Well realistically $3999 on a Macbook Pro sounds really insane. What makes it worth it though?
The fact there's nothing much else for some of us who are still locked into an Apple pipeline (I won't bore you all with exactly why here) and need a mobile desktop replacement. The costs of changing platforms for myself would still outweigh the Apple tax (and boy do they know it). I've been in the market for a new Apple laptop for a couple of years now and have pretty much resigned myself to getting stuffed for at least £3500+... (But have been hanging on due to keyboard issues and previously limited ram options at that price. This one will probably allow me to pull the trigger.)

On a side note, I wouldn't be surprised if this would just appear as a quiet update as one of it's chief selling points will be an improved keyboard - surely a big fuss over this one would just mean officially admitting the faults in the previous ones?

I wish they’d make a notebook with a 14” screen with the same footprint as the 13”. I feel like that would address a bigger market than a 16” would.

My guess is if the 16" ships at near the same size as the current 15", a 14" in nearly the same size as the current 13" will ship in 6-8 months later.

They’ve already admitted its faults, and have also instituted an extended repair program. But they may not hold an event just to announce what is essentially a small upgrade.

If they are positioning this above the 15" pro (which is already extremely expensive) I shudder to think what the base model price will be on this

Are you kidding me? Who in their right mind would buy this, let alone anyone here on the MacRumors forums has enough cash to buy this?
There are poor people and there are normal people and there people with money that can afford or that invest in their tools
and me..I don’t like people who can’t afford things but come to cry and flame

No guarantee the new keyboard will be any better. The reason the Butteryfly was used was to allow a slimmer design. I can't image Apple making a thicker chassis. Ko says the new design will use glass fibers as part of the keyboard mechanism. What happens if these start to fail. This is not the scissor keyboard from 2015 or earlier. It will be yet another Apple design.
This is an interesting point, from the comparison gif posted in the other thread, the machine will have a larger footprint, but won't be any thicker than the current machine, so space for a significantly different keyboard will be limited to what they can appropriate by spreading other components out more. I suppose you only need an extra .5mm to make a pretty big difference, stating from such a low base, though.

Fair enough, but it did seem to take an awfully long time for the penny to drop... When we took back my daughters MacBook with a failed keyboard a while ago it was as if it was the first one they'd ever seen with such a problem. ;)

The MacBook Pro, like the Mac Pro, is becoming targeted more at businesses than individuals. I suspect most people are having a hard time justifying these prices, especially for casual or student use.

But for certain freelance creative professions a high-end Mac is still a preferred tool, and wealthier individuals will of course continue to buy new MacBook Pros (and new iPhones on an annual basis) as status symbols.

I had a 2011 17" Macbook Pro (it just died last year). It was a workhorse for me and I am really looking forward to this spiritual successor.

The question of price has already been mentioned repeatedly on this thread. IMO the best guess, on page one of this thread, is that $2999 will be the starting price and going up from there based on how you want to configure it.

Apple will sell far more than 10k 16” MBP. There are plenty more types of pros than audio/video, and lots of them would want a larger, higher resolution screen.

Developers are a huge market for Apple, and the 16” will be very attractive to them—even without its rumored hard escape key.
Not to mention the apparel industry. Apparel Designers, Tech Designers, CAD Artists, Print Designers, and Product Developers all use high end MacBook Pros or iMacs. 60% of our industry On an international scale is Apple ecosystem for Adobe Creative Suites.

So this is my deal why I would buy this. I do work for myself and rather than pay the IRS thousands I would rather use tax rules and convert it to something I can use to generate money. That being said, I don't need to spend say 4 grand on a computer and I could use a cheaper Windows machine but I am learning how to edit video and I have enjoyed using both FCPX and Davinci for different reasons so I want to replace my Early 2015 MacBook Pro with a new i7 / i9 based Macbook Pro and still run Windows 10 with VMware Fusion IF I need it .
Of course there is the new $6,000 MacPro with the $6,000 dollar monitor/stand combo. I don't need a new car do I? lol

And I have a horrible feeling as much as I really, really hate the idea of wasting so much money (and it undoubtedly is a waste for my largely office based use case) if I like the keyboard I might just end up with one in lieu of a 15" MacBook Air 😅 Especially if it beats the new surface laptop to market in the UK...

The 15" MacBookPro starts at $2399. This product is clearly meant to replace that product (and has been rumored to do so).

There is nothing about this product that justifies a dramatically increased starting price. The keyboard and return of the escape key are things Apple owes its customers after 3 years of a total joke.

Same casing with slightly larger screen is quality of life upgrade...its not a new tier.

Beyond that, what is there that isn't also iterative?

Even if this includes Face ID (which I hope to god it does), it still doesn't justify major increases.

I see this replacing the 15" MacBook Pro, and the new starting price being $2599, somewhere around that.

I also see myself buying one immediately.

You'll have to explain that. While we've certainly gotten used to this behavior from Apple, there is nothing here that justifies it.

The 15.4" MacBook Pro is $2,399. To increase the starting price to $2,999 is going to take a lot.

...Unless it is Titanium.
They already went titanium and it started at $2,599.

And remember all things being equal the better the Macbook, the longer the Macbook will keep up with Mac OS upgrades. So if a good machine last 6 years or more the long term investment is worth the price if you are on your Mac all the time.

Am I alone in guessing that this will ultimately replace the 15" model? And am I *really* out there in predicting that the 16" will be priced at most $200 over the same-specc'd 15" model in the meantime?
