Disney and a new watch how can the world get any more magical! Why wouldn't you wear your new watch? Isn't that the whole point of owning one? Wear it be happy.

Plus imagine it gets smashed on the first day of ownership while riding The Hulk or Harry Potter - and we spend a goodly amount of time around/in the pool.

Don't think you'd have to worry about that. Seeing as universal is metal detectoring everyone before they ride and forcing guests to put anything metallic in lockers including prescription glasses; it is doubtful you would even be allowed your watch on the Hulk or Dragons.

Greetings from the land of the Mouse. I just wanted to stop by and let you all know that I am the proud owner of three limited edition Magic Bands... Christmas Olaf, Summer Olaf and Flower & Garden Anna & Elsa!

<preen>

I hope you all have a fantastic time on your upcoming Disney trips!

Too bad you can't use it as a magic band.

Hell, Magicbands are one of the reasons I want the watch. I bet that eventually Disney will have an app for the watch that makes it act like a magicband.

*yet....

it's never too late. seriously, go!

Not going to happen. While the tech isn't a mystery per-se, you could kiss your Apple Watch battery goodbye in the short-term given how the MagicBand works. Not to mention all the backend tech.

Actually the RFID antennas at WDW can read any basic NFC device if required.

RFID sure - Long Range RF no.

Hopefully they still have some of the flower and garden Elsa & Anna bands when I get there in May. It's limited to 5000, so I would presume there isn't much left, if any. Oh well.

How is Disney Springs coming along I wonder? Saw some pics of the amphicars.

http://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2015/04/15/review-the-boathouse-at-disney-worlds-disney-springs/

Actually coming together quite nicely. I had an opportunity to have some drinks at the dockside bar at the Boathouse Monday and it was quite a nice spot. Menu is still a bit limited out there, but I am sure it will get better with time. Still a sea of construction walls overall however, it will be another good 6 months or longer before it really starts to come together.

And the Amphicars are awesome as are all of the Chris Craft boats on display.

I am in the same boat as they say... headed to Disney Cruise on the 24th and one day at the end in the park. BUT I got the June date so I have no chance. Have fun.

First time on a Disney cruise? Careful it is life changing.

The Orange County Register says they're working on a new implementation — they might choose a more smartphone-friendly technology.

No metal detectors last trip (we were just there for Christmas/Grinchmas in December, we go about 2-3 times year :) ) but I was aware they were doing some "soft tests" early this year. For major inverted rides (that I'd assume being limited to Hulk, Rockit and Dragons), I understand the safety concern of people getting clocked upside the head by a loose cellphone (which apparently happened, prompting this new initiative).

An ejected iPhone 6+ is like a flying guillotine :D

I'd be shocked though if you were required to remove prescription glasses[?] Seems like a liability issue? A bunch of half blind people stumbling around a ride :D I'd also assume anything strapped to your person like a watch, jewelry, etc., would be fine. Also hoping that even long term, none of the "closed" ride designs impose anything like that, even rides like The Mummy that's coaster based.

When Space Mountain first opened, I think it was much faster than it is today. When I got in, the cast member told me in a serious tone to take off my glasses and put them in my pocket. Of course as we whipped around the first corner, I slipped them back on because I wanted to see the light show. So I spent the remainder of the ride with my glasses in my mouth trying to keep a grip on them and Mom lost her wig.

You don't happen to be doing the Transatlantic in May, do you?

Guh. No, I wish. We're still newb cruisers so we're doing a trial four day run on the Dream in Sept to make sure the crowds and kids don't make us too crazy (we'll be hanging out in the 18+ areas a lot), and that I don't have a motion sickness problem. But I'd love to do a TA, in theory.

I'm curious to see how the watch will behave on my upcoming Disney cruise, where I'll have very limited internet connectivity.

I'm going on a Disney cruise next month, and I was wondering the same thing. Guess I will find out soon enough.

It's kind of sad that I live in Orlando and have for about 15 years, my stepsister works for Disney and gets 3 people in free every day, and I haven't been in years. I've even been to the Harry Potter Studio Tour in England, but I haven't been to Harry Potter at Universal (last time I was there was in 2008).
I also live in Orlando, have been to the Harry Potter Studio tour in Leavesden, England, and have not been to Harry Potter at Universal Orlando!

On Topic - I'm hoping my Apple Watch arrives 4/24-5/8. If someone drags me to one of the theme parks after that date, I'll be wearing it.

Actually yes, short range NFC can be read by long range FRID antennas, though after some more research, I have found WDW does have those antennas.

The MagicBands though have long range chips, that interact with eg parades or lunch at Be Our Guest, where the waiters know where you're seated and bring your meal.

They also use it to survey section/area traffic and detailed research.

They could update the MyDisney+ app to have a Watch app can only do Fastpass+ but I doubt they would. Can't have non-watch guys feeling left out and watch people not having the full features.

Besides, the My Disney Experience app is still slow and buggy.

You're right, my bad. And the App is not buggy for me, and it does have 6/6+ support, you might need to update.

Hahaha, nice. We hit up Disney last year for the little G's 6th birthday (did up a whole princess room experience, pretty fun), she wanted to ride Space Mountain, again, and again, and ...

At least with the larger coasters at Universal, we're already tag-teaming since she's not big enough for those, so we're leaving stuff with the other person - just sounds like we have to leave a few more things (re: the new "nothing in your pockets" policy).

I also live in Orlando, have been to the Harry Potter Studio tour in Leavesden, England, and have not been to Harry Potter at Universal Orlando!

It's pretty super fantastic. Definitely hit up both parks (Studios and Islands), there's excellent HP stuff on both sides - plus - the train/ride that connects them can only be ridden if you have access to both parks, and it's a pretty neat experience.

Yep my mistake, I just re-downloaded and it's in native resolution.

I think it's not the app itself but more server-side loads. It suffered park-wide outages twice when I was visiting. and during lunch hours, where everyones setting up FP+ presumably, it often failed to load. They should make it less web-based.

The CMs were always nervous at the FP+ kiosks :D

Agreed backend system overloaded / very slow 2 weeks ago.

A watch is meant to be worn. Just wear it. If its get damaged just use Your Applecare+. I do see the concern with a non locking band after my try on. So maybe make sure you do have a locking one.

DisneyWorld with or without the watch

We have a trip booked for a week in early May. I have a watch coming in the launch day wave so very much looking forward to wearing it at WDW opposite my magic band!

Heading to WDW on the 14th and a Disney cruise on the 15th. Glad I'm in the 4/28-5/8 camp. Though I wished I had ordered a sport band to go with my classic buckle. Unless they have them in store, I don't think I would be able to get it before leaving.

If you order a blue/green one, it will be here by then. 2-4 weeks.
