While it does suck for those of you that have to do it, you are paying for a software upgrade. I've never heard anyone complain that a new version iWork costs money. No one (rationally) complained that Leopard wasn't free.

It's only $20.

Except for the fact that AppleTv gets a (much needed) software upgrade for free. Ditto for the iPhone. It's not like the iPod touch is cheap, it's the same price as an iPhone at the high end.

If Apple was universal in charging for added features/software upgrades then I guess I could better understand the logic. Yes, it's only $20 - but $20 that I will spend elsewhere.

Just filed a bug report from the link posted above:

"Surely this can't be a feature! You're charging $20 for an updgrade that should have been included in the original release!! And not only that, but you're going to give it away for free to new customers! That's a load of crap. You're software might be running smooth, but your pricing policies are full of showstoppers."

If its free for new users, it should be free to veteran users.

This isn't a very convincing counterpoint to the argument above, given that Leopard isn't free to 'veteran' users.

Whilst I certainly would have liked Apple to give these away free and think they probably should have done, they are by no means obliged to. Really, we're being asked to pay extra for some additional functionality - they're not exactly essential for usage of the product. When (if?) games are eventually released we won't be expecting to get these for free. Not that much of a difference really...

Guys, Stop thinking of your iPod Touch as an all in one product and start thinking of it as a portable system. You are using an OSX based device. Like an earlier post mentioned, this is like iWork. If you want the upgrade, pay for it. If you don't, don't. Apple has a right to charge for software (and include it in updates if they see fit). You didn't see people complaining that they didn't get spaces, the new dock, and Stacks free when Leopard came out!!!! So suck it up and pay if you want it, if you don't, then don't.

I've sent feedback - it just seems really greedy to charge for what you already give new customers for no extra cost. Bad apple

edit: but I still want it & have forked out

Heh, yeah it's a money making scheme! In fact, don't tell anybody but EVERYTHING Apple does is a money making scheme.

See, they're what's called a "Company," operating in an environment called "Capitalism."

I mean, heck. I had to pay for my lunch EVERY DAY THIS WEEK down at the commissary. WTF? I just paid for lunch yesterday! Where mah free sammich?

Either pay for the upgrade or go without, it's your choice. As is whining about it.

Keep up to date in the iPod touch hacks forums and you'll likely see the new "updates" available the same way Mail and stocks, and notes, and a usable iCal have been available for months...

This really feels like an attempt by Apple to piss off those who have jailbroken their IPTs, while at the same time discouraging new buyers against hacking.

I can certainly see everyone's points of view, but I still think it's ludicrous. I'm not sure who said it, but it does seem rather ironic that they waited until after Christmas, after EVERYONE got an IPT, to release this little "update."

No, it makes no sense to penalize me for adopting this product blindly. I expect a bone every once in a while for hopping on a product the day it was released (after the keynote I bought a Touch and new nano).

When I bought my MBP within a certain amount of time, I got Leopard for $10. That was a classy and savvy business move.

Now you've just irritated people and convinced people they should continue to circumvent your software to get it on the cheap.

I'm dissapointed in the powers that be at Apple.

Yeah, but we didn't pay for the upgrade that changed the functionality of the iCal "bug" that meant we couldn't add calendar entries

i just called apple tech support and spoke to bryan about the touch upgrade. he told me that if you do not pay the twenty dollars to upgrade the ipod touch, you will be stuck with firmware version 1.1.2 in perpetuity, so if your ipod goes buggy or something else happens, you will essentially be forced to upgrade or to keep using old firmware. considering the way that the upgrading works in itunes, if you have to reset your ipod, it will come down to using 1.1.1 (reset to factory settings) or paying twenty dollars. this is extortion.

Hmm...not sure about this. From what I can tell version 1.1.3 is a software update whereas the new apps are a software upgrade. Can anyone confirm?

Way to go Apple tech!

The firmware update to 1.1.3 is free - others are doing it right now. The 5 new apps will cost. Obviously with the firmware flashed to 1.1.2, 'factory settings' becomes 1.1.2, not 1.1.1.

I'm speechless at the sheer and utter lameness of Apple's decision to go this way. No doubt it has something to do with the upcoming SDK. :(

I'm not trying to be a fan-boy but, geeze... Apple doesn't have to give everything away for free... You should be happy!

I didn't notice any flashing messages saying "we'll take $20 thanks" when I downloaded it - I wasn't logged in to itunes store so i'm guessing 1.1.3 is different to the apps

this may be a case of the tech support people not knowing what they are talking about. i hope it is.

i can't decide which will cause a bigger uproar- charging people twenty bucks for these apps, or the day when apple eats crow and releases them for free a la the 100 dollar gift card for iphone early adopters?

up until today i had been adamant about not jailbreaking my touch, but i think i shall have to do some research and learn how it is done.

now i dont really care either way, but here are a few points i'd thought i'd make

the thing says its a January only, so does this mean that we'll be unable to update or it'll cost more later?
this could be measure to stop people waiting till the hackers are able to get around the new version to update.

all our iPods are pritty new, so, what would happen if saaaay, my ipod *accidentally* breaks some how and i decide to trade it in on the warranty?

is it even possible to jailbreak the new version. they've mannaged to keep up out of the new iphone software over here in the UK.

one thing is that the iPhone seems to have the latest update for free, which is a little cruel i think

what do you all think?
