I am getting both models ... not with the intention of keeping both, but to do tests and decide. I live in Los Angeles, and it is very hard to tell how AT&T's 4G LTE will fare (I welcome any comments from those who have experience with this market).

I like that AT&T has 3GB for $30 and I may be able to share data with my AT&T phone plan at some point. But I also like the idea of tethering and if Verizon is much more reliable then that is something to consider.

Verizon for better LTE in my area and where I travel, tethering, and the cheaper plan (if I can get it).

I went with Verizon. Both carriers offer 4G in my area. But, Verizon has better coverage in places were I travel.

ATT just cause it can be used overseas. CDMA is not very popular on the other side of the globe.

Just to verify -- the only way to "test" the two models is to buy a full month's plan for each one, even though you may only use the plan a couple days for testing. Is that right? Or will AT&T and/or Verizon spot you a day or two for test purposes -- I can't imagine they would be that friendly.

A great point you raise. What I'm hoping is that I will read some good user feedback on Friday and perhaps only open/test one. If the result seem on par, then call it a day. I wasn't going to consider testing until it was clear I was unable to cancel the order. So we will see. I may just return one that day to the apple store.

Anyone care to guess which iPad will fare better in Los Angeles?

The breakdown:

- If don't have Verizon or AT&T LTE in your area, go with AT&T for HSPA+ (faster than EVDO)
- If you have Verizon LTE in your area, go for it over AT&T, it is faster and has more coverage (196 markets for Verizon and only 28 for AT&T)
- If you have only have AT&T LTE in your area, then obviously you go with that
- If you have unlimited data grandfathered in from AT&T, you obviously should stick to that

TLDR; Always buy Verizon unless you are certain you don't have their LTE in your area.

So why the hell does the poll say more people are buying AT&T? Are people dumb?

I thought they both worked globally

They do, yet another reason why buying AT&T is not smart (with the exceptions I listed above).

The Verizon model supports HSPA/GSM/EDGE when roaming internationally too. They're equivalent when traveling overseas:

From Apple's website:

• Wi-Fi + 4G for AT&T model: 4G LTE (700, 2100 MHz)3; UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
• Wi-Fi + 4G for Verizon model: 4G LTE (700 MHz)3; CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz); UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

I'm getting kinda antsy now....

I've got both a 64 Gb AT&T and Verizon on the way to me for delivery on Friday. I WANT to keep the AT&T version for HSPDA+ and the promise of a future unified data plan. But the included hotspot in the Verizon iPad is a deal-breaker...

I really hope AT&T announces that hotspots are included BEFORE the 16th, or I have a feeling they'll be losing alot of business (including mine)

I'm in the same boat as you. I have both on the way and the real rub is the 3GB for $30 and faster HSPA+ vs. Verizon's more reliable LTE and hotspot feature. Being on an AT&T 4S, I am really curious how likely this unified plan is.

If I have unlimited iPhone data but NOT unlimited iPad data on my 1st gen AT&T iPad, should that influence my decision in any way?

and if you count the bands VZ actually supports more bands than ATT if you are traveling overseas but then again it matters which country.

I went with Verizon. They have excellent 3G and LTE coverage in my area, and my iPhone is through Verizon. I've been using a 4G LTE Mifi hotspot with my iPad 2, and it's been a fine solution. But looking forward to not having to carry a second device around, and I have a friend who is considering taking over my Mifi contract, but if not I'll just sell it for the cost of the ETF and be done with it.

Actually the At&T one at least supports LTE 2100 which at least some Asian countries such as Japan support. The CDMA bands are pretty worthless overseas as its locked to Verizon.

Verizon will have almost all markets covered in LTE by this time next year. You are buying a 4g iPad not faux G. HSPA+ sucks compared to LTE and AT&T's latency times are ridiculous compared to verizon's. I seem to remember comparisons showing websites load faster on verizon 3g than AT&T HSPA+ on the iPhone 4s despite AT&T's superior speed. This is partly the result of latency and reliability

I'm in the same boat. I have VZW now. I'm in the NY/NJ area where VZW has better build out of LTE but neither is in my area. I don't know if the HSPDA+ is faster than VZW 3G but I tend to feel VZW may build out to my area faster than AT&T.

That said, I'm weighing the difference in price of $30 for 3GB for AT&T or $30 for only 2GB with VZW. Doesn't seem like a good value for VZW but I do like that they include hotspot feature.

not sure

I don't think the AT&T LTE is the same as the 2100 in other countries, which is either WCDMA or HSDA+

I think the value statement for VZN is

1) 1GB for 20$, AT&T doesn't offer a reasonable plan this cheap
2) hotspot include in the pricing (although I imagine that AT&T will match this at some point bye end of summer, maybe early fall)
3) VZN offers true LTE in many more markets at least 2x, more like 3x markets.

AT&T has publicly said how much they hate their customers who tether their connections or use "too much bandwidth". My guess is that they're happy to let those customers go to Verizon and won't offer the hotspot functionality on the iPad anytime in the near future, if at all.

I wouldn't say that they are happy to see those people go, but I do believe they are behind the ball on this and will be for some time.

Glad I went with Verizon (that's where my Mifi and iPhone are). Columbus isn't listed as an LTE market, nor is it listed as a "coming soon" market.

Verizon

For me it was simple.

I live in Boise.

Right now we only have Verizon LTE.

With the "speed" that AT&T does their rollouts, I'm thinking I won't even have to worry about comparing AT&T vs Verizon LTE here until iPad 4 next year.

If you upgrade your iPad each year, it's foolish to not simply buy what will work the best for you NOW (not in the future, now)

It reminds me of a friend I have who seems to vote as though he were in the $250,000+/year income bracket....even though he's not.
:)

AT&T because I travel international, thus have kept my mobiles on AT&T. Supposedly, you can do the iPad data plans postpaid with your mobile account. However, last I had an active iPad data plan was in the Western Mediterranean in 2011. I'm also hoping for a shared data plan.

ATT because I live in one of the intial LTE launch markets and +1 regarding the use of HSDP+ when LTE is not available. My latest tracking info now says me iPad has been picked up from Nashville....whoot! :D It's moving!

Damn Im torn.

My 4S is ATT but doesnt work at my house and sucks at my office. But, they are building a brand new cell tower by my house in 6 months. That will surely be LTE. But I have wifi at home anyways. I guess Verizon could be better at my office and I could hotspot to my phone to stay inconspicuous. Ie. Not browsing the web on a 10" HD screen at my desk.

Ok, Verizon it is. Now to find a way to trade in this WiFi only version.

ETA: anyone use Verizon LTE in Phoenix or Glendale AZ?
