Invites for what? To announce a Macbook that's one inch bigger? There is no need for an event to release one product.

There are MANY products in the pipeline -- all PRO. Including the new MBP, the iPad Pro, the iTracker and the new AirPods. Possibly also, a new Apple TV.

Look I posted before people start to complain about not having a 17" version. Yay!

I want an 18" version.

This isn't even a real 16".

Bigger is better. Small laptops used to weigh what an 18" Macbook Pro would weigh now.

I’ll believe it when I see it considering todays date....
Ah yes, October fools day, of course... 😁

But in all seriousness, if you mean in terms of sending out invites for an event, I think this is a small enough revision to just go out with a press release. It's no more an update really than the 2018 was over the 2017 (in that case it didn't look different outwardly, but quite a bit changed inside).

I'm guessing the same price as existing MBP. Other than a little thinner bezel, new keyboard, and upgraded processors there isn't much as far as we know. Of course this is Apple and they could use increase the price for the heck of it.

The display is the wild card. I am pretty sure it is going to be different technology from the current displays, because why else would they give us almost, but not quite, exactly the same size display?

Even if they use the same logic board in a more spacious case, it would perform better...but the gain wouldnt be "free".

If it is a different chassis just for this model, and if it is "high end", they wont be selling all that many. Therefore they will be forced to raise the price to recoup their investment in designing the chassis, tooling, etc.

Apples business model has always been about selling a lot of the same thing, because this reduces R&D cost per unit.

Question is, is apple adding a second chassis, or is Apple replacing the old chassis with a new one? The price will change based on which choice they have made.

I don't think it's going to be as ridiculously expensive as some are predicting.

I'm fully prepared to eat those words, though.

Since it ships with Catalina, It's a no-go for me.

Just wait until 10.15.6 is released about 10 months from now, it will be great! Right before 10.16 MacOS Ranch is released... I myself am holding out for 10.17 MacOS Thousand Island.

Question: I have a very nice leather bag where my 15" MBP _just_ fits. There's a bit of height unused, but the width can't be one millimetre more. Will a 16" MBP fit?

What about the other side: What do you get for your money?

Same here, got a 15 inch really nice leather bag waiting for a Macbook to be put into it. If the 16 inch won't fit (I could put it in the main compartment but I'd rather it go in the actual laptop sleeve inside the bag), I'd personally just get the 14 inch (if it comes). They don't make many quality 16 inch leather bags, so options are rather limited.

Why? Genuinely curious as I haven't upgraded yet. We'll all have to go to Catalina or equivalent 64-bit only OS at some point if it's not today...

Exactly.

...Not today. :)

For me it's because I'm currently using Adobe Lightroom 14 which has a 32 bit component and in order to run it on Catalina I'd have to ditch LR14, which still works great, and then subscribe to the newer Adobe LR product, throwing money at them every month. Or perhaps run LR14 in a Mojave VM, which I'm sure won't affect performance at all. 🤣

This is the keyboard description for the current MBPs on Apple.com:

"The MacBook Pro keyboard has a butterfly mechanism — providing four times more key stability than a traditional scissor mechanism, along with greater comfort."

I wonder what the keyboard description will be for this new 16" scissor keyboard?

The Magic Keyboard

Well realistically $3999 on a Macbook Pro sounds really insane. What makes it worth it though?

It sounds insane to you. Maybe others, but not everybody. I paid around $3,500-4,000 for my 15" MBP last year when 32GB was introduced. I'll sell that for $2,000-2,500 (already have a buyer) and buy the 16".

What makes it worth it? Plenty of developers work on products and services that require a lot of power to run virtual machines, large data sets, etc. For many, any decent bump in compute power is a solid gain in efficiency. In short, it's worth it to people who can easily monetize it.

If you're working at CPK and love watching YouTube videos, it's probably not worth it and I would agree with the sentiment it'd be an insane purchase.
