated tech, like the old 30-pin connector.

How do I stop the police getting me to unlock my phone, currently if I use the wrong finger enough times it needs a passcode which I have forgotten, I can't change my face while the police have me in restraint

I don't understand why this comes up so much. I'm a 30-something black male and I've never had the police access my phone without my consent. Is this something that happens to the rest of you on a regular basis or something?

This is how we get reduced security. People will go back to no passcode instead. FaceID is solving a nonexistant problem.

People are going to be unlocking this thing with pictures within 24 hours.

it seem to follow a similar implementation from Windows Hello which is very different from how Samsung does it. if i remember correctly, Windows Hello doesn't work with photo and is able to tell twins apart.

If using Face ID for payment, how do you prevent accidental payment? With touch ID, as long as your thumb isn't on the home button, the payment won't go through.

Given that Apple probably has had at least one person who's not a complete idiot think about payment issues, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that they have thought of this. Likely you will have to perform some action like tap or swipe to confirm the transaction after your face is verified.

But what if he's wearing gorilla gloves and can't enter their id?
.....then how would Touch ID have helped if you are wearing gloves?
in fact, you would be forced to remove part of the costume either way.

also, if the gloves are not allowing you to put a pass code in, how are you going to operate the device at all once it is unlocked?

To all saying they'll be able to unlock your phone while you sleep... Do you sleep with your eyes opened? I'm pretty sure not, and it's beyond obvious you will be required to have tote eyes opened while unlocked the phone.

Seems like cry out for attention. I hear this every year and they buy iPhones still.
Nah, I think this is the only time I've dug my heels in before a product release and just been like NOPE

Omitting TouchID, even if it augments this FaceID thing, is a disaster. They could have put a fingerprint reader on the back or waited until the under glass was ready. I'm not paying for a half-baked product.

Much appears to be lost with the removal of the Home button just for some extra screen real estate; making the iPhone experience much more complicated than it needs to be.

Because looking at your phone to unlock it is complicated and difficult. Mmmm ok.

Real criminals do use touch ID or face ID. I've always though Apple should program to allow a specific finger to force lock-out or erase a phone.

Most of the time I wear an eyepatch. I wonder if it will work with me.
But do you switch eyes, or patches? D&G patches look different than Versace patches. What if you have a formal patch on? Or a if you can't find a barber. Or you have your hat on? Or off?

Is Apple this inept they couldn't keep this firmware under wraps until Tuesday afternoon? or do they want this out to create more hype like more hype its needed? Inquiring minds want to know

Awesome comment!!

I reach into my pocket and unlock my phone before it ever gets to my face. This is a step backward.
I don't see the problem - do you ever look at the phone? in the same motion you take phone out and you look at the screen to start any action the phone will be unlocked - I mean Apple has 1 phone (now 3) every year, if this fails, this will be catastrophic to their stock. Like a lot of folks here, I am a fan of touch id and like the wider screen of the plus models so right now, I am leaning towards an 8+ - unless my carrier is wiling to swap my 6s+ for iPhone X.:p

What happened to the days of “and one more thing...” when there would be something totally unexpected. The rumors are fun and all but I miss the surprise and secrecy of the Steve Jobs Apple.

As someone else said, it just seems like Apple is solving a problem that didn't exist. TouchID is great and even better than facial recognition for many of the reasons discussed in here. Should we all relax and trust Apple? What are we missing here?

So how do you hit the power button 5 times if the police (or a thief) have you in handcuffs or otherwise restrained and point the phone at you to unlock it?

Well... Considering that if you've been arrested by the police, and the police subsequently submit a search warrant application articulating probable cause that the contents of your phone may contain evidence in support of the crime you are accused of to a judge, and the judge signs that warrant, I have no problem with the police pointing your phone at yourself, if necessary, to access the contents of your phone in search of evidence.

If you anticipate you'll find yourself in similar situations to the above while in police custody, and your iPhone 8 might hold evidence of crimes you committed, you may want to consider a previous model phone. Or, not commit those crimes in the first place.

The same could be said about Touch ID of people who have to wear gloves for work or much more commonly, during winter. You can’t please all people, all the time; only most people, most of the time.
