It’s been 4 years - time to buy new cables. They’re surprisingly cheap.

its funny how the whiner's come out in droves for a Mac that is pricey, when you can clearly look for similarly configured and built Dells and HPs which also sport a similar price tag.

Oh wow, it's not even released yet and the MacRumors echo chamber already hates it. No surprises here.

Ps, nobody cares about USB A, semi-valid problem in 2016, less so in 2017, in 2018, any peripherals you're buying by now should be C (or it's your own fault), 2019: USB-C is the standard.

Also, I don't want an HDMI and/or VGA port on my Mac, nor do I want ancient USB-A or Ethernet for the small number of cases I use it. I'll happily buy an adapter to do exactly what I want, when I want, and the thinner, lighter Mac will benefit me every day. See, Apple is listening to some of us. And we're not complaining.

Wow. Don't read the news much, huh? Most (if not all) MBP users want USB A. Dongle hell is still very much a reality. USB C is attempting to be the standard, but most don't like it. At least if they were to redesign the flimsy connector and port it wouldn't be such a close runner up to one of the worst designed keyboards ever. And you're calling others haters? Okay.

well... I still feel nice about being passed to iMac a couple of years ago. These non-sense ridiculous prices are totally insane. At least, it is not that much insane for iMacs. Definitely won't get that MacBook Pro if it comes with prices starting from 3000$ while we're pretty sure it will overheat for being thinness sake, yikes..! If the same happens to iMac then I'd leave Apple systems.
iPhones are getting thicker and heavier and nobody complains, so what's the reason for making thinner MacBooks if that prevents working them properly.

So, “Pros” don’t want a port with 40Gb/s throughput capable of:

- charging laptop
- converting to any legacy port
- daisy-changing
- driving external displays
- supporting audio
- all of the above simultaneously

And instead want a USB-A port capable of ... USB A?

Here’s the thing. If Apple decide what ports to have, somebody will be pissed. USB-A? Why not HDMI? DVI? MiniDisplay? Ethernet? Line In? FireWire?

You’ve got a port that can literally be any other port you need. What’s the issue? A $4 converter?

1 Thunderbolt 3 port can actually be used for all the function youve mention above. Now the Macbook Pro has 4 of them, so I guess the other two can be change to USB-A to support USB-A devices without using dongles. My Dell XPS 13 has 1 Thunderbolt 3 port and I have a 9in1 dongle if I need HDMI or extra USB-A port. But when I don't need them I don't have to use a dongle since I still have 2 USB-A port. For a quick USB-A Flashdrive file transfer no need for me to pull out my dongle.

Now when I am working with my Macbook Air Retina, I always ended up using a dongle.

If it's a desktop device then I don't have a problem with it. Laptops are supposed to be mobile but yet powerful devices. Now, abandoning USB-A too early makes the Macbook Pro a pain in the ass because you need to always pull out your dongle to connect other peripherals when in the field.

USB-C maybe the future but that future is not yet here. There are still a lot of problem USB-C must resolve because it's implementation is somewhat broken. It was supposed to be the Port that will rule them all however it is not ye that port. The one on Macbook's are not actually USB-C but Thunderbolt 3 using USB-C port. My wild guess is that USB-C will become the standard 3 to 5 years from now but until then it should still be supported in a professional mobile computing device.

Macbook Pro is supposed to be professional mobile laptop. How are the professional photographers doing with it? I mean, lots if not all of their peripherals are still USB-A and they also work a lot with SDCARD.

It would have been great if you can plug-in SDCARD because you can almost double your laptops storage. You don't need to upgrade from 512G to 1TB for $200, just buy a super fast 512GB sandisk for less than $100 and you have yourself a 1TB storage :)

I've been saying this for years but all the mac fan boys shoot me down everytime. I really dont understand why I can't just have a touch screen on the mbp. Don't have to change anything else to accommodate it, just make the screen respond to touch.

That would mean Apple and Phil Schiller were wrong and most people here just agree with whatever Apple tells them, only to change course when Apple contradicts itself later and then claims the technology was not ready at the time while these same hypocrites will defend Apple and their position on the particular matter.

TouchBar is greatly limiting what can be done with a TouchScreen, there is no comparison. Why press the play/pause button on the TouchBar when you can just do it directly on the video by TouchScreen. No one is saying all elements of macOS has to be TouchScreen friendly, it would be nice to just have elements as an introduction and then build on it similar to what the TouchBar is trying to do but has failed after many years.

I simply disagree that it is a better user experience. I have a touchscreen WinBoxen and find it a pain to try to do anything beyond click on a button via the screens; and I can do that just as easily with the touchpad or mouse and not get fingerprints all over a screen.

The TB, using BTT, is much more useful for me. It's customized for apps as well as allows me to have a dock when in full screen. I find it to be a natural evolution of function keys, but as I said YMMV.

Just give us the dam ports back!
  • 2 - USB-A
  • 4 - USB-C
  • Rear USB-C ports (L&R) recessed to accept flush MagSafe Plug & cable with charge LED
  • Ethernet & SD Slot
The only port I'd really like to see back is HDMI. It's really a pain to go into meetings/presentations and hope I remembered my dongle. SD and MagSafe would be nice to haves, especially on a "pro" machine. USB-A is on it's way out with easy replacements, and I can use a dongle/dock anyplace I'd want to use Ethernet.

Ok, well I can tell you that the parenthetical isn’t true. Not all MBP users want USB A. I don’t.

For times like these there is AppleCard, that way the cost of hardware can go up and you can pay more though all ends. :p

Only if you don't pay it off immediately or get one of their 0 interest deals. Its advantage is that you get reward points for Apple gift cards, resulting in some savings on accessories. An alternative =is to use a card that extends the warranty one or two years, pay it in full and save on Applecare. Key is to pay it off immediately or as quickly as possible.

These places are terrible to own expensive items. It's definitely not something you want to do unless you have to. Even an iMac at home is a risk.

Society bases emphasis on flaunting ones wealth as a tangible representation of ones success. In actuality it is the less well off that actually buy into this mindset and which has brought them into a situation of poverty. It all beings with ones mindset. It is a sad state of reality unfortunately, will it change I hope so.

I never thought of that but yea, 14" in the current 13" body would be the perfect laptop.

I can't believe it's taken Apple this long to get a reduce bezel laptop.
Not many people making Macbooks pros..... so they choose to milk the user base until they have to add "features".

The MBP rumors are much more exciting than the iPhone rumors this year. I’m eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the 16-inch MBP this fall.

Rather than na SD card I'd go with microSD so you can have nothing extending beyond the edge of the MBP.

Agree 100%...i hope Apple will not come back to the phiysical keys, that half of them i use them maybe once per day, like volume up/down/mute, brightness etc...The only think that i would be ok is the physical escape to be in the exact opposite direction of the touchID

Don't want it then don't use it, no harm done to you. Apple does not make laptops for users such as yourself. There are more USB-A connector devices on the market compared to USB-C which is still a bag of hurt and transitioning is slow and can be expensive. If you don't have any USB-A connector devices, great for you, for most of us that do spending extra on a dongle (one that should be included for free) seems cheap on Apple's part. They even included a Lightening to 3.5mm audio jack dongle.

RE: "and launch in September."

I think that means the 2019 iPhones get Announced & Released in August !

You heard it here first !

Apple needs to transition to the 2nd-Gen XR ASAP !

Problem with your little rant is, many have tons of USB-A peripherals that work just fine, thank you very much. So your comment about "peripherals you're buying by now" blithely suggests "just buy new ones", is that it?

I thought it was correct to be all eco-this-and-that and not mindlessly consume new things and dump the old in the landfill? Geez, ppl need to make up their minds! :D

Do those without USB-A devices not realize their C ports will still work if A is installed?

Though I agree with what you are saying, there are a few that do not follow this sound advice and that is why there are so many credit cards and companies in this business. Most have no choice some do and as it is a lucrative business it is not going anywhere anything soon.

Good job Apple, now do the same for the 15" and give it a smaller footprint. Thank yawww

New display models will be 12", 14" and 16" that fit in the body of the previous 11-12", 13" and 15" models. Seems the iPad Pro may take on the odd number display sizes such as 11" and 13" or maybe even a future 15" model.

Exactly. I have used a MBP as my main compute for years. Seems to be used in the same spot and never moves. Occasionally nice to use other spots but rarely do. iMac’s are probably the best value if don’t truly need to be mobile. Which many of us probably don’t.

Apple does not make laptops for users such as me? Then why do I own so many Apple laptops?

As for the dongle, I went crazy and spent like $5 for three, and keep them scattered around for the rare times I need to use somebody’s thumb drive. I hear apple charged $5 less than they were planning, just so I could spend the extra dough on dongles. Very nice of them.

I would like to see Apple have the courage where someone bring in an HDMI cable and they will provide a USB-C to HDMI cable at a discount. Similar for other connectors such as Lightening, USB-A, etc. Nope why bother even though it will meet your claim of being green and provide an incentive to adopt USB-C on your products with minimal financial burden.

Nah you can just purchase this expensive dongle. :p

Mercedes is all in with usbC also...so there is no need to go back to usbA , floppy disk, optical drive etc
1 port to rule them all UsbC/Tb3
