Did your AT&T service activate right away on your 4S?

4 hours and finaly got it. Got tired of sitting at the commuter and started trying on the phone again and it activated.

How did you try on your phone after it was synced in iTunes? I restored from backup from my previous phone and the phone is synced it's just not recognizing the number?

What exactly is the activation process? I had no trouble earlier this morning other than an initial timeout after providing my Apple ID. I restored from backup, and the initial wizard after turning on the new phone finished everything. I never got service though, and still don't. So I've used my old iPhone 4 sim and everything works great.

Do I need to activate with the new sim? Is it already activated and I'm just waiting (hence no service with that sim in and service with the old sim)?

This is exactly what happened to me, everything synced and restored from backup fine, but it didn't recognize the phone number in iTunes, just showed blank.

I was using my iPhone 4 and suddenly I got 'No Service'. Great. But then I went to activate the 4s again and it went through likity split. Restoring from backup now :)

So here's a crazy thought...this guy's post makes me think that even if our activations fail, we're in some kind of queue. So maybe if everyone just chills out and quits trying to activate over and over until their old phone loses service, we'll all get up and running faster?

Didn't someone say that when they went into an AT&T store that there was indeed some kind of line/queue (and they couldn't even help you if you weren't already in the system)?

I never got to the point to restore. I just kept telling me to try again for 4 hours

Restoring

I'm in "Restoring from Backup" hell. I got through what I thought was activation after about 8 tries -- I even got my first Verizon bill -- but the "restoring" process is taking forever, and there is no estimate to finish, so I'm not even sure if it's hung up. Plus, my AT&T 3GS phone is still working!

ugh. This is why I only upgrade phones every two years. The process is beyond painful. Should it really take HOURS to switch cell phones?

West coast - got it at 10am. Still trying to activate. I've gotten through to asking for the last 4 digits of my SS# and then it kicks me back to activate over WiFi or cellular data. I only have 1 bar of signal. Drove around and at most I had two bars in locations where I usually have full strength. Anyone find that to be an issue?

That is a ridiculous statement! It makes no matter what plan you are on as many who do NOT have the unlimited plan are having the same problems!

Hey, no need to be mad; just repeating what AT&T told me why my phone would not activate - however I should not have generalized my statement like that.

I did have to do mine over the phone, and it did take about 20 min. ICC# and IMEI # to the rep. He also had a supervisor override the settings to give me 4g ? And unlimited data again. I guess their system calls it 4G unlimited.

Either way it was not easy this time. Even after it got a signal, iTunes said I still had to activate, took about another 5 min to see I was on the network.

Good luck all.

Once I activated WiFi, it drops the cell service to 1 bar..

Pretty much same situation, but I'm trying over my PC

UPS delivered mine around 10 AM EST, and I probably tried activating about 20 times over three hours (working in the time between). I started switching between iTunes and the iPhone, and eventually I just switched to the phone. Got it activated just before 2 PM.

It sucked to wait, but it just required some patience and having something else to distract me (including reading this thread!).

Obviously, I know AT&T should have really been expecting this sort of load, but I also was expecting that they'd have this type of incredible demand on their servers, so I couldn't fault them completely for the issues involved with handling yet another unprecedented rush on their servers within the first 24 hours of the release of a new iPhone.

Long story short, UPS made absolutely fantastic time with the delivery, and from an IT perspective, AT&T could only do so much to prepare for the incredible demand spike that started as soon as the first 4S was in a consumer's hands.

In other news, my dad ordered his phone through AT&T, which sent his out via FedEx -- they still haven't arrived. :p

AT&T server fiasco

I am livid with this situation. Getting the same cannot connect, will get an email deal you all are getting. UPS came bright and early, which they never do, got it and of course could not connect. Took it to the store and they cannot circumvent the process. Apparently once the email you when process is engaged it cannot be undone. NOW I AM WITHOUT ANY PHONE. I don't have a home phone anymore. They are likely to get sued over this one. I'm a retiree of AT&T and this is not good enough. Not by a long shot. The other phone should be activated before the old phone is disconnected. I'd call to complain, but.....

Kept trying and I never got an e-mail telling me my phone was activated.

Ok, mine says I will get emailed when activated, but right under that it says there was a problem contacting the server and to try again later, so which one is right? Do I wait, or was the attempt never made so I have to keep trying?

Keep trying, others that got it to work just kept trying. Thats what I'm doing

so, not really sure if someone asked this already... but has anyone taken their iP4 sim and put it intop the 4s? since they are the same size sim there shouldnt be any problems. I have my 4s waiting for me at home so I'm trying to find out if anyone was able to just swap sims without problems.

Still trying not giving up hope yet. I wish I was home this morning just before 10 am est. when my iPhone arrived...my Original iPhone is still working hope it doesn't get deactivated because I'm waiting for a call about a new job...

Also does anyone know what email address the email will be sent to!?!? Thanks!
