Another observation from playing around with this on my lunch hour:

Some channels do show ads in live streams, others just display the "xxx will be right back" kind of splash screens. Looks like this will be a channel-by-channel issue.

This happens with certain apps you sign into on Apple TV or other mobile devices. I believe it has to deal with the type of agreement that advertisers have with the network.

Streaming Tennis Channel on my phone and the quality is great. The fact it isn't eating up my data is bonkers. Think I'm going to drop Netflix and Hulu and do the 3 month deal for the ATV. It definitely needs DVR but I'd rather lock in the $35/mo deal and wait for it next year.

Really wanted to take advantage of this deal, but without local programming and regional sports supported in my area (Pittsburgh, PA), it was a deal breaker. Hopefully these will get added in the future so I can break from Comcast!

I thought an above poster said regular local channels are available (NY/NJ)? I think the main issue people will have is local sports.

This **** really needs to get sorted out ASAP. It's off the wall insanity that I can plug rabbit ears in and get these channels, but if I pay a provider money I can't get them. Wish the government would backhand these affiliate station morons who think they can demand tons of money for their channels that anyone can watch free with antenna.

I live in Pittsburgh and I signed up for Comcast internet for 44.99 which comes with local channels. That took care of the local channels issue for me.

So existing satellite subscriber's logons do not work for the app right? Not working for me at least, so I suspect satellite subscribers can't use it. I suspected that, but bummer since the AppleTV app. :-(

Its city by city - some have them some don't. When you sign in, you can see what cities have which local channels. for example New York City has WABC-TV, WNBC and WNYW. Houston only has KTRK-TV. Pittsburgh isn't on the list.

No CSN Philly... I signed up for the apple tv deal so they have 3 months to add it or I'm out.
I too am hoping for some local CSN action, but how good are our chances when the the "C" in CSN stands for Comcrap? (The company many like myself are ditching to try this new service)

This is like a very plain Jain version of Sling or Vue. Still has a ways to go before catching up to those two other services.

But I can't complain as I won't pay anything for the service for 3 months once I sell the Apple TV they send me.

I am just used to the DVR and other stuff Vue provides. So it seems odd to go from Vue which has all the features, to Directv, which is like a work in progress.

That's why there's the original DirecTV app. Why do you need two of them?

No definitely not. This is its' own service, and has no way to decode what full DirecTV package you have to give you access to just those channels. Just like having HBO through cable doesn't give you HBO Now, you have to use the different Go app.

That's not too bad. Not sure how much I want to be playing around with switching between devices, boxes, etc. If it was streamlined I would be tempted, but it sounds fragmented? Is that the case?

Nope. I have no issues. I dont watch the local networks all that much so it doesnt matter with me. But someone who may flip back and forth between say CBS and Spike, it would be a pain in the ass.

The reason you can "watch it for free" is because those affiliates paid a crap ton of money for the rights to transmit that content.

Ah ok. I watch the news every morning so going back and forth would get old. If they add Pittsburgh Local Channels at some point, I'm in.

Can anyone comment as to whether the video on-demand shows show commercials? Or are they commercial free streams? It drives me insane to watch commercials when I use the video on demand features on various Amazon fire apps. Man, I really need to fix my TiVo. I haven't seen a commercial in 16 years.

Can I both do the 1 week trial, and, if I like it, I can sign up for 3 months and get that free Apple TV?

Or is that 3 month sign up to get a free Apple TV only an option if I haven't already done the 1 week free trial?
