I have noooooooooo idea. I wish someone would tell me. I would ask one of our brilliant customer service reps, but no telling what they would be willing to tell me.

I just did a order scan for my store. Almost all orders flipped to not being backordered. But some still are backordered. That probably means that some specific model is backordered.
Can anyone report if they're order still shows up as backordered and what model you ordered? That will identify the model which is currently backordered.
Backordered status apparently represents the status for the warehouse, not for your individual order.

Once again, I got my hopes up, and once again, they were brutally shot down! Dang it all!!!!!!!!!
I have 2 16Gb Black on order and the phones just flipped to not backordered. From what I have seen, the 16Gb black iPhones are pretty popular.
For my store at 11pm,
7/11, ordered 51, shipped 12 yesterday, 12 today, total 24 shipped.
7/12, ordered 19. Shipped 0
7/13, ordered 13, Shipped 0
7/14, ordered 19, Shipped 0
As of this hour, of the remaining orders, 8 show backordered, 70 are not backordered. Indicating that its probably a specific model that is backordered.
I am also in south jersey. What store did you order from. I ordered from the Toms River store in the Ocean County Mall. Last time i checked none of the phones for my zip have shipped.

i am all the way down in cape may county and i ordered from rio grande. I noticed that some phones ordered on the 11 or 12 were shipped but it was few and far.
I should have just gone to the Apple store in Atlantic City sunday morning. There was only 5 people in line but I decided not to take the drive. Stupid me!
I ordered on the 13th. So its going to be awhile before I see mine. I am going to stop by my local AT&T tomorrow at lunch and see if they are getting this same shipment of 45 iPhones or if it is a farse.

Ordered a 16Gb white Iphone 3g on 7/12 at about 2pm Eastern time. Order was at AT&T store in NC. Received conf email on Sunday night at about 11pm. Order has went from backorder to not on backorder several times. Was on backorder all day and the phone currently shows (11pm) as not being on backorder. Was told 5-7 business days for the DF order. Will see what happens.

I ordered my 8GB 3G iPhone on Friday at 6:47 pm and received it Today at 2:01 pm, I'm in love!!!
For the first time, my status has changed. The iPhone now has a 0 by backordered. Hopefully this is a good sign and it won't keep changing back and forth like others
I wouldn't trust the status because at 1am Tuesday my phone (16 gig white) was backordered, the next morning my phone had arrived at the store at 12pm, this was the free shipping too.
However, the rep at the ATT told me my phone was the only shipment to come in since Friday, the few people that ordered before me still haven't received their orders, but I think they all ordered 16 gig blacks by what I overheard

What we know....
* FRT =Freight
* DF = Direct Fulfillment
* Your Credit Card may show the charge depending on the interface of your bank. But the charge is on a hold. This is the same thing a hotel or car rental company does. They're reserving and verifying the charge is good. If you ordered on 7/11 and checked your balance it would show the deduction off your available credit but the charge will not show until the order has shipped.
* Enter the zip-code of the store you ordered from not your own zip-code.
* Use your Order ID (from your receipt) and edit it in the URL to see other DF orders for your store.
* All phones are shipping next day whether you paid for it or not. If you did you should be able to get a refund/credit for the charge
* The Backorder status is for the warehouse and model you ordered not for your order. It will flip back and forth as the warehouse gets stock and then ships it out to other orders.
* There are multiple warehouses
* AT&T reps at stores and on the phone don't know much, give conflicting information, or out-right lie. They're bored, inundated with iPhone calls, and play with your emotions. Take what they tell you with a grain of salt.
* You can cancel a DF. It's in the stores menu system under View->DF->Cancel. Also when the phone ships if it isn't claimed within so many days it's automatically canceled.
* Apple Store cannot cancel a DF.
* The 16gig Black is the most popular and it's the one I'm waiting for.....!

I wrote a small screen scraper to help me track my iPhone purchase. Its worked pretty well [[when the AT&T servers are up]].
It expects your zip code and the last 4 digits of your order number, similar to running a purchase order query on the AT&T site.
