So is someone at Apple going to be fired for this GM leaking? I agree with ATP Tipster. No way this wasn’t intentional. Someone leaked this on purpose. This has to be one of the worst leaks in Apple history, worse than iPhone 4 being left in a bar. Will there even be any surprises on Tuesday?

I reach into my pocket and unlock my phone before it ever gets to my face. This is a step backward.

But what is your point though? You’re still going to look at it. What benefits are there to unlocking in your pocket?

I don't have enough friends who are twins to know if this is a concern but I'm still wondering: fingerprints are formed in the womb and are related to blood flow to the baby so they're truly unique and different, even for twins. But faces are mostly based on genetics, which are identical for twins.
Therefore with Face ID, you need it to be precise enough to distinguish the very nearly identical faces of twins based on tiny differences. If it's as fast and secure as rumours have previously said it would be, then it probably will be able to distinguish between twins.

This is not a burqa friendly phone.
Whether this was intended as a joke or not, it is a valid question. My guess is that since it's based on IR cameras, it should work through cloth. That however would mean it would have issues with glasses, maybe?

But what if he's wearing gorilla gloves and can't enter their id?
If he were smart, he would sell his iPhone X the day before, buy and use the 8 on Halloween, then return the 8 and repurchase the X on Nov. 1. It just works.

Be nice if he tried it with a non-brazilian apple id and see if an apple pay option showed up then....

Apple Pay is still there, I’m always shopping online using it. I think that Face ID will be used for unlocking your phone and iTunes and App Store or any other Apple own payment. Touch ID will still be used for Apple Pay and external payments.

If Apple says one more thing and announce that Touch ID 3 is integrated under the screen... just wow because I wouldn’t know what to say or how to react.

Love the Touch ID NOT the FACE. People can open It while sleeping... well I guess you can still steam my finger while sleeping though. Fxxx still don't like it

Only authenticates with eyes open and focussed on the camera. Problem solved better than touch ID.

Face ID will give Apple a step up on Facial Recognition accuracy in random photos over Amazon / Microsoft / Google. Nice move, Apple

How do I stop the police getting me to unlock my phone, currently if I use the wrong finger enough times it needs a passcode which I have forgotten, I can't change my face while the police have me in restraint
Don't be a criminal and you won't have to worry...

But to seriously answer your question, iOS 11 is supposedly adding a feature where when you click the power button 5 times fast and do some other stuff, it deactivates FaceID. You could also just shut off your phone.

Tap the power button 5 times in a row (with iOS 11) and that will solve the problem of police getting into your phone.

well, definitely not buying an iPhone X now. Looks like either an iPhone 6SSS (also known as the iPhone 8) if the price is right, or just wait a year to see if they can finally get that Touch ID under the screen working right.

I wonder if additional scans wearing your glasses of choice, or hats, or whatever would improve recognition.

I'm in the camp of viewing FaceID as a huge step back relative to TouchID.

I'll echo another post in saying that this feature is attempting to resolve a problem that was never there.

Much appears to be lost with the removal of the Home button just for some extra screen real estate; making the iPhone experience much more complicated than it needs to be.

We'll have to wait and see if this new step in direction is a good one in real world use.

Though for now it doesn't seem very promising.
So I somewhat agree. I think the inclusion of FaceID/facial recognition is a HUGE step forward and, depending on how well it works, has the potential to truly be revolutionary.

That being said, I truly feel like Apple intended to put TouchID under the screen to accompany FaceID, and they just couldn't get it working in time. So the removal of TouchID does feel like a step back. But we haven't seen how well FaceID works yet. If it's faster, requires less input (you don't have to touch the screen to activate it), and is more seamless, than it may very well be a step forward. But we won't know until we use it personally.

This is how we get reduced security. People will go back to no passcode instead. FaceID is solving a nonexistant problem.

People are going to be unlocking this thing with pictures within 24 hours.

I'm a fan if TouchId and not a fan of the whole FaceId thing, but it still boggles me how people can still be so dumb about this whole "picture unlocking" BS. How many times do you have to be explained that this thing works with 3D sensors? You will unlock this either beheading someone either with a 3D mask Mission Impossible style.

No point if you got beaten up by someone and ended up with puffy face. "Sorry, can not unlock the phone due to unrecognizable face." Or if you botox.

FaceID is looking at 3d, plus heat maps and maybe just maybe blood vessels, (some of the infrared sensors can read info just below the skin) so FaceID can be better than TouchID.

Knowing this and reading about touchless fingerprint scanners has me really interested. There is absolutely no reason why the amazing array of sensors could not only read your face but also read your hand and fingerprints.

Not saying they are going that route this time, but actually biometrics under your fingerprints is going to do away with fingerprints anyway. Flat fingerprint scanners can be spoofed, 3 dimensional biometrics including blood vessels under the skin of your entire hand can not be easily spoofed.

This tech could read hands and multiple prints in 3D and include under skin heat and blood vessels which is way more secure and no worries about wet or greasy hands.

I found one of people who was named on a patent for touchless fingerprint sensing biometrics, had worked for Apple right after.

If you are trying to resist this much, should the police want to get into your iPhone then I suggest that boy are you hiding something bad!

I'd be surprised if this works flawlessly. I hope they've tested the crap out of it. No doubt people will come up with ways to trick it and apple is going to look stupid.
