What happens to those customers that were given HBO for free as ATT customers of the old unlimited data plans ? (Don't know if the newer unlimited data plans still come with Free HBO? ) I remember alot of mention of this at the time as "HBO free for life ".

I remember even if you didn't have Directv Now you still were able to get the HBO alone for free.

Do people still get their HBO for free ?

and for those who got it for free but just added it onto their DirectV now packages, do they still get to keep the free HBO if they drop their directv now package ?

I won't be with DTVN much longer. I'm already getting my Brazilian channel a la carte from Sling TV which is a better deal (50 hrs reliable DVR) and once the Discovery network of channels roll their own monthly option like CBS did then I'll bail. DTVN had everything together that I wanted but it looks like I'll have to splinter stuff off between different sources. I have a feeling that the grandfathered channels like Discovery won't last long anyway.

Yep existing grandfathered accounts are going up by $10 a month... however HBO will stay $5.00, just don't cancel it, because if you re-add it it will be $15.

Nope, HBO will go up to $15 for grandfathered accounts as I understand it. At that point just get HBO Now which has a better, more reliable interface.

I wonder if the cost of delivering service is more than they anticipated, especially with the addition of cloud DVR. Hiking prices this significantly would have the desired effect of shaking off a few customers (reducing their cost) without a net loss to profits.

AT&T is going to be the death of HBO

Why is that? It is a sad fact that DTV is raising their monthly fees. I'm not sure if it's because of deregulation (if that even exists), but it certainly is because of cable cutters. Loss of revenue and the only way to stem that tide is to raise the fees for the rest of us. HBO has its own problems with lots of other options for movies. ATV, NetFlix, Amazon Video and others.

I'm a DTV subscriber, but considering going back to Dish just to get new subscriper 2 year deal.

OK, looks like everyone who's saying the rise doesnt actually effect those with existing plans, at least those that signed up with specific promos, but they arent showing the AT&T discount on your pricing is correct, they really need to clarify thisView attachment 826171 View attachment 826172

The new rates for existing subscribers goes into effect on April 12th. You will be charged next on April 9th, which is before the price hike happens. You will see the $10 jump when you're charged on May 9th.

As I understand it, existing customers with any of the old plans could add and stay with HBO for $5/mo until yesterday. Effective today, it's now $15 to add it.
No that’s not right, there is a FAQ on DTVN website now that explains it. My HBO is free with $25 discount that others here have, $10 no increase on HBO

I am still being charged $40.00 for the Go Big (Grandfathered) and my HBO/and 3rd concurrent stream is free because of my AT&T Wireless account. Strange thing is, next month I will be charged the same (look at the bottom of your bill summary page), so no increase for me, for some reason...which I am not complaining but just seems odd. I will certainly take it!

The price hike goes into effect on April 12th, which is after your next charge on April 10th. You'll see the higher rate when you're charged on May 10th.

Consider the upcoming Apple media announcement. The next couple of years will probably bring up a lot of mixed offerings.

It's reportedly because of the unexpected huge loss of subscribers last year after they did the first $5 price hike. As well as huge subscriber loss with the regular satellite Directv service.

I think they have people fairly capable of determining a good estimate for the cost of running the service but they definitely weren't expecting to see that many people dump the service last year.

Very interesting musing, I would have never thought of this rationale. This makes as much sense as anything else I've read about these price hikes.

Good grief ATT and Direct getting greedy are Y’all friggin serious here?
What have they been smoking or drinking to think they’re at all worth it?

Rant aside cue replies-

Does anyone know if current AT&T cell phone customers will continue to receive a $15/month discount?

The answer is literally in the article
If someone else replies/replied before me then apologies

Service providers solution to cord cutting. 1. Charge just as much (if not more) for a la carte skinny bundles. 2. Try to segregate as much content as possible into separate subscription services. 3. Combine 1 & 2. 4. Profit.

Sooo in other words corporate greed?

Disney+ is rumored to be $6/mo with the entire Disney Movie Library.

If that’s true I’m tempted buuutttt
I’m skeptical and willing to wager that’s a promotional price or will rise once
Disney had its fill of gobbling up more and more properties

I think you're misreading my comment. Everything I see continues to say that subscribers who had HBO at $5/mo prior to today will stay at $5/mo.

You pay more and sometimes get less and/or less interesting shows. Even CBS is charging to watch past episodes with their CBS All Access, SMH.

Solution: read a book. No one "needs" TV/video streaming to live.
I couldn't agree with you more. I guess I will be using the local library more often and maybe going through the dvd section too.

AT&T is doing it wrong. Take Netflix for instance. They'll raise their fees at a couple dollars per price hike round. Charging an extra solid $10 in one sitting will ruin your entire model. It's what happened to the movie theater industry back in the early 2000's when they raised movie tickets $5 overnight.

I think he might be referring the people who had HBO for free with ATT with the unlimited data promo.

HBO was $5 at launch but there was an "HBO for free for life promo" along with the $25 credit that went on for a while for the old unlimited data plan customers.

This is also what I'm trying to figure out too that no one has seemed to answer.

What happens to all the "HBO free for life" customers ? Some of them ONLY had HBO with no directv now package.

Some of them had HBO free with a directvnow package but if they drop the package now with the price hike do they get to keep their HBO alone for free like other customers had it ?

Does ATT Still give out HBO for free with certain plans ?

I think you're right. He was referring to a different HBO discount. But I think the $5/mo discount for those who had that, continues.

That is not what any of the tech sites are reporting! If you get it for $5.00 now the price won't change unless you cancel it and then try to re-add it. Not me saying this, this comes from several tech sites that I've read.

Yeah, that's what seems to be confirmed by multiple posts on here.

I really wonder what happens to the people who had the Free HBO though.

That is so nice of AT&T to allow us existing HBO add-on customers to continue paying $5/month while they charge $15/month for new subscribers who add-on the channel. /sarcasm

I'll stay with DTV Now until April and then dropping them for YouTube TV + Philo. I'll subscribe to HBO Now via the App Store where I get gift cards 15-20% off.
