You never know with Apple, but I sincerely doubt they're going to introduce yet another size of device halfway between iPod Touch and iPad. The iPad is the halfway step between handhelds and laptops, I just don't see them doing a product they wouldn't know whether to call iPod Maxi or iPad Mini, even if there's a demand for it in Greenland.

The halfway point for other manufacturers could be something like the Dell Mini 5 (Android powered). It's definitely for larger pockets and it explains now why the first interesting preview of it was somewhere cold like the Alps and he pulled it from his parka.

I wasn't referring to the A4 chip since that is a known item anyhow, sorry I didn't make that clear.
So driving and processing four times as many display pixels comes for free? I doubt it.
Even if this were so, 960x640 @ 330 PPI? I doubt it.

A larger battery and more efficient internals can allow for similar or even better battery life while at the same time performing more complex tasks.

You've basically said battery life would suck because it would have to render 4x the number of pixels, but that is only a single factor. I just listed two more.

I won't disagree that 330 PPI seems really high, but the battery life argument simply doesn't hold water. A 960x640 resolution on the current iPhone would result in a shorter battery life, yes. A 960x640 resolution on a new iPhone with upgraded internals is a completely different story though. Hopefully the rumored resolution is true just so we can see what the battery life would be like.

Why the hell would you want that? Do you really watch that much video on the go? Personally, I find the touch a waste of cash. When it comes to music, imo the click wheel is still the best interface available. Try using a touch in your pocket, or switching songs in the car. The iPhone on the other hand benefits much more from the touchscreen, as it's more versatile.

I don’t watch any video on it, and I only listen to music on it infrequently when I have to bus into work or when I don’t want to give my neighbor hysterics at 2:00 AM.

I use it primarily as a PDA: a lot of e-mail, notes, calendars, to-dos, and apps, apps, and more apps. It has a screen real-estate that for me is ridiculously small.

That’s why the hell I would want a larger size.

Greenland . Well Minnesota isn’t at least that bad, but I noticed that the person I replied to was in Canada.

Perhaps before calling the "stupid card" you should have done a search for "rectangular pixels".

Pixels very often are not square....

I didn't call anyone stupid, the previous poster called me stupid, saying that "what does the shape of the hardware have to do anything with the screen resolution?" - the answer is clearly a fair amount.

I accept that there are rectangular pixels in the world of TV, but not in the world of computers. Do you honestly think that for the first time (as far as I'm aware) in Apple's product line, they are going to start using displays with rectangular pixels? Seems like quite a seismic shift for a new version of an old product

Well, I live in Sweden so I'm no stranger to 8-month winters. I have not, however, noticed any increase in the size of my pockets due to the long winters, so I'm not sure what that was about. ;)

Almost a Mac Mini in your hand.

This makes a lot of sense. We were just discussing this over lunch, the PowerMac G4 was a "Super Computer" doing a GigaFlop. This was a big deal in its time.

Thousands of PowerMac G4's were hooked together to create super computer arrays on the cheap. Worked great. It was a big deal in its time.

The iPad/iPhone/iPodTouch is rapidly approaching this if not already there. Take thousands of iP's and interconnect them using their Wi-Fi, Blutooth and 30-pin connectors. Write the correct software and it's a super duper computer.

Now face all the displays inward and put somebody inside... Attach head phones...

I hope you are kidding. For the price of an iPhone or iPad you could buy 1-2 PS3s which can actually be used to build a supercomputer due to the Cell processor.

but even putting aside the cost, there is no piece of hardware in the iPhone/iPad line that would make it even remotely usable for something like this.

I really hope the new iphone releases in europe the same time it gets released in US, like when iPhone 3G was introduced. And not have to wait like months for 3GS.

Europe i mean whole europe incl scandinavia.

I am selling my iphone 3gs this week, anyone else who is selling their iphones?

I live in Canada. The pockets on my short sleeve shirt in the summer are a LOT smaller than the pockets on my winter Jacket.

I guess what I meant was that when people say pocketable, I think they assume pants pockets, but a coat breast pocket or hand pockets would handily house a 5 to 7 inch device.

Of course here when it's not coat/jacket weather for 9 months it's hot for 3...then you break out the big pocketed cargo shorts.

We had to wait for the 3GS, really...? (I only have an old 3G). This was probably because when the 3GS arrived, they negotiated deals with additional carriers. Only Telia had the original 3G in Scandinavia, but when the 3GS arrived they were joined by Telenor and a couple of others (3 and Tele2, IIRC).

Since all those deals with carriers are already in place, I doubt we should have to wait very long for the new one.

A "big deal" on the Apple fan sites. Not so much in the world of supercomputing.

Today, the VT resources page (http://www.arc.vt.edu/arc/resources.php) gets a 404 when you click on the Apple "System X" link. Not so good....

Neither of these comments really make sense. The key to building a scalable multi-system supercomputer is high bandwidth low latency networking. Even Gigabit Ethernet with TOEs is too slow to scale for many problems.

Ipads with Bluetooth -

Since Apple said that the iPhone OS 4 will be released this summer... I think the new iPhone will have more RAM.. mostly because of multitasking. I have heard that it has sucked on the devs iPhones. So that's my opinion. And wouldn't it be hilarious that Apple releases a new iPad at WWDC? :D

Will you admit that you don't know this? None of us will until June 7th?

I will. No one knows for sure. But I've read a lot more sensible evidence that points to a 3.4" 720x480 res screen than some made-up, wet-dream-for-apple-fanboys 960x640 screen that cant even be made yet. Name one screen mfr that can turn out an LCD screen at 330pix per inch?? Ridiculous.

Yea, when 3G was released only Telia had it, i live in Denmark btw. And Telenor got 3G in jan 2009. But when 3GS was released Both Telia, Telenor + 3 got it.

But i hate apples long waiting time, they should give european people same amount of importance like they give US people.

So i really hope iphone 4G gets released in whole europe incl scandinavia same time as US release.
