Really not surprising to see Samsung fans here attempting to pull in 100% credit.

It is valid that Apple is capitalizing on the experts in OLED for their display for sure. But don’t discount apple’s specification changes, software calibration, and contribution to the design. Apple spec’d LCD displays (Made by other corporations) have been competing well against OLED for years, now that they are putting Eggs into the OLED basket, I am not surprised to see them doing well, simply because they tend to pick the best manufacturers for their needs. (Not always though.

What do they mean by colour shifting?
It means when you look at your X straight, it looks great, but as you tilt it so you are viewing it from an angle, the color "changes" a bit. I'm a little surprised to read this writeup, as my X turns BLUE in about 15-20 degrees of angle.
If you read closely, they say the brightness doesn't suffer. Well, I can tell you the color does for sure. I was so distraught on Friday night that I hated my X because of it. I've since cooled down and decided I like the phone. Blue screen and all.

Err, no. Being well implemented with high standards, great attention to detail and exacting quality control is what makes something great, not the fact that it’s a new idea. Same thing that makes Apple products great.

Come on seriously?

Good implementation, High standards, great attention to detail, amazing quality control. That is al what makes a phones display top performing. Its just easier to say top performance than listing every aspect of what makes top performance.

Now, how do you get all of that stuff...jeez I don't know...could it be from a new idea? A new way of doing things?

Once again, your just proving them right.

way to yellow tint and whites arnt white like my 7 plus also viewing angles are so diff hue its hard to see so this isnt right

It's correct. The off angle stuff occurs with OLED's, so it's normal. The yellow tint, I can't really speak on as I don't see it myself, but it may be from True Tone as it is the default out of the box.

I understand it would be a major problem to do the face id, as well as a full screen without the top notch. Nevertheless, it still feels kind of weird when watching a video. The display by itself is really great.

Why would you use your phone on an angle though? I don't get how colour shift is so relevant.

Apple designed it, not Samsung. The same way Samsung was manufacturing the A9 chips for the 6S/6S Plus: they had nothing to do with the design.

I recognize that. My comment was meant to be a sarcastic jab at the fact that so many on MacRumors claimed that there was no way the Apple display could perform better than the ones Samsung puts on their own phones because Samsung manufacturers it.

It's like saying a McLearn can't perform better than a Mercedes because they get the engine from Mercedes (and also BMW in the past too). They ignore the fact that McLearn takes that engine and modifies it using their own tools and software.

Tilting a bit to reach Control Center for example. But like now it's on my desk, so I'm a good 20-30 degrees off. Yes, I could buy a dock stand.
p.s. that Apple marketing image of the lady with the X laying flat and the beams of FaceID light beaming towards is fraud. FaceID is actually awesome, but it does not see you at that angle.

In your analogy, Samsung is JK Rowling, Apple is Scholastic.

Scholastic publishes and prints the created and original work of JK Rowling, and gives it to the masses.
Apple takes Samsung's created display and pushes it onto the masses through their phone.

If anything, Apple is the "publisher." Do I care? No. I just hate seeing fanboy's like yourself making everything about Apple.

Scholastic published Harry Potter.

Doesn't make them better writers than JK Rowling

Could be better if it wasn't missing a big chunk of the top screen. Looks like a giant cluster of bad pixels.
Perhaps you should find a way to put a front facing camera and speaker on a phone without disrupting the screen. Never ceases to amaze me that people continue to complain about the notch, as if it'd be better to have MORE unused space on the front. The technology doesn't exist to have the entire front be screen, so take it or leave it. I took it, and I'm glad I did.

As a result, for Smartphones it is absolutely pointless to further increase the display resolution and pixels per inch (ppi) up to 4K (3940x2160 pixels) for a silly marketing wild goose chase into the stratosphere, with no visual benefit for humans!

Does this mean that increasing resolution doesn't matter at this point unless it's 4k or are they saying a 4k display for a smartphone is pointless as well?

The more I use it...I actually like the notch. AND I'm also 100% convinced that Apple didn't "settle" for the notch. They absolutely left there as branding. I was in a big group of people over the weekend. Every single phone in the room looked identical from +10 feet. Except mine. Apple totally loves the notch for the distinguishment.

That's a good point as well. Every other screen has the "chin" this year so why not distinguish yourself with the "notch" and actually get a bit more usable screen at the same time.

i have to admit that this test gives me some pleasure, because some users here kept insisting, that samsung didn't give apple the newest tech.

but it's a win for everyone. surely samsung will use some things of what they learned in collaboration with apple for future products.

Maybe try a different site that isn't Apple centric if you don't want to see fanboys making everything about Apple.

I think the problem here is a software problem. The decision to use as much of the screen as possible, was the right one.

Remember, iOS has until now been designed for rectangular screens with 90° corners and no notch. The OS was adapted to work on iPhone X, "adapted" being the important thing to note. They didn't redesign the entire iOS to work on iPhone X. They merely made changes to make it work. Since iPhone X's screen type is the one that we're likely to see going forward on all iPhones, iOS design will begin to be designed specifically for the notch and rounded corners.

The OLED screen and the notch make the iPhone X a perfect candidate for a dark mode OS. Apple already has a precedent for this on Apple Watch. The OS and all apps are made to work on a dark screen with only the UI elements and contents surfacing as objects on an otherwise dark screen.

I'm looking forward to iOS 12 where I think we'll begin to see this new UI direction begin fleshing out.

What? Suddenly DisplayMate's rating matter again once the iPhone X takes the top spot? Amazing.
Displaymate, "iPhone 8 screen is best ever!"
