It's ONLY $20!!!!! What is wrong with you people. You'll spend that on a couple of mochafrappucinos at Starbucks. All that new software for less than 5% of the original purchase price. Whatta bunch of whiners. If you can afford $400 for an iPod, what's all the griping about $20 that extends its usefulness 10-fold? Geez! Or did your mommy and daddy buy you the iPod?

1) No, I won't spend $20 at Starbucks.
2) Since $20 is no big deal to you, would you mind Paypaling me just $10? In exchange I'll tell you how great and wonder you AND Steve Jobs are.

Real smooth guys.

Forums are for opinions, no? Some people just think it’s a little out. I will probably pay the money for the apps when I actually get my iPod back from repair, but still don't think that we should have to.

I don't want to annoy anybody or fall out over this, lol.

It's Sarbanes-Oxley, people, not Apple.

We decided at work to opt out of their "compliance strategy" because we were doing wierd things to our customers to be compliant as well...

If that's the case, explain the AppleTV and iPhone updates today.

Gawd knows. I only signed up to the site when creating the petition, but I believe when you sign it it also makes an account on the site for you, so that you van sign other petitions etc. Maybe its just there to find out where abouts you are signing from?

Heh, yeah it's a money making scheme! In fact, don't tell anybody but EVERYTHING Apple does is a money making scheme.

See, they're what's called a "Company," operating in an environment called "Capitalism."

I mean, heck. I had to pay for my lunch EVERY DAY THIS WEEK down at the commissary. WTF? I just paid for lunch yesterday! Where mah free sammich?

Either pay for the upgrade or go without, it's your choice. As is whining about it.

DING DING DING DING.

1) this isnt like a tiger to leopard upgrade. its 1.1.2 to 1.1.3. they are like upgrades to leopard and those are free right?

just wanted to set that straight

however, as pissed as i am, its not new in industry. who get upset when say directtv gives promos on new boxes or programming to new customers while existing ones cant get the same deal?

for me i dont need these apps. weather? i can use my computer, and chances are if i dont have my comp, ive been outside and dont need a device to state the obvious. same as mail and other apps. if im in a wifi zone, i have access to a computer. this is why i dont really browse on my touch

i mean its not like the touch has edge to have access to the data at all times. you need to be in a hotspot. and im willing to bet most of us have a computer to access in a hot spot. if not, most of these apps can be used via the interent on the device anyway

You can get 1.1.3 without paying money for the added uses. These are programs, like Microsoft Office, that cost money.

Apple makes products I want. I pay them money in return. If they make a product I don't want, I don't pay the money. I don't run around with a pitchfork and complain...

Way to go Apple tech!

The firmware update to 1.1.3 is free - others are doing it right now. The 5 new apps will cost. Obviously with the firmware flashed to 1.1.2, 'factory settings' becomes 1.1.2, not 1.1.1.

And the update is still free, it's only the apps that cost $20. Just think of it as a price cut of $20 in the iPod Touch line and all new buyers are forced to buy the $20 application suite to get the Touch whether they want it or not. You all managed to save $20 if you don't want the suite. Would you have paid $20 more for the Touch if you could have had these applications when you bought it?

For the record, I would have expected this to be a free upgrade, and was genuinely shocked when the $20 price tag was announced, but it's their software and they are free to charge for it if they want to.

Just wondering...does anybody have a digg account that they could post the link on, just to see if it would actually do anything? :D

Thanks

Well of course Apple can charge for these programs. They could charge $100 for them if they wanted. They could charge for regular update to Leopard if they wanted. But do they? NO
And for the people saying that they are charging for the apps and not the update.
Did the Iphone have the Itunes Music Store on it when it first came out?
No.
Why didn't Iphone owners have to pay for that?

Get real. No one cares about internet petitions. If you want to get the update for free, pirate it.

Can't pirate the update... the only way to get it is to buy it... it's integrated into iTunes.

absolutely unfair. I am hoping they will change their mind and give the updates for free. Hold off till next week people!

Then wait for the inevitable jailbreak.

I wish these updates were free, too. However, I'm quite happy with my jailbroken 1.1.1 Touch with all these apps and more.

I will continue to be happy with it, too, until one of the following happens:
- Apple changes its mind and releases these apps for free
- The iPhone is released in Canada and I end up cross-grading
- I destroy my iPod to the point of needing replacement

In any case Apple is not getting my $20.

(The latter is not out of the question... just last Sunday I dropped it on pavement and scratched up the bezel  Really kicking myself for not buying that case I saw at Wal-Mart for $15)

I'm not happy about the $20 upgrade path, but they could also have released it as a new updated Touch with a new part number, and then all of us with existing units would have NO options but to sell it and buy the new one. Like all those guys who bought the AEBS before Time Capsule was released.

Maybe the difference is that the iTunes Store is free on every other platform, where these apps are not available for free download anywhere else and their cost is already rolled into the iPhone and OS X price.

Those were updates to pre-esisting software on the devices.

Mail, Widgets, Notes, and Maps are not currently on the iPod Touch so there is nothing to update.

my IPT is currently jailbroken but I do have random issues with some apps - I have no problem paying the $20, especially knowing I'll have to pay for apps in teh future when the SDK is released - I'm sure not many of those 3rd party apps will be free - but at least there'll be a level of support.

I have Mail and I can get a weather widget on my macbook for free?
