"A Charlie Brown Christmas," "Charlie Brown Thanksgiving," and "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" are not original content.

The majority of their content is original. They don’t seem to be in a rush to be in this crowded space.

I think many Amazon Prime Video subscribers have it only because they subscribed to Amazon Prime for deliveries. It’s a good ‘free’ benefit but I doubt I would subscribe to it separately if it wasn’t part of the Amazon membership.
It’s alright. Definitely not my favorite service. Mostly because it fills up searches and browsing with a bunch of crap which isn’t a part of Prime. Requiring installing more apps, watching ads or buying videos.

It took how long? But they finally got me. I binge watched 'The Mandalorian', and have a lot of questions. (Like Gina, you ruined your killer gig for what? And how do they not know what the green long eared short grunting thing is? It's after Luke and Leia, right? Post Han too? Did the race that Yoda is a part of not exist? Did the obvious similarities of Grogu and Yoda escape everyone's mind? Why was Grogu's mental power such a surprise and mystery? I found that 'little' error rather jarring. *shrug*) The episodes play like Buck Rogers serial epi's, and I really liked them

Exploring the rest of Disney+ has been interesting. I found TRON, but the sequel is nowhere to be found **. The Pixar library is filled with their early video test productions. So many were 'proof of concept' masterpieces to show how to do reality in animation. Shading, feathers, hair, fur, and all of those features interacting with the world created around them I find fascinating. The special features of 'Monsters, Inc.' blew me away, the complexities of generating realistic looking animated fur. Wow...

And the Disney vault stuff, and all. A National Geographic big on the discovery of Port Royal was engrossing too.

There is a lot there, and they know it. Hitting the highlights, though, could be done in a 'free trial', so I understand why they ended it. Heck, seeing Hamilton again is a treat.

Glad, so far, I subscribed.

** Yeah, I get it that the sequel really sucked hard for orthodox TRON-heads. There is a lot not to like there. The home recognizer jet powered flames and noise is really rather unforgivable. Some of the other things they do in the sequel are cringe worthy too, but it is at least a continuation. It wasn't as bad as the new 'Lost In Space' movie, which IMO should be buried in a deep hole (and seems like it was actually). FLYNN LIVES!!! :D:cool:

Disney+ seems to be trickling out new content at a snail's pace (it's still a few more weeks to the Hawkeye TV series), and I guess that's the most frustrating aspect of the service if you don't really care for their back catalogue. I can't say I have been really blown away by Loki or Falcon and Winter Soldier thus far. They were fun to watch, but seem to be missing a certain something. Followed Walking Dead as well, watched a couple of older Marvel content, but that's pretty much it.

I get that these shows take time to make, and they have a part to play in the greater cinematic universe,

I was particularly engaged with TV+ a while back, with 5 new episodes a week (Ted Lasso, See, Morning Show, Truth be told, Foundation), while Disney+ was serving up only What if. I am not too bothered by the lack of a back catalogue for TV+. There's plenty of content elsewhere to fill my time if need if, even YouTube.

And I think that's really the crux of the argument. Streaming services are not mutually exclusive the way Spotify and Apple Music are. There's room for multiple video services at the table, there's nothing stopping a consumer from subscribing to multiple services, and Apple One makes for a pretty strong value proposition.

I am really building a major dslike for Prime Video. The commercials, the crap, the disinfotainment, the lagging... The endless stream of stuff I wonder how they could even think I'd even be remotely interested in submitting myself to. YUCK... It's worth the price paid for it, but. Hmm...

Let me restate this:

I am building a major dislike for Prime Video. The commercials is one thing, but the shear amount of crap movies and videos, and just junk... Some of those videos I've stopped minutes into them. They are just so insipid, vacuous, derelict of any shred of common sense, or meaningful plot (Yet there ARE some hidden gems in the morass of icons). It's like every stinker movie that has ever been created in the history of time was dumped into a box with a few great movies, and tossed with a sauce of I can't even imagine, and then presented as a 'free' service for people that pay for the level of service that grants them this privilege. And the gems I'm looking for, like old scifi movies, either require paying a 'rental fee', or purchasing some kind of obscure 'subscription' that I can't find in my Amazon account. I LOVE old scifi, and so many, TOO many are behind a paywall on Prime Video. Sounds shocking, doesn't it.

I have found quite a few videos that I have enjoyed, and all of the Star Trek original series is a binge watch favorite, but the majority of the other videos *seem to me* to be dreck fests. It's almost as bad as YouTube. *Almost* I have spent many minutes going through the videos available on Prime Video and not found anything to watch, similar to YouTube. *shrug* I guess Prime Video could be worse...

Yea, I just have it because of Prime shipping. Really, I'd rather they dump the video and put the money to get rid of the item requirement in Prime Pantry. Just making Pantry straight Prime.

Anyways, I mostly use it for old movies. Although Bosch and The Boys are pretty awesome. I watch my other streaming services a lot more though.

I absolutely refuse to watch anything IMDB. Because of the commercials. I won't be a part of a statistic for them which says commercials are okay. I also refuse to install any app which says I can watch <X> movie or tv show for free.

It's pretty easy to add subscribers when your service is being given away for free via Verizon.
All the streaming services include paid bundle customers in their subscriber numbers, even if the added revenue is tiny and the customer has never used the streaming service. I wouldn't be surprised if thousands of Verizon customers are paying twice for Disney+ unwittingly. One wonders if eventually Disney+ subscriber count will exceed Earth's population. I don't think I am paying double for that streamer, but I wonder if I'm paying for HBO twice -- one bundled with AT&T and one sub from DirecTV. Grr... gotta check now... For several years, it's been possible to subscribe to Time magazine's paper edition for as little as a dime per issue, I assume boosting Time's paid subscriber count.

A more than disingenuous comparison but I understand it was made to justify a post about Disney news. I’ve gotten more “original” content worth out of TV+ than Disney, since launch, but, yes LOL, obviously their back catalog is unmatched across all the services. We enjoy them both, no one needs them all, though, which some reason seems to become the argument on all this posts.

Yep the back catalog of Disney is amazing. There is no reason to feel like you need to pick between the two, but I think if you have kids then Disney is pretty easy to justify. I also have watched more original content on ATV+, but I might have watched about the same hours on Disney (or at least Disney was on in the living room and I caught bits and pieces of shows/movies). And if you expand this to my family, it becomes Disney by a landslide.

as an adult I've still seen very little reason to subscribe yet. I got ahold of mandalorian and wandavision and that's all I've been compelled to watch on there.

Honestly I'm not quite sure what Apple set out to compete with. THIS seems way more of a hobby compared to how they used to call the Mac Mini a hobby...
As I said, I don’t Apple set out to compete with any of the mainstream streaming services. They offer 100% original content, so I’m sure they saw their service as complementing other services.

I changed to a 'dislike'. Yeah, some of the stuff I do want to watch, I can't without paying for it, or getting another subscription. SHOW US THE MONEY!!!

So many really bad movies that should never have been made... YUCK...

That would be me. I worked up close and personal with Disney. I don't like their methods.

Truth is, every 'good company' is just any other company with better PR. I worked at Sears back in the 90's, and the family was ecstatic that I worked there. Sears had a lot of BS policies even back them. K-Mart too. Don't miss working for them at all. I understand why they died. Brain dead brain donor management, and really poor hiring standards. Yikes...

Disney+ now has more than 118 million global paid subscribers, Disney announced today in its earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2021 [PDF]. The streaming service has gained 2.1 million subscribers in the last quarter, and 44.4 million subscribers over the course of the last 12 months.

In November 2020, Disney+ had 73.7 million subscribers, so its growth over the last year has been astronomical. Disney+ has exceeded all expectations since it launched in November 2019. When the service first came out, Disney said that it wanted to reach 60 to 90 million subscribers by 2024, a milestone that it hit before the end of 2020.

Disney now expects to have 230 to 260 million subscribers worldwide by 2024, and if Disney reaches that goal, Disney+ will have more subscribers than Netflix does today. As of October 2021, Netflix has 213.5 million subscribers worldwide.

Netflix and Disney+ are two of the most popular streaming services, with subscriber counts that outpace other services like Hulu and Apple TV+. Hulu has 43.8 million subscribers, but Apple has never shared subscriber numbers for Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ and Disney+ launched at the same time, but Disney+ has seen much more rapid growth because of its back catalog of Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars content, along with popular new shows like "The Mandalorian," "WandaVision," "Loki," and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier."

Apple is working hard to bolster its selection of original movies and TV shows, but it will take years for Apple TV+ to have a catalog that can compete with the offerings of other streaming services.

Back in April, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple TV+ is going "very well" and that Apple feels "really good" about where Apple TV+ is at.

That is an amazing number considering they do not have Ted Lasso!

Netflix and Disney really are vastly different services. Both can win. The wife NEVER watches Disney, yet uses Netflix weekly. I am the opposite, re-rewatching The Clone Wars atm ?

This is what Apple should probably do with Apple TV +. If it was just offered as a free benefit for having some Apple subscription or other it would be a hit.
