Question: I have a very nice leather bag where my 15" MBP _just_ fits. There's a bit of height unused, but the width can't be one millimetre more. Will a 16" MBP fit?

I'm pretty sure no. Internet sleuthing has depicted slightly wider speaker areas, so it's likely the unit has at least 1/4" extra width over the 15.

The problem is a Macbook Air is pretty underpowered and you can barely do consumer level editing with it.

So the product lineup will be an underpowered Air (particularly when compared to PC counterparts), MBP's with keyboards that don't work, and a great MBP for the 10k people in the US that are professional video/audio people.
Apple will sell far more than 10k 16” MBP. There are plenty more types of pros than audio/video, and lots of them would want a larger, higher resolution screen.

Developers are a huge market for Apple, and the 16” will be very attractive to them—even without its rumored hard escape key.

Why 16in does not replace 15in? That's the biggest curiosity.

What makes you so sure it won't?

Apple don't need two products lines at the somewhat niche 2K+ end of the laptop market.

edit rich/niche - stupid autocorrect.

Genuinely just interested to see how it's positioned at this point. A lot of conflicting opinions and surprisingly, precious few actual rumours to this end. Will it replace or compliment the 15"? What does that mean for the rest of the lineup? The only clue to this I've heard is it's meant to be using the same CPUs as the 2019 15" - but I suppose that doesn't preclude a Xeon as a high-end option?

I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want ...

Tim Cook to leave apple, then someone who really cares about the mac to give us
a mac mini that you can easily update & customise without destroying the warranty
an ipad mini with no bezel like the pro

... that would be worth getting excited over, not 10mm diag and vert extra desktop

Reportedly the 13/15” stay in the lineup. It’s possible they’ll introduce a 14” next year and kill the 13/15 then. I’ve always expected 14/16 with smaller bezels to replace the current 13/15 but who knows.

Lets see a realistic price on the Mac Pro Tower will be like $7000, so if you can get a Macbook Pro with at 16in screen, WIFI 6, faster Intel i7 or i9 thunderbolt 3 and get external EGPU box and other improvements at $3500 that is a good deal, half the price and still cheaper than a iMac Pro and portable. I will be ordering day one for a replacement for my old 2009 Mac Pro tower. :)

Stop repeating the same over and over again because there will be no October event this yet or else the invites would’ve already been sent. This new MacBook Pro could be released in March next year, at best.
The iMac went from 24 inches up to 27 inches back in October 2009, and there was no event. So it is very possible that it comes in the next few weeks.

The October event is like tinker bell. We need to all believe that the October event exists, otherwise it won't. Even if it is from DigiTimes :D Join us in a chant, rmoliv - "October event! October event!"

Who said it wouldn't?

Literally everyone who has weighed in on the issue says it will, and even the casual observer with a shred of Apple familiarity can tell that it will.

Unless there is some unknown change the dramatically changes the price (like Titanium, or some new CPU architecture) then of course it is going to replace the 15.4" MBP.

Interesting certainty on your part....considering the last five October events have had invites sent out 7-8 days prior.

Today is 8 days from the 29th, the rumored date of the event. So an invite today or tomorrow would be 100% in line with the last FIVE TIMES.

1) ‘Guaranteed’ - you have no way guaranteeing this

2) ‘absurd’ - this is subjective.

3 Whole post = speculative

Thanks for your value add.
You're on a rumor forum, and you're surprised that someone's post is subjective and inferring what Apple will do next based on past behavior rather than announced fact?

I really don't think this is the forum for you.

The new mini has socketed RAM thanks to Tim Cook, and in the US and many other countries you can upgrade the memory without affecting the warranty. (Unless you damage the machine trying to upgrade it, in which case that’s on you.)

Flash memory chips and the CPU are soldered to the logic board so I’m not sure what there is to “update and customize”.

And because Tim Cook really cares about the Mac, we’re getting an amazing Mac Pro refresh.

btw I think fewer customers would be excited about an iPad mini Pro starting at $599-699 than a 16” MBP but that’s just a guess on my part. Also, the 16” will be closer to 16.5” so more like 25mm extra diagonal.

Finally scissor keyboard..

Butterfly is very unreliable.

No guarantee the new keyboard will be any better. The reason the Butteryfly was used was to allow a slimmer design. I can't image Apple making a thicker chassis. Ko says the new design will use glass fibers as part of the keyboard mechanism. What happens if these start to fail. This is not the scissor keyboard from 2015 or earlier. It will be yet another Apple design.
