Activated

Finally activated 7:20pm EDT. Been trying multiple times since 2pm today. Even tried the wait on activation for a couple hours and no go. Thought I would try again, and it just went through. Evidently, Apple/ATT is getting their issues resolved.

I tried about five times and couldn't get through. I then tried to call AT&T on my old phone, but found it had been deactivated (i.e., no service when I usually get five bars). I tried again on the new phone and got through.

Also getting the "wrong sim" message. I call Apple they tell me to call ATT. Call ATT they tell me it's Apples fault. Been back and forth all day. And to the ATT store.

I'm also getting the SIM message now. I called AT&T to switch the upgrade to my number... now it seems I'm screwed. Can anyone help?

What a day. Received phone around 3:15pm and spent the last 2 hours trying to get it going  . It finally activated and things are running smoothly

After waiting 10 hours from "Out for Delivery", mine just arrived a few minutes ago. I guess it was a blessing in disguise that it took so long because this time of day, it activated the very first try! Easy breezy!

I was not sure how to do this as I synched my new phone to iTunes on my Mac and got all my songs, photos, and apps (minus folders) to the new phone but the phone service was not working. iTunes did not give me any prompts on this (although some seem to report that it does in this thread?). So I called ATT on my old iPhone 4 that was still active and got the service operator within 3 minutes. She called me back on another line and asked me to transfer the micro sim card to the new phone. Then I had to punch in a code to get her the IMEI number. A few seconds later she asked me to make a test call and BOOM! it was working!!!

This all transpired at 7pm Eastern US time. Pretty simple, once I made contact with ATT. I do have Premier service but not sure if that matters! :D

My girlfriend is running into this same issue. She's got an old 3GS that's still "active" even though she was able to go through the entire setup with her new 4S. Now her 4S has "Unknown number". We can't swap the SIM because the 3GS does not have a micro-sim. Currently on hold with AT&T.

I don't know what's wrong with my phone. I did the setup and everything and connected to WiFi. Now it says no service on the top. I guess I'm not activated?

I'm not sure if I'm having an actual problem activating or what.

I ordered through ATT's Premiere site. I used the links they sent in the email to activate the SIM. That actually worked quickly. Said it was activated. It said that the SIM card in the phone could take between 15 minutes and 4 hours to work.

Well, my SIM on my old 3GS is no longer working. Getting the "No Service" signal. But, on the 4S, when I turn it on, it goes from "No Service" to "No Sim." The activation screen on the phone also says to "insert a valid Sim without pinlock." I can't tell if this is just a matter of me being impatient or I should be concerned that I'm having a Sim issue with my new phone. This is the first time I'm trying to do this on my own since I preordered, last time I did it at the ATT store.

I'm not sure if I should just leave the phone off for a couple of hours or what. I'm sorry if this is a redundant and/or boneheaded message (I tend to think I'm just being impatient.)

Has anyone successfully activated after getting the wrong SIM error message? I've confirmed that my SIM is right with an AT&T rep many times, yet still getting the SIM error and will not activate.

Very frustrating... going on over 7 and a half hours now.

Mine did right away.
I activated on the phone and it asked me to verify my phone number and to input my billing zip code and ssn. Then I waited for about one minute and the activation was done and I could move on to restore/sync.

Same. My theory? Following the advice of that guy who said to have AT&T change your IMEI and sim was dumb. Why? I imagine Apple also retains that information with your apple ID and perhaps they kept delaying us until they could coordinate changing this information over BOTH with ATT and with your apple id at the same time?

I think the issue is now with my apple ID, or however apple keeps track of my account. Now, I get four bars of signal, but it does not say AT&T and each activation attempt tells me my sim still does not match my account (it does - called at&T to double check).

so im off to the apple store in dc to see if i can catch somebody before the end of the day and before my flight/vacation tomorrow morning!

I guess I should feel lucky because mine was activated and working before i was 10 steps from the counter at the apple store. Hopefully things ease up for everyone now.

I had no problems activating BUT

now I can't get to voicemail. Phone says "call ATT" but when I do and choose the option for technical help for voicemail, it says to call from a different phone (other than the one that isn't letting me get to voicemail.)

Well, right now I don't have another phone. So, have to wait for someone to get home, unless one of you has any ideas about why I can't get to voicemail?

Mind updating the thread or shooting me a PM with your findings after talking to someone in the Apple store? I went down there today and they sent me to the AT&T reps who basically just told me to wait.

Mine (or my wife's, to be more accurate) got activated on the first try. The instructions told us to go on the AT&T website to activate it. It was a quick and easy process. All we had to do was activate it on the site and restart the phone.

The website warned us to wait for at least 15 minutes before restarting the phone, which I totally missed and restarted it right away. The activation still completed right there.

I've had nothing but great experience with AT&T for the last few years. :)

Grrr, I'm still waiting for my phone to arrive >.>

Ouch, Hopefully any minute now for you. I was lucky enough to walk into the store at 330 p.m. CST and get a 32GB White 4s, no line or anything, i was also unlucky enough to have my preorder cancelled just yesterday out of the blue so i guess they balance out.

Whoops - I didn't wait 15 minutes either. Wonder if that's why my voicemail won't connect?

For people getting the wrong SIM error due to upgrade swap. I got off the phone with a senior Apple advisor. She said it's a real simple fix. Take the SIM card out of the person's phone who's number you used to upgrade. Now activate the NEW phone. After activation replace the SIM back into the person's phone who's number you used to upgrade. I haven't been able to verify this as the person I swapped with is currently not at home. I was given the run around today by both Apple and ATT. ATT confirmed that the SIM number in the new 4S was associated with my number on the plan.

Just tried this. Still doesn't work :(

What you described is what I should have done to get a working phone today, but I'm in upgrade swap limbo because I had ATT reassociate the SIMs of the new 4S and an old 4, so that I could hand off the 4 to my girlfriend . I did this before activation, so now that I realize Apple is looking for the exact physical SIM as well as number associated with that SIM, neither SIM works.

If you think about the ramifications of Apple tying individual SIMs/numbers to activation, it means that I would never be able to wipe-restore my phone without finding the original physical SIM that came with the phone, have ATT swap the numbers back, reactivate, then swap numbers again. It also means I could never effectively sell my phone.

I'm hoping once I set it up the first time I can activate it however I want later down the line, but at the moment I have no evidence this is a first-activation thing. Why in the world would Apple muck up the activation process this way?
