I have to wonder if a 4k display would make this like the first ipad with a retina display... Laggy and slow. I am not saying it will be, I am just curious if this will happen. I know that there is sometimes some stuttering on my Air2, but I know that it is mostly lack of code optimization or something, because the hardware should be more than adequate to drive the display.

A 4k screen would screw up apps. Hardly anyone updates ipad apps as it is. Apple would've gone that direction with the ipad pro if they had any intention.
EXACTLY!. So many iPad apps are not updated and itll be a cold day in hell for other apps to ever get split screen support. Even some of Apple's own apps don't support split screen. 4K would be a disaster. And theres not enough content out there to make a 4K iPad worthwhile at this point.

why does 4 speakers make everyones panites wet? how often are you using sound to the point it matters that much on a ipad or phone for that matter, use headphones! or a bluetooth speaker

holy hell, stop with the more pixels.. totally unnecessary for a 9" tablet. let the battery improvements actually see some results not having to power all of those bad boys. smh....

If this is the next iuPad air (at previous iPad Air prices) I am thinking most folks whobought the pro will be pretty peeved, and rightfully so. What's left for "pro", the stylus and better sound (lol).

I tested a pro and it did have notabley better sound. It's nice for content consumption, I would think, in areas where headphones aren't being used. I wouldn't put it on my list of "must have" though.

For some strange reason, doubtful predictions from Digitimes gives me a sense of comfort.
Well, I'll predict something more obvious; iPad Air 3 with Apple Pencil support and A9X chip, plus live photos announced in spring. Maybe stereo speakers, and a keyboard cover.

Why does the person in Digitimes get paid for this and I don't?

It doesn't make sense to me for Apple to jump to 4GB of RAM so soon given that the vast majority of iOS devices that they continue to support only have 1GB. The latest iPhones and iPad Mini only just got 2GB a few months ago. Until iOS features more desktop like functionality, I don't even see how that much RAM would be a benefit to most users.
Exactly, multitasking on iOS is essentially still dual-tasking at most. More memory doesn't mean you can run more apps. And a single app must be able to run on iPhones as well. The only exception are high priced professional apps, which will only run on the iPad Pro and nowhere else. These pencil apps will need 4GB memory, normal iPad Air/mini apps just need 3D Touch to stay compatible with the iPhone 6s/6s+ apps.

yeah there have been enough times with my iPad that i couldn't turn it up loud enough, so i'd welcome this improvement. you don't always have headphones/BT speaker handy. just leave the pixel count where it stands ffs...

I would guarantee the iPad 3 does not have a 4k screen. Hopefully no one finds this post in October! Haha. With the recent news that the Appstore generates more revenue than Google's but Google generates more downloads I would think Apple would not take a step right now that would hinder app development in any way, and a 4k iOS device would definitely cause a hiccup.

I see a lot of people thinking Pencil support will be added to the Air model. I have some serious doubts about that. Why cannibalize the iPad Pro sales? If they up the specs like this rumor report suggests there is very little to differentiate the two models other than this new drawing device.

Also keep in mind...Pencil was launched in November and is still unavailable at a lot of retail stores. They couldn't keep up with iPad Pro demand, can you imagine adding support to other devices? As of this week, Apple still doesn't even have replacement parts for the pencil in their system to order. I had to drive 60 miles out of town to find a store that had 1 or two in stock just to replace my damaged unit. Ridiculous!

I am a bit torn about which iPad I will upgrade to when its time. I am on the Air2 at the moment, but am thinking on waiting for the Pro2 before making the jump. My thought is that maybe in 2017 my 2012 iMac will start showing its age (hasn't yet), but instead of investing in both an ipad and imac, I may take the plunge and go all in on the ipad pro. hopefully by then these rumors will be real and iOS 11 will have enough features for me to make my life a 100% iOS life.

let the truth be told, Apple always annoys users...

Notice the iPad pro had the 4 speakers and now its coming to the small ipad's... Probably not a blow-away feature, but if Apple can do that to speakers, then move then onto others, why can't they do the same with displays ?

I mean the 13' Mac has Retina display, once never thought possible. Who would want Reina on a *smaller* display,, A 15' makes more sense... But we got it.

I'd probably be happy with 2 speakers, it certainty doesn't need to be 4 like the iPad Pro. Just needs 1 on each end; although I guess it'd be kinda hard to balance it out without the the speaker being in the way of the lightning port.

I think it'll definitely happen, but probably next gen, not this one.

Correct - people barely benefit/notice a large 4K TV set at normal viewing distances. How is a 10 inch tablet gonna fare?

Call me naive, but when Steve Jobs explained, why they call this resolution Retina and that you can't improve on it, because your eyes wouldn't see a difference, I believed him. It was super exciting when everything in Apples lineup got Retina, but now even higher resolution are pointless.

But people like specs..
Specs usually wins over brains when it comes to the large majority of people..
Hence all the spec-driven-marketing out there..

Thanks to the somewhat standardised PPI of most iGadgets we get zero scaling issues, apps use less ram, less cpu, less gpu and drain less battery.. Thats why an iPhone that on paper looks like a 2 year old android phone still run 2x fast at the majority of tasks..

But some how most people seem to be willing to loose all that just so they can get a pointless upgrade in resolution..

Perhaps, but still, that only highlights the strangeness of the iPad Pro. The pro really needs some software feature bumps.

That's falsely assumed. Many people easily notice the difference of 4K on a TV, and not just because the TV's contrast, brightness, vividness, etc. have all of a sudden become much better.

Pencil on iPad Air would really be strange at this point in time.

Why bother with developing, testing are releasing a pro in the first place.

It appears they are trying to create a market where none existed.

They could of just ditched the Pro idea, added all those features to the 9.7 (Pencil Speakers, etc) and immediately boosted sales of new iPad Air devices (4k excluded) and Apple Pencil sales.

It may be that more people want the pencil on the iPad Air 9.7 frame size than are buying the Pro.

Pencil on Air would quickly kill Pro sales.

Yeah I personally think the pro is a joke. But it's certainly powerful, and it certainly has a huge display, and you certainly can't argue with either of those. Not to mock it, but it is literally just a big iPad. I don't think apple could really get away from that, and therefore that's what it is. While not defending apple, per say, if you think about what an iPad is (a tablet), it's getting to the point where it's harder and harder to make it stand out aside from that. Just specs, that'll be most of the differentiation in the aging market.

Woohoo still a blown up iPhone with 4k screen and 4gb ram!!! No seriously, if they include pen support it will be a cool graphics device.

The important question is: WHY? Current software isn't anywhere near enough to push the Air 2 to the limits, ditto for iPad Pro. It seriously needs to catch up to the horsepower already available.

I'm admittedly not expert when it comes to displays and software adaptations. But why would a higher iPad necessarily require an adaptation of existing apps? I personally don't think the iPad will have an actual 4k display, I was more hoping that it would have significantly more than the current 264 DPI. Take iPhones for example. The 6S has 326 DPI and the 6S+ has 401 DPI and yet apps don't need to be specifically adapted to the different resolutions, do they? (Screen real estate is different matter, of course.)

I can't disagree. I personally bought it for drawing and sold my original Air and 17" MBP for it. Drawing on this thing is pretty sweet. Beyond that, I type on it and browse the web. Haven't been able to find much use beyond that. Really think they need to focus on getting some software out that classifies it "pro". Make it able to interface with a desktop (think FCPX). Those kind of things would enhance its uses.

so I just nought the Pro whats the point of the ipad air having these types of specs these should be pro specs

I think there might be another angle to this; getting developers a bigger incentive to produce more Pencil-apps.
Making apps that only run on the PRO is a lot more expensive since your customer base is tied to just 1 model.
Like with with 3D-touch.. 6s/6s+ makes up what? 10-15%? of all iOSGadgets in use today..
Spending dev-time on a 3D-touch app vs spending the same amount of time on an app that works on all iOS-devices makes a big differens in ROI.. The iPad pro is what, 1%? :)
