At least give us an option to change it. Icon Needs to be centered (too much space on the right).

But...it is just my "opinion"...it is annoying..(see image below)

Sorry, but NO.

On Tahoe, Apple finally fixed one of the most disgusting UI changes they ever did: centering the icon and text in alert dialogs in Big Sur.

Finally, in Tahoe they did the right thing (partially) and aligned everything to the left.

The icon cannot be centered while the text in the dialog is aligned to the left.

Ideally, they of course should have just restored the normal, pre-Big Sur design of the alert dialogs:

Fun fact: Nobody, not a single user, ever asked Apple to do the idiotic change they did in Big Sur.

This I can agree with, as the look is good.

But this ??? Come on...

I’m genuinely curious from a designer’s POV. What are the possible purposes for not centring it? Is it meant to be discordant and draw your attention by being annoying? Or is there some kind of other technical benefit for RTL languages?

That's because center-aligned text is not suitable for human consumption. Especially in alert dialogs that can include file paths, error descriptions, and other highly specialized info.

Have you noticed that pretty much everything you read and write—including your own message—is left-aligned?

And since the text is left-aligned, the icon cannot be centered.

See my post above for some additional info.

Agree and good point. :)

I work with other languages now (coming from the West - English) and now working with the Japanese language, so my sense of "what is best" to align is confusing..my sight has changed.

Each design generation and/or school have their own "design laws" and what is considered "correct".

Must be why I still taught Bauhaus in 2024. If you can point out the design generation where legible text didn't matter, I'll consider myself better informed.

Anyway, what I came here to post about: Why is the Photos widget translucent and the photo in the News widget not? Do they actually road test this stuff before putting it out? (This is me giving Tahoe an honest shot by going with default transparency).

EDIT
As the OS developer Apple needs to think about the fact that some apps aren't going to update quickly enough or maybe ever. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Putting aside the third-party app icons, and whatever the hell happened to Chrome, why is the downloads icon (next to the Trash) full color??? At least make it consistent!

like zevrix said above the design is "...half-assed..." LOL. Like my Dad would have said (thanks for the memory). LOL

I am not being prejudiced to young designers...but when I worked as a designer some years ago, these are the things that I would have to correct...

Me thinks Apple has new younger designers working on this stuff now. Not a problem of course as we all have to start at some time, but these errors of inconsistency are patterns of either inexperienced designers or just bad ones.

I think Apple is playing around A.I. generating, so it makes sense.

Oh yeah obviously everything I said applies to LTR languages only. For Hebrew, Arabic, and other RTL languages, the right justification would be correct. As to such languages as Japanese that are often written vertically, then I sure have no idea what should be done.

Japanese computing uses the same justification as English. These days vertical writing is mostly ads and novels.

Thank you so much for this. This was a great post to read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in UI and the evolution of interfaces as devices became more complex and capable.

The mockups are nice, but I really think the new UI works best in motion and when you see it amongst your stuff. Like the customize button on the lockscreen selector reflecting the wallpaper.
I think I must miss a lot of the LG "magic" b/c I turned on reduce motion.

I don't get motion sickness but I use stage manager and if I have to look at the app switch animation 100x a day I may really barf. (The animation is not even smooth.)

It sucks that Apple designers can't differentiate b/t large, screen-wide animation vs small, subtle animation. I swear they get offended if you don't like everything they serve you. NO ANIMATION FOR YOU!

When the Reduce motion option became available I immediately turned it on; and now ironically I just take it as part of the experience and can’t imagine having it switched off.

I did try it recently out of curiosity, and the animations honestly made the OS feel hyperactive. The reduced motion just calms everything down.

How can something like this get through QC and alpha/beta testing? We are discussing "designer choice" here and that Apple can do what it want with its product. But this is complete garbage. They just rushed out a major design change and not even the simple stuff looks right. They just released it, no matter what.
And their claims, that this doesn't use anymore battery as Sequoia is just not true. All those reflections... all these bubble gum animations... the rendering.

I turned Stage Manager on to check, but the animations are smooth as butter on my end. Agreed though they’re pretty intense for something you see all the time. That said I don’t think the animation has changed since the feature was introduced by macOS Ventura. At least not by much.

The bubble gum animations are just very smartphone-centric. All of this crap reeks of iPhone. And of course, that's because all of Apple's design is focused on iPhone and then shoehorned into macOS.

I don't particularly love Apple as a company. There are exactly zero corporations that I have personal affinity toward.

But I do love a lot of things about what Apple had been for a long time. The UNIX underpinnings with great modern hardware support for the desktop, things of that nature. Also I despise Windows in almost every way, so it's nice to have an alternative with good support for both commercial and open-source software.

It's a shame to see what the company has become under Crook.

Hmm... interesting. Reduce Motion has always been a fake control, it never did anything.

The only way to disable animations is to run all kinds of Terminal commands that control different hidden options (or use 3rd-party apps that run the same commands anyway).

I wonder if you mind listing at least three animations that Reduce Motion disables? I'm truly curious to see any evidence that it does something.

Just snagged a Microsoft Surface Laptop (15", Snapdragon X Elite, 12-core, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) at a massive discount thanks to the upcoming X Elite 2. I’ve been deep in the Apple ecosystem for over a decade, but this machine is on another level when it comes to build quality. It features a 120 Hz touchscreen, an upgradable SSD, and a keyboard/trackpad combo that feels right.

Windows 11? Honestly, it looks like a guy in a business suit compared to the Fisher-Price toy made of glass that is macOS Tahoe ;-) I’m genuinely surprised, especially considering I paid significantly less than I would for a MacBook Air.

If Apple continues on its current trajectory and Microsoft keeps pushing forward in the ARM space, we might see real competition in areas like graphic design and video editing. If Apple keeps chasing form over function, it’ll be left to the emoji fanboys.

However, for all the discussion on this forum, there are people out in the real world who are just using their macs and VERY MUCH WORRIED about the NEW GUI, and because they can't change the BASIC CORE FACT, they have to go to the forum to discuss it.
Your argument is meaningless.
really? look at the numbers on this poll (under 500 as of 25 sept). what percentage of real world mac users does that represent? and how do you know who, and how many people, are "MUCH WORRIED about the NEW GUI"?

speculation is, sigh, again, not, by definition... fact.
