Would everyone be as outraged if they had reduced the price of the iPod Touch by $20 and made everyone pay for the apps? When new iLife apps or new features in the OS come out, legacy users don't get them for free despite new computer buyers getting the new products.

If the iPod Touch had undergone a hardware update to add new functionality? Would you still complain that buyers of new iPod Touches are getting the added functionality for the same price that you paid in the past?

I allready have the 5 apps on my iPod Touch because I jailbreaked it, and I can tell you they're not worth the 20$. Maybe mail is worth like 5 bucks, but the rest are a bit useless to me. Anyway I can't wait for 1.1.3 to be jailbroken, so I can have customisable gui. But then I allready have that from the Customise aplication, so... it's not even worth the hassle to update my device :D. My advice is to stick to your jailbroken 1.1.2 people. And if you didn't jailbreak it yet, you are missing out on A LOT of features for sure...

Nope

Nope. We wouldn't. Because I see the reason for paying for iLife when a new version comes out. This $20, I cannot see. So no.

*sighs* I should have waited. Not only did they lower the price of the iPod touch, you also get the new apps for free. So the big die hard apple fans who ordered when announched has a loss of almost 50 euro (74 dollars).

That is seriously not fair.

you have to admit, it's a pretty good business strategy... leave usefull features off for no reason, and then offer them months later for $20. nice work steve.

Knowing the keynote was today?

Not the brightest move ever.

agreed, i was hoping there would be an iphone-like pricedrop, or some sort of hardware change like larger storage capacity. nope. just dumb mail, notes and weather... useless.

there is a big difference between a hardware upgrade and this farce. with a hardware upgrade, there is usually a decent value for your money involved. i am fairly certain that there is little to no code in this update that did not come straight over from the iphone. if apple can drop the price of the iphone and release its updates for free, why not release the update for the ipod for free? it is a blatant attempt to screw us out of another twenty bucks after we have already spent three or four hundred dollars, not counting the ten bucks that most ipod touch users probably spent trying out the novelty of being able to buy songs from itunes directly on to the touch while they are out drinking coffee.

iPod Touch Update Fee Petition (5 New Apps)

Yeah, I know people will say 'its only $20/£12' but that’s not the point! Existing iPod Touch owners have to pay this fee, when new customers don't!

Write your comments, tell them what you think and sign the petition below!
(I'm new to online petitions but I believe that when the target is reached, there will be an option to send the email off. The target can be changed, so I'll see how it goes)

My Feedback:

I want to thank Apple Inc. for attempting to wrench $20 out of my pocket after I had already invested 400 of such cash into my iPod Touch. When I paid for this product, I was expecting to receive, as I always have from Apple before, the appropriate software updates - new features or not, that I paid for when I initially purchased the product. I see this is not the case.

First with the Wireless N thing on Macbook Pros, then slashing the price, screwing the early adopters of the iPhone, not this? Will you be charging me for OS 10.5 updates now? If thats the case, Linux is calling my name.

I understand that money makes the world go round, and so is the reason I spent good money ~up front~ to deal with this.

I don't know what Jobs, or whoever is coming up with this Corporate Greed structure, is thinking, but I am ~NOT!~ at all happy with this, and it makes me question if I shall ever purchase a product from you again. When will Apple try to scum me out of a few dollars again? Next month with the next update? Not even MICROSOFT scums the top of their surface like this.

Wasn't 400 dollars enough? The scum caked on the top of the Apple Inc. aluminum finish is starting to smell like a bog.

It's ONLY $20!!!!! What is wrong with you people. You'll spend that on a couple of mochafrappucinos at Starbucks. All that new software for less than 5% of the original purchase price. Whatta bunch of whiners. If you can afford $400 for an iPod, what's all the griping about $20 that extends its usefulness 10-fold? Geez! Or did your mommy and daddy buy you the iPod?

This is not iPod Touch 2007. This is iPod Touch: Current Revision. We are not legacy. The only thing Legacy about us is that we were once Apple faithful.

If the iPod Touch had undergone a hardware update, we'd be sad because we'd be out buying another iPod for 400 bucks if we deemed we needed one. I don't need 32GB yet, so I don't have to update.

However, they are trying to gouge you for a SOFTWARE PATCH. Those people who don't think the computer is some magical box knows the difference between software and hardware.
For one: Software takes up nanometers of space in the world, while hardware does not.
For two: Software usually comes packed in some form of hardware. Without the hardware, the software would not exist.
For three: If the hardware is broken or impoverished due to software, legit companies patch it because you spent good money on the hardware and their reputation shalt not be tarnished. Or, if they don't like to be legit, they can slap money on a patch and watch as people don't buy it and hack it themselves.

Like I said previously, would you enjoy it if Apple started charging you for 10.5 updates? Slaves to the system.

I agree... $20 is almost nothing compared to the price of the iPod touch... plus, I bet we've spent over $20 already on just iPod touch accessories already... stop being whiners and just like it that Apple is giving us more options. It's okay... People will complain no matter what Apple does... if they're not giving it away for free... people will whine.

It's Sarbanes-Oxley, people, not Apple.

We decided at work to opt out of their "compliance strategy" because we were doing wierd things to our customers to be compliant as well...

And Ron Paul voted against that. Ron Paul '08, anyone?

sure makes me happy I have jailbreak....got all those apps for free months ago......

I like some of the 1.3 features though.....waiting for it in my installer app now :):)

And if I buy a new Mac computer over 30 days before the release of a new OS or iLife I don't get those for free, or a discount either, I'm expected to pay for the software upgrades just like everyone else, regardless of if my hardware is current or not.

However, they are trying to gouge you for a SOFTWARE PATCH. Those people who don't think the computer is some magical box knows the difference between software and hardware.

This is not a patch, it's an application suite. By your logic Leopard was just a software patch.

According to others in this thread the 1.1.3 version of the iPod Touch software is still free to download, the applications are an additional download. Contrary to your point most software does not come bundled with hardware. MS Office and most other applications come in their own box and can be bought regardless of whether or not you have the hardware to run it on.

These are applications that add functionality to the iPod Touch that was not previously there just as iLife offers functionality to my PowerBook that was not previously there. I don't expect to get Application updates for free just because I'm running on current hardware why should this be any different?

Like I said previously, would you enjoy it if Apple started charging you for 10.5 updates? Slaves to the system.

But at the same rate I didn't expect them to give 10.5 to everyone who happened to be on the latest hardware revision (excepting the discount for those who purchased within a certain window).
